What was it like to experience this in the 90s? Did people realize what they had or was it just another quirky videogame at the time.

>>12720193Most people probably didn't even play it I would think? People who loved JRPGs would generally have loved it of course. Nintendo Power made a big deal out of it so any JRPG fan who read that would have been ready to put it on at least a medium-sized pedestal. (I was in that category.) It's not really complicated... it's just another pretty and polished JRPG after all; it doesn't have any huge particular innovation in it that makes it special. If you liked the genre then you'd like this game. If you didn't then you probably wouldn't try it in the first place.>>12720196????????

>>12720193It was good, but for me it was disappointing after FFIII. It wasn't as deep or long of a game. Music was also not as good. It just wasn't an epic game and that's what I was hoping for. Overrated then and overrated now IMO. I've still played it once in a while since then. Probably 5 times since.
Those of us who knew it were collecting sealed copies of Chrono Trigger for a 10,000x markup and are making bank right about now.

>>12720193It was regarded very highly. I remember thinking that Magus looked badass but was weak as hell when you play as him. But now that I'm older and wiser, I realized that he's easily the third best character in a normal game after Crono and Robo. He only falls behind in NG+ and farming tabs for hours, which shouldn't even count for grading a character.
I didn't have a N64 but there was a time when all my friends were addicted to smash. One friend who was a complete asshole gave me a bunch of his old games including CT. I asked him what it was about and told me it was garbage. It made sense when his save file only had 35 minutes on it. It ended up being a favorite of mine. The rest of this story is that he had around 10 SNES games and I got 4 of them he thought were shit, the rest went in the trash out of malice. I have a vivid memory of him dangling a Yoshi's Island cart in front of me and saying "I bet you'd love this anon" before throwing to the ground and stamping on it a couple of times until it cracked. I was pretty lucky to get Chrono out of that. Also got Buster Busts Loose which was pretty fun.

I loved it so much that, being a stupid fucking kid, I took the manual with me on family vacation to read in the car. I left it in the hotel room and didn't realize it until 4 hours into the drive back home. I'm still fucked up about it. I didn't have any idea what I had.I lost the cart many, many years ago. Probably after my mom took it away from me because she was convinced there were demons in the cartridge that hypnotized me into being glued to the TV screen for hours. I suspect she threw it out eventually. I'm 34 now. I don't speak to her anymore.

I played it completely blind and the only moment that really sticks in my head was stepping on the teleporter in the Ice Age and getting sent to a magical city in the sky. I remember pausing the game and making some popcorn so I could munch on it while I walked around exploring Zeal.
Nobody really cared about it except for turbo nerds. My best friend at the time instantly declared it his favourite and I thought back then (and still do now) that it was just because of Dragonball. I owned, played and beat the game on original hardware back then. I did everything there was to do. I wrote my own notebooks of every stealable item. I recorded every possible ending on my VCR. I played it with every possible combination of characters at every point in the game just to see the different dialogue. And still thought then as I do now: meh.
