Is it hard to get an old computer and play games on them? I kinda feel like a nostalgia trip and I want to play on my first computer again (I can't remember which Macintosh Quadra it was but it was one of these) but is this a fool's errand?

Not necessarily hard but it will cost a decent amount of money, if you can't get it local shipping is fucking expensive and you run a big risk of something getting damaged in transport, especially the monitor. You can always try a virtual machine 1st, see how much fun you have, make sure it's not a fleeting interest where you end up with a bunch of hardware collecting dust.

Well.. getting a specific MAC is probably gonna cost you (a lot)
>>
95% you will play it for half an hour and then never power it up again.
Get into that whole old PC hardware thing only if you are into hardware in general and enjoy spending time on fixing broken stuff.
>>
lol just emulate them, what are you? some stupid luddite worshipping plastic??

You can get some generic windows 98 type of thing easily, but getting your childhood mac will cost a fortune and probably be tedious.

If you just want a nostalgia trip and are not actually not a hardware enthusiast then you'll have more trouble than fun

and are not actually a hardware enthusiast *

I brought a PPC mac 200 mhz, it came with mame installed which looked good on the crt. Tried the usual stuff like Marathon, Wolf 3d, Duke 3d, Doom. I never looked into it but I thought there would be more games consider how many people swear by the hardware.

For MSDOS you don't need a big box pc, book 386 is fine but you can go even simpler and get one of those single board computers, these things were used in things like kiosks but usually have something like a pentium 3, you might have to be careful about sound compatibility.
I have some big box stuff because I got it for free, I brought a 386 and 486 motherboard but there is no point running it now. Its not like an emulator, these mini systems feel like the real thing.

Its the easiest to get in and find a game that looks fun. You can have a CF with 20 years worth of games, install launchbox and stuff from exodos.

Hard? No. Expensive? Yes.

an imac g3 is gonna be like 50 bucks
a spindle of blank CDs is cheap
the repo and the garden exist

lies, similar to above you can grab early core era system for cheap, fire XP onto it with an old 750ti or even up to 1st gen titan. sub 200 bucks the lot. gog installers work on xp, and if you are actually hardware inclined XP64 is a fun little nightmare to work with

well yes, but actually no.
If you're a zoomer shit, you're probably right and better off emulating.
Those who grew up with the beige bastards will find hundreds of hours of entertainment replaying old favourites and playing games you missed out on in your youth. It's bliss, I tell you.
Tinkering is fun too, so it's actually a bonus.

Problem with going all-in on old pc's is the good parts cost a fortune and the further back you go the more you get fucked over by getting enough compatible ram to get a good experience as those old form factors at speeds that work are getting rare. What really fucks over dos and win95 era builds are sound cards though.

It's easy if you're buying a socket7 / slot1 system or newer. Once you delve into 486 territory and want optimum performance there can be severe hiccups that require experience + trial and error.

An example is the HOT433 motherboard which is fast and dandy BUT has pretty devious shortcomings that may cost you days to find out...
i.e.
-does not work with all hard drives or CF cards(despite newest BIOS)
-not equipping it with cache can lead to an unstable board

I spend days hunting down "instability issues"(inspecting cache, ram and cpu) when in reality the board was not reading the whole disk correctly and threw up various faults.

On the other hand once you got a late era 486 system running(high fsb + Am5x86 + best settings) it's such a awesome experience... especially with a wavetable sound card or an external midi module.
Simp-ly Lovely.

A good all around system would be based on a SuperSocket7 board, with PS/2 ports, where you can insert anything from a K5 to a K6+ or PMMX. TomsHardware still has some pages where reviews and comparisons can be found - maybe use wayback machine for this.

There's of course many great Socket 7 systems around that, when you clock them up to 83mhz, are in parts faster than the SS7 systems.

The safest bet would be snatching an OEM system based on the intel BX platform which has PS/2 ports, is stable and can run a wide array of titles depending on the fsb & cpu used.

There's one more problem and that's when you do not use a crt an OSSC(pro) with an adequate lcd is needed. It's not fun to have vga signals on a modern display unless you go for specific semi-new models, like the EIZO s2133, which feature 1600x1200 resolution(5 x 320x200). Latter can only be had used and are pricey.

oops - should have been 5 times 320x240
>>
>>12718213
It's a waste of time and money and I say that as someone who has them.
