I've been looking at ways to run backups from my old consoles recently, I've gotten a good idea on what to do with most of them but the original Playstation is confusing me a bit. The two main options I keep seeing are Xstation and PSIO, PSIO looks better but everywhere I go I see people saying it sucks, but it just looks like it's because the creator is a schizo. Anyone got any experience on which is better? Also will NTSC games run properly on a PAL console? I had a Saturn years ago that the owner before me did a weird mod job on that claimed it was region free, but PAL games were all zoomed in and cut off on the edges.

I use an Action Replay. It's slightly tedious, but works on every PS1 system with a parallel port.

Do not buy PSIO unless you want to waste $200

While American Saturn owners were getting to experience resident evil for the 1st time the creator of the gameboy was being assainated by the yakuza.

I have both, definitely go with the xStation over the PSIO. The only reason I have both is because for the longest time, the PSIO was the only PS1 ODE available.
Even if you ignore the creator, the PSIO is the inferior product and has more compatibility issues. While both ODEs work by just drag and dropping bin/cues onto an SD card, quite a few games need to be patched and fucked with in order to work with the PSIO, and some don't even fully work. I'm positive I've never had to modify anything when using the xStation.
Both the xStation and PSIO will only work with certain PS1 models, and both require soldering. the xStation is compatible with more systems though, as the PSIO works only with PS1s with the interface port.
The only real benefits of the PSIO is that is has a kind of neat home menu, and it allows for the disc drive to remain in tact.
There is the ArcStation ODE which is taking pre-orders, which is supposed to be solderless, but as with any new product, who knows how good that'll be.
As for how well NTSC games run on a PAL console, I have no idea. I'm in a PAL territory with 240v, and I just bought a NTSC PS1 and put in an external PSU kit. The one I used is no longer in production, but here is a link to a very similar one:

I'll be honest, buying all this shit, and getting it installed if you can't do it yourself is costly, even more so if you have to import a NTSC PS1, but if you're going to do it, do it right.

I have PSIO, its ok but probably better options now, there were games that didn't work, just had to deal with it. There are new options too, one that plugs into the ribbon cable and one using a pico pi.

The Saturn does the HZ by jumper settings, PAL optimized games will be like that in 60 hz but in PAL mode your running at 50 hz so that guy probably chose the better option unless you want a swtich. A couple of the most popular games were optimized for resolution, don't know about speed but its probably not many games.

Xstation is really good. Highly recommend it.

Thanks everyone. Think I'm definitely going to look into Xstation. I have a buddy in Japan coming home soon so I might see if he can source a PS1 somewhere and bring it back if he has space.
