What's this, like the third N64 FPGA? Surely seems like you guys are gullible. A used N64 isn't even expensive at all. >BUT I WANT CLEARER GRAPHICS ON MY 4K HDTV!!!It's gonna look like crap anyway. But I bet you can get a CRT additionally and it will still be cheaper than that thing.

I don't need to replace my N64 and scaler, but I heard some people talking about how it is based on the MiSTer N64 core and how other cores could theoretically be ported over to the M64 as a result. Could this potentially be a better consolized MiSTer than the SuperStation One someday?

The MiSTer is a generic device that the cores are being made for, as a result it's not specialized in any one thing so it can have all sorts of ways something can be implemented, such as using SNAC to use just about any console's native controllers or just doing it over USB or Bluetooth instead. The M64 is specialized to play N64 games, while other cores should definitely be possible to port, how many can reasonably work on it's hardware an how many other accessories it can support is not a 1:1 with the MiSTer. No single core uses every single component of the DE-10/MiSTer, but many use different components for different use cases. The M64 might not have an equivalent to something on the MiSTer that a core might need, and whether that can be worked around can heavily depend.

There are different "sensitivity" settings you can use, I've been switching between them and depending on different games I use different ones. They've said they're thinking about bringing out additional game-specific settings that you can apply. There are different spring strengths that have only been given out to testers, aren't available for purchase (yet), along with hopefully a thinner stick.
>>12722923Overclocking runs great, but I've only tried a handful of games. Pilotwings is genuinely a joy to play now.
>>12718754as a pltr shareholder I will buy one not even because I am interested in the technology.
>>12723776I just hope buy these fpga consoles up to encourage games being made for them. Clearly people want the consoles, so here’s to hoping devs are noticing and will start producing games for them. Retro is the way to go, since Sony and Xbox are going all digital and they can’t even keep their platforms from going down lmao. Modern gaming is in such a terrible state, at least on console while retro gamers have never been eating better between the A3D, M64, the handhelds dedicated to the gameboy era, the AES+ being cross compatible w the old stuff and them rereleasing old titles, emulation is getting better and better and so many options to play roms.
>>12724134The guy that made Junk Runner is making a new game
>>12724139Haven’t even heard of that. I’ll look it up
>>12724139Oh that’s the same guy who was working on Portal 64. Damn I wish he was able to finish that, so fucking impressive. Junk Runner looks technically impressive but just watching it, kind of boring to play. Idk I would try it tho for sure just for the sheer technical prowess of having a massive streaming open world game on the 64. Interested to see what he comes up w next for sure.
>>12724197Looks like some sort of adventure game
>>12724139fuck yeah, hope Modretro is funding and distributing it
>>12718676i hated the button feel and traded mine away
>>12724574>i hated the button feelreally? That's half the reason why I love it
>>12722687Haven't had much time to test it but I just did a side-by-side Mario 64 comparison swapping between an OEM controller, the M64 pro controller, and an OEM controller modded with the 8BitDo wireless board and hall effect stick. OEM stick still feels far and away the best but the M64 stick gets a lot closer than the 8BitDo one. I wish they'd found a way to replicate the skinny N64 stick since it still feels like that one has the finest range of inputs. It's still not quite as easy to tiptoe in Mario with the M64 stick but it at least feels like it has a greater range of inputs than the 8BitDo stick which feels much more rigid in comparison.
>>12724634The stick assembly is designed to be swappable and they plan to release different "stiffness level" parts after release, I can imagine they will probably sell different stick types later as well or someone will use the available files to make their own on Etsy or something.
>>12724634I got a green one just because, but that light on the smoke one I’m guessing it is, looks obnoxiously bright. I hope it’s duller on the green one. I play in the dark and that just looks annoying. Glad the stick seems to be almost as good as oem tho
>>12724219Interesting. The guy knows what he’s doing for sure. The music and atmosphere seem pretty decent in junk runner but he seems to be a technical guy. The creative part… maybe he needs a partner for that but we’ll see. Team sizes were to big for the n64 and especially now w all the knowledge on how to work the system to get the best results I’d imagine you wouldn’t need more than 2-3 people but again, junk runner seems devoid of actual fun just from watching it, more like a “wow I can’t believe this is possible” type game. Did you play it enough to form an opinion on it? I guess we’ll see if he’s got the goods for more than just tech w the adventure game.
>>12724712Weren’t*
>>12724134There should be enhancements for the games if they run on the fpga hardware. Higher res textures or something.
>>12724712Team sizes weren't that big, Goldeneye was made with 5 people. And the code and tools people have access to today are much more robust, not to mention the prevalence of artistic skills.

