What are your favorite retro world map?
I have a soft spot for PS1 styled world maps.
I liked this one more after I got the Rhea Birds and could actually explore.
Final Fantasy VII is another one. It's just so cathartic to leave Midgard and actually see some color and adventure.

What are your favorites?

I like the trains moving through the map in FF8

yup, ps1 3d overworlds are the best. ff8 and xenogears are my favorites.

The "naturalistic" approach is cool, but personally I'm very fond of the charm and detail of the Breath of Fire III maps: there's still an exploration component and (optional) random treasure/battle spots and you can also get descriptions of the locations and do all the classic BoF stuff like visiting fishing spots or setting up camp to talk to your party members. It all feels very adventurey.

Overall it's the one feature that got a clear downgrade in the fourth game, where the map came across as excessively simplistic and drab.

For me it's the original version of Lunar Eternal Blue. This is just one section of it as it's pretty huge which leads to just traversing the over world at points feeling like a real part of the adventure. I also like how detailed everything is with each town looking distinct.

The only bad thing about Lunar 2's map was exploring didn't really let you find any secret treasures, dungeons, or bosses. I'd go crazy trying to get the Dragonship to fit some path in the mountains or whatever and end up in a useless dead end.

Wild Arms, it was a bit ugly but finding stuff was great
