How did this magic work?
I heard the kids' inputs were not actually impactful to the game and instead there was someone playing the game nad reacting (often poorly) to the kids' key presses.
The most well known one was Hugo, but there was also Throut & Neck. Any others?
I wonder if Japan had any

It's mean to be Telephone Line AND TV games.
Games you could play by watching live TV and pressing keys on your phone.

From wikipedia's page about Hugo:
>ITE made the custom-built computer system named ITE 3000. It was able to convert any push-button telephone's dual-tone multi-frequency signaling (DTMF) into control commands for the characters in the game, allowing the callers to remotely interact with the action on TV from their homes during the live broadcast
>This complex and difficult to use system was based on two Amiga 3000 computers combined with a new audio control system, MIDI sampler, and other hardware, all of which reportedly cost $75,000
So basically the different tones the keys on a telephone make were bound to certain input signals, that's the whole magic behind it.

Now that I think of it, that would have been way easier and cheaper. Kinda funny that they still went with the technical solution instead, probably just because they can lol.

Basically a game show where you could call in and play videogames on live-tv with your phone.
It seems pretty unimpressive nowadays, but back then it was really fucking cool for us kids:

So like that Adventure Call sketch from Limmy's Show? I always thought he made up that concept. Sounds really fun.

By holy doctrine of Sakurai law, would Hugo be allowed in Smash bros? He was specifically designed for a game, but one that eschewed the typical arcade/console origins, though i suppose could be said he originated on the Amiga.

If Crash gets in Smash before Hugo I will personally kill Masahiro

I rang one once and for some reason started crying like a little pussy, the girl on the other end asked if I wanted to speak the Cheesy (the 3D mouse character you moved around) and I said no and that was it, I still cringe even though I was probably like 4 because I’m still that little faggot at 36