>>12717852why do we need this if original n64's overwhelmingly still work

>>12724735Makes sense. It’s still an absolute marvel of a technical accomplishment for the 64.
>>12724734I actually bought one partially because my N64 has started crashing randomly. I used a test ROM to see if it could identify any hardware failures but it came up clean so maybe my expansion pak is dying. I have a suspicion that certain people just buy all this stuff and have like almost every single product related.
I just got an N64 for "free"(traded for a dreamcast and a few games) last week and it's peak. ModRetro 64 is literally the worst of both worlds when it comes to retro gaming; void of the soul of original hardware and still more expensive then emulation.

https://youtu.be/9gOJUEcKYRk?is=VIdHgBUatbQL9HK8I really wish someone put this amount of thought and effort into a regular mister console. I know the M64 is open source and *could* get all the cores mister has but I don't think that's gonna happen. As far as I know the M64 doesn't support SNAC at all, that makes it DOA for me. Have a Mod Retro Controller on its way to me, I love how much thought they put into that as well. I really really really hope they do a Dual Shock shaped one as well with the same level of detail and repairability in mind.

Kinda of off topic but what's the best way to get RGB out of a N64?
>>12729835>>12729883how come no third party controller did something like this? lets you reach those pesky a & b buttons much easier in the dpad + analog grip. No downsides. Would make Goldeneye and Perfect Dark much better games.

>>12730158how
>>12730161I dunno bro, that just looks awful. I don't understand the issue with the regular default controls in GoldenEye
>>12730165In perfect dark, control scheme 1.2 is almost a modern control scheme. You walk and strafe with the d-pad and aim with the analog. Try reaching the A and B button. Duplicate A and B buttons would make the 1.2 control scheme more usable.
>>12730123Depends on your model, earlier N46's had traces that carried the separate RGB signals into a chip that processes it into composite, you can just tap into those traces with an amplifier chip that amplifies those signals enough to be picked up by a CRT and connects them to the unused RGB pins of the video port, then you can just use the same RGB cable you would use for a SNES.If you have a later model you need a far more complicated mod to get an RGB signal out of it that's not too different from the level of complexity of the HDMI mods to install. The HDMI mods used to also do RGB at the same time, but they don't support that anymore for cost reasons.https://retrorgb.com/n64rgbcompatible.html

>>12729835>I know the M64 is open source and *could* get all the cores mister has but I don't think that's gonna happenWe’ll see. ModRetro absolutely knows how having the ability for multiple cores is extremely attractive. If they’re smart (and they definitely have the marketing smarts, the money, and one of the top programming guys involved) as soon as they get past ironing out launch roadmap and bugs, they’d very quickly atleast announce they’re working on releasing more cores. This instantly sets them apart from the A3D. Add on potentially selling cartridge adapters, controller adapters, etc? Easy money.I had several friends say they’re not currently interested, but once it has SNES and/or PSX cores it’s an insta-purchase for them.
>>12730694The issue I think m64 is going to run into is first, no snac port. Secondly and more importantly. Lotta people that make these cores are not going to want to make anything for anything related to Palmer Lucky for political reasons.

>>12737285After the epstein files, not really
>>12737180It's pointless to act like it makes a shred of difference, Anduril makes high-tech drones for the US military, a single drone likely makes more profit than everything Modretro has ever made combined. It doesn't matter if Modretro completely went bankrupt because by some miracle their protests actually did anything, it would not even be the equivalent of Palmer losing pocket change in the long run. If you feel like you can't sleep at night unless you refuse to buy it, fine, but insisting that others also not buy it just because you disagree as if that would make the slightest bit of difference is just idiotic and virtue signaling. Even stupider when a tech site "refuses" to cover it while they have no problem covering other products that are marred in similar controversy, such as that new Neo-Geo.And I support the M64 not because of Palmer's views, in fact I am against them, but because it's heavily open source and repairable. We need more products like that, it looks more repairable and configurable than the Steam Deck, which is quite a feat for a modern consumer device. Analogue are the opposite of that, most other devices are the opposite of that, Palmer is clearly doing this because he actually is passionate about the product instead of caring about it churning a profit, he has Aduril for profit, this is purely for the love of the game, and that's why I support it and think it's asinine to be against it. Might as well go support Limited Run Games taking over production of retro games while you're at it, we need more products designed with the M64's philosophy and less products designed with Analogue's locked down philosophy. Politics behind the products be damned, even if a million people protested Modretro it would not effect Palmer's bottom line, but it would cause more closed down and consumer-unfriendly products like the Analogue3D to flourish over consumer-friendly, open source, and repairable products like the M64.
>>12737170I think alot of companies we interact with daily have military side ventures. As a random thought experiment, the sega genesis has a motorola SoC. Should people call it a box that supports war because motorola makes communications equipment for defense applications?
>>12737460The people going against the M64 and M64 alone will claim that is "whataboutism" every chance they get as if they just learned that word and that they can't avoid some of those products (Like both Intel and AMD's CPUs in a PC) so I guess that's perfectly fine them to compromise their morals in that situation, but don't you dare get an M64!Really, the argument about it being associated with weapons is a bullshit cop-out anyway, the real reason is because they disagree with the CEO's politics, but are not willing to admit it so they try to act like it's the weapons that are the problem because they know bringing up his politics would get a lot more pushback. And again, for the record, I am heavily against his political views, but I separate the art from the artist, and considering that even a million people refusing to buy modretro products would have about as much impact as a gnat's fart in a hurricane on his bottom line, I am going to choose to support the product that is actively trying to be super consumer-friendly and open source everything and supply replacement parts over a pointless crusade that will go nowhere and promote anti-consumer products.

