How do you pronounce some common retro words like Nintendo, Sega or Shin Megami Tensei?
It's tiring to try and get it right

Shin Meh-gah-may Ten-sai (probably the most incorrect of any of these)

Sega is pronounced "suh-gay".

Wrong. It was originally an American company and Sega is short for "service games"
>>
>>12719341
I just say everything normal. I know Japanese but I also still say "kuh-rotty" and "main-guh" when I'm talking to english speakers, or I just say "comics".

The places that pronounce it see-gah were introduced to Sega with the Master System and so had already decided on their pronunciation before that was a thing.

Yeah I say carry okie too. Just like how when I talk to Japanese people about a "collection" I say korekushon instead of just saying it in English like a dipshit. This is how loanwords work and anybody who thinks they're pronouncing even 30% of the words in the giant fucking hodgepodge of a language we call English in any way even remotely faithful to their source language is a dumbass.
>>
>>12719970
the difference is the Japanese don't have the phonology to pronounce it correctly

we do

>we do
english literally does not have the phonology to pronounce karaoke correctly.
>>
>>12719973
>Actually the language I speak and grew up with can say ANYTHING!
Most people think this until they study another language. Again, though, "karaoke" isn't the japanese word カラオケ, it's a loanword. If you're going to try to pronounce everything as it is in its original language, then the "oke" in karaoke is actually from the word "orchestra" so maybe you should say kah-rah-orka.

Funny because Japanese is one of the languages where you can 100% know how something is pronounced just by reading it and it's always consistent. But kids in the 80s had no way of knowing, and even official commercials would get it wrong, so some of these mispronunciations have been around for 40 years and will never go away.

Japanese syllables all have definitive pronunciations.
"Shi" is pronounced like the word "she", "n" is a uvular "n" sound.
"Me" is pronounced like the "me" in the word "met", "ga" is pronounced "gah", "mi" is pronounced like the word "me".
"Te" is pronounced like the "te" in the word "tell", "n" is the uvular "n" sound again, "se" is pronounced like the "se" in the word "sell", and "i" is pronounced as the "ee" sound like in the word "meet".
