I just finishd Kingdom Hearts 1 Final Mix and I did absolutely everything, all the dalmatians, all the extra bosses, and I played extensively with the gummi ship construction and made a badass ship with 8bit mario's face. I feel like I should play Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories before I start playing KH2.Is this a bad idea? What am I in for?
>>12714529You could play re:Chain instead, if you want, it's the PS2 remake of CoM. Do you care about the story? If so, then yes, you definitely should play it before KH2, since even though you'd be inclined to assume that a non-numbered entry with a card-based combat system that was originally released for the GBA wouldn't be canon, it is, and there are things in KH2 that you won't immediately understand if you skip it.
story is mandatory (everything kh related is canon besides vcast and manga)gba and re: versions differ but i forgot.its not for everyone. id say try it and if the gameplay doesnt click just watch the cutscenes
sounds like a first playthrough of the series, and by the sounds of that completionism and intent to continue i assume youre enjoying it.in your position theres a strong urge to move on to the next major game, but even the lesser games are important story wise and fun even if limited gameplay wise.you only get to playthrough a major series like this once. the urge to get to kh2 that you see everyone praise is there but take your time and enjoy the journey one step at a time.play CoM, give it an earnest try..if you cant deal with the gameplay then you can watch cutscenes
>>12714529Pretty kino game for GBA standards
The cool thing about COM is that there's two completely different versions to try. If you don't like the GBA version you can try the PS2 version instead. They both have their gameplay strengths.
>>12714529Late game bosses in the GBA version are absolute chicanery, just a warning. The 3D version is easier to cheese with degenerate strategies.
>Play a card game on a different console developed by a different hardware manufacturer if you want to understand the story between our original PlayStation 2 game and the sequelWhat the FUCK was Square Enix smoking?
>>12714868I remember the game getting really easy after you figure out the optimal strategy. I got really filtered at the Ice Guy boss you fight near the mansion at first, but after figuring out how to actually play the game to beat him I breezed through the rest of the game.
>>12714909At the time they probably figured it was fine, the GBA was popular and cheap enough that many PS2 owners would have one as well, and while it is important in terms of story, you don't absolutely need to have played it to get most of what's going on in KH2 (I know I didn't). The GBA original was also different enough by virtue of the fact that it's a sprite-based 2D title, so it would be considerably cheaper to produce than what the eventual PS2 version would. All the spreading across multiple handhelds and shit after, though? Yeah, that was full fucking retard.
>>12714934Square Enix probably had some internal strategy to spread out their games to everything possible and Kingdom Hearts had to eat shit. Like originally the FF4 sequel was mobile phone only like back in 2007, which is nuts.
I played CoM right after 1 and i don't even remember any important details from it that explained anything important in 2.
>>12715000Well you do understand early on why "Riku" is doing what he is doing. Where as in KH2 it explains it later.
>>12714529Play Re:COM it has additional cut scenes and goes more indepth. It's a divisive game for sure, you either hate it or love it. I love it because it was the first of it's kind with me, hack and slash with TCG elements was fucking cool. Then you learn you can sleight cards. I used to spend hours building decks when I was a teen that just shuts down bosses. Marluxia has such a badass weapon.
>>12714529Either version is fine. The script is much better in the GBA version though
>>12715007I don't need to know that straight away. In fact, it's better that I learn it later on.
OP here. I intend to play the PS2 release Re:COM as well. I know people have opinions on what the best order to play a certain series, but I've always thought that you should always play any game series in the order they were released in the real world. Like just pretend that you were alive the entire time and that you consumed every piece of media as it was coming out in real time. I intend to play COM and then KH2 and then Re:COM.
>>12715930Sorry, this is /vr/, we don't do sensible and rational approaches to video games here.
>>12714934For me it wasn't that I lacked a GBA, it was that I didn't know it was a canonical KH game. It's been over 20 years ago, but I'm pretty sure at the time I figured it was either a handheld retelling of the first game, or a gimmick spinoff using KH characters, like Kirby's Pinball.
It was very stupid to make a direct sequel full of important canon story events and then have the bulk of the gameplay retread Sora's memories from the PS2 original. People rightfully looked at screenshots, saw all the same worlds, enemies and characters from KH1 and assumed it was a kind of remix or spin-off.
>>12714529>I feel like I should play Kingdom Hearts Chain of MemoriesI remember grinding for hours for some stupid card required to open a door, never getting it to drop, then quitting
>>12714529boring game, it's basically kh1 again with a new story that ties it to kh2. A kh1 stripped of all its charm.ps2 version is even more boring than the gameboy version, but at least the gameboy version has a different perspective due to its limitations, and the sprites are beautiful. ps2 version feels empty and soulless because the locations are just reused assets from kh1 in dungeon form, boxes devoid of character. it's trying to adapt something that was designed with a gameboy in mind.

>>12715962I think it was originally supposed to be a downsized version of KH1 for the GBA (hence why all of the worlds are recycled), but then Nomura had the idea to make it an interquel between 1 and 2 instead.
There's a thread up about KH1 and it's trying to inorganically talk shit about it. Who the fuck even does this shit? Like somebody makes a popular thread about [insert game here] and then somebody just HAS TO make a thread talking shit about it. What a pathetic loser.
