Because xp lasted so long, depends on the era you want. If you want a lot of windows 9x cross compatibility get something pre-CUDA like the gtx 6000 or 5000 series. If you want post-CUDA you might as well get a maxwell card, gtx 950 or 960 for official driver support, 970/980/980ti/titan maxwell is possible with modded drivers.

Get GT 710.
I don't think you are going to need more.

the werid thing about the 7950GT is that it works it displays an image but when you go to play a game it just crashes. i have the drivers too.

Try reflashing the firmware. Make sure you find the firmware for the exact model you have. I'm not sure if you can find them anymore but vogons or tomshardware forums might have them.

Pretty common problem for old cards is for the firmware to get corrupted after disuse.

Otherwise, I think anything between gtx 6000 and gtx 700 series should cover most of the games you play as well as the 7000 does.

PSU might be going to shit. Similar thing happened to me with a Radeon 9800 Pro in a P4 build. While it would boot into XP without any problems the moment I started anything 3D it would black screen and lock up the computer. Swapped out the PSU and that problem went away.

Get something from like 2010 and it will be more than enough for P4

FPBP honestly, especially about the modded drivers. I remember using them for my 970 on XP.
Also had >4gb RAM patch but that made my system unstable to I stopped using it.

I got a hp 8730w recently. In my opinion, a notebook is the best way if you are looking for an og era setup.
Tested several games. The Quadro FX 2700M performed very well.
Otherwise, just grab a GeForce 8800 or 9600

i had this happen recently with a 9600se, when i managed to get it to post without black screening, it went from artifacts before i installed driver, then no artifacts, but as soon as driver installed, blackscreen then system rebooted, i tried other mb/psu and no change, managed to get the drivers installed without it black screening, but as soon as the card did anything 3d it would lock up, left it a week and its now working and did manage to benchmark it, may have flashed the bios before this, or could have been after, i forget, im still not 100% sure its a fully working card, as it was crushed inside the box around the heatsink/GPU, so could be broken solder joints.

I have an old XP machine and I want to make it a 98se with a new drive.
I've checked that the parts should have drivers for it already.

Any advice on how to make sure I have all the drivers downloaded and ready to go on the boot disc?
I can get all the hardware IDs from the Device Manager and just google them, but idk if I trust Google that much these days...