>>12739478in the grand scheme of things the n64 is still sensibly priced. Its sales numbers were not stellar and there are a ton of cult games people talk about forever and theres still not really a shortage of old units
>>12739504A 64 by itself is 40-50 bucks. Add an expansion pack and that’s 50 minimum. OEM controllers usually go for around 35-50 dollars depending on condition. So if you want an oem controller and the expansion pak you’re looking at around 130-150.

Yes, I trust a product that is going to be off 99% of the time and due to it's design can't really run in a standby mode in the background to spy on you anyway. I sure as fuck would trust it a lot more than a smartphone or Windows, heard about how Microsoft tracked a guy across VPNs and multiple countries because of the spyware built into their OS?3. It's got no camera, no microphone, no web browser (who would even browse the web on it), nothing, what would it even spy on? Your N64 play habits?4. It's open source, anyone can see if there is anything shady in the code. And you can sure as fuck bet that people are going to pour though that code considering the controversy with the creator.
I see someone is having a meltdown, probably an Anal-log fanboi.
So from what I gather these systems are basically just glorified Misters in a nicer shell? Like, you can run whatever console you want off this thing, and carts aren't even mandatory?I am tempted to get one, if only because I can't be fucked soldering things, but it feels like there's a new one of these announced every month. I'm kinda leaning toward Superstation One.
>>12743260No. But maybe eventually.
W all these comments… is this real? Or is this whole fight ai generated? Because yall are console warring over who has the better 1996’s n64 recreation. I just came back to ask anyone who has all 3 at their disposal if you’ve tested them and what are your thoughts? For me I wouldn’t do this w any other system but the 64 has a special kind of nostalgia for me and even tho the library is small I love so many games on it and currently play them when I can and I never really stopped since I got mine way back when. So for me, I’m buying both because I like the open source of M64 and I like the design of the A3D. I just think it’s cool af that we’re getting these and what this means for other potential console clones or whatever w extra features like the ability to keep steady frames on stuff like Perfect Dark. This could lead to other revivals if they are successful enough. I just think these projects are cool because we are getting legit releases for a 1990s console long ded. How is that not cool for /vr? Fresh content for retro consoles ain’t a bad thing imo. TL;DR of those who have all 3 (og, A3D, M64) which do you like better this far in and why?
>>12741479FPGA is more accurate than original hardware so the only way for you to get the "authentic" authentic n64 experience is to order yours today.
>>12743275fixing some hardware bugs would be cool, might technically break compatibility in subtle ways i.e. a game is coding around the bug, but there's ways around that
>>12717852i thought you guys liked crtswhy are buying this thing just so you can play n64 games on a modern television?you guys sicken me>"man, you can't retro game without a crt">buys a 200+ dollar console just so he can play n64 games on his modern television
>>12717852crts must be overrated if people are buying this crap
>>12743275I feel like retro enthusiasts take >authenticity Too far. Or maybe it's just authenticity becoming a marketing buzzword that grinds my gears. I'm not too sure which it is. I only know that I played my old games on a shitty handheld tv as a kid and it in no way diminished the experience. I don't understand how people spend thousands in the pursuit of an authentic experience.
>>12743373Most people don't own a CRT. If I want to show a game to my friend or my sister while visiting I need something that connects to HDMI.
>>12743260>So from what I gather these systems are basically just glorified Misters in a nicer shell?Depends what system you're talking about. The SuperStation One or Multisysytem2? Yes, they are literally a MiSTer in a nicer shell, and with some ports built-in. They run the same MiSTer OS and cores. If you mean the Analogue3D or the M64 shown in OP's picture, then no. They are a FPGA implementation of an N64 but use completely different FPGAs and OS backend, the N64 core in the M64 is a port of the N64 core from the MiSTer by the same dev but it's not just literally loading MiSTer_N64.rbf in a different device, it uses a completely different FPGA design as well as it's own OS backend and had to be ported to it. You can't just load MiSTer cores on it, they would need to be ported, and not all would be able to since the hardware is very different.>>12743328These devices (and even many times software emulators) have options to break some of the limits of the original console at times, like overclocking components, rendering at higher resolutions, removing sprite limits, etc but as you said depending on the game it can break it, which is why they are optional and usually disabled by default.

>>12744965>It's specifically a large enough difference to notice because thats how people noticed. It was noticed because of a benchmark utility that's capable of registering 100Hz differences in the clock rate. However this clock rate is the SPU700. It's the music and sound that run ever so slightly too fast, NOT the console so no, nobody would ever have noticed since gameplay is timed to the vertical refresh, not the sound hardware.
