What are some good games for this thing? I know it had as much or even more shovelware than the fucking Wii but I want to see what games are actually worth playing on it

Champ Games homebrews are pretty good.

>What are some good games for this thing?
In the case of the 2600 "good" is a relative term. The hardware is so weak that games were severely restricted on this thing. There's entire genres of games which are completely non-existent and impossible on this console. If you like watered down ports of late 70s-early 80s arcade games then great. This console has much of that. But sadly, very little else.

People overestimate the amount of unique games the 2600 has, it's got like ~500-600 games excluding homebrew. The Wii has 1500 excluding WiiWare. I think what throws people off is the amount of bootlegs, renames and multicarts which makes people think the library numbers in the thousands. I won't speak to the quality, but the Wii most definitely has more shovelware on its own than the 2600 has a library and %wise it's probably not even close either with how cynical the waggleslop was.

Anyway some recent highlights. Enduro is a chase racer focused on just passing cars before a visual time limit (a day passing). The basic concept is simple, but it uses changing weather conditions to complicate things. You can go quite fast and still avoid most things if your reactions are good which isn't always a possibility for the genre in gen 2. It's a popular game, so you'd likely have seen it on some lists anyway, but it was fresh on my mind.

As for something different but still decent, Revenge of the Beefsteak Tomatoes held my attention for a bit. It's got a simple presentation and an odd choice of subject matter. Your goal is to shoot the colored blocks to capture them and then shoot them somewhere on the corresponding colored line at the bottom of the screen to build walls (which block shots). You can be shot at from both sides and occasionally wall-breaking plants will grow on your wall.

Ghostbusters wasn't as bad as I've heard either (when you rtfm), but that tends to be a theme with AVGN featured stuff. I thought the Commando port was neat too, but it repeats elements a whole lot more and the back of the box screenshot is edited to make the "boss" look far more engaging which is pretty funny.

In general I haven't run into anything incomprehensibly bad yet, a more common issue is games being too simple and/or short.

the same lolcow from the sega thread. you haven't ran into anything. you used ai to generate all of this text, stole the screenshots from another website and posted this cancer here to keep your cringe thread alive.

>Played only the megadrive, I didn't even know Sega Saturn and Dreamcast existed in my country, I had a PS1 and everyone had it(but I discovered that in Italy there were fans and people who bought both SEGAS). I think I discovered both consoles online while exploring games at my teens after discovering AVGN.
>I would say that yeah now that i'm full /vr/ I'm starting to get tired of SEGA fans, but SEGA consoles I emulated them and I would say that Sega saturn is an half dissapointment, whil the dreamcast I would say it's an interesting machine, for me it's more like a PS1 on steroids IMO, that sure was fun at release with the fact playing online and some good ports, like quake 3, I liked even some old ports like Silver, Kiss, Soldier of Fortune, GTA 2, soul reaver, Spiderman I liked the system but I see it underwhelming in terms of games but I like it, but I notice how it lacks a second joystick and more trigger buttons.
Cringe. It really is the same loser schizo spammer.

There are no "good" games for this thing. But, at the time it was still new, it had SOME games to pass your time.
Don't listen to braindead Atari fanboys.

It was funny when you told people to "touch grass" and you leaned out of your tent with your filthy and damaged PSP to prove to anons that you actually owned real hardware - in a thread you created involving you having a mental breakdown over the genesis and snes. weird flex. lol.

Unironically ET. It got a bad rap because Atari overestimated demand. It had nothing to do withe game being shit, which it isnt

>The hardware is so weak that games were severely restricted on this thing
Well the graphics is smooth and the sounds are meaty. That's what makes 2600 so legendary. Most Atari 2600 action games have better feeling feedback than NES games in my opinion.
>There's entire genres of games which are completely non-existent and impossible on this console
Not if you added ROM banking and external SRAM like what many games did.

Anything from Activision or Imagic. The games from those two developers were usually much higher quality than a lot of the other stuff on the console

>hardware is so weak that games were severely restricted on this thing.

Decades of programming techniques developed and enough ROM at it, some pretty impressive games are possible.

It’s beyond anything the 2600 is capable of either. I was really impressed until I learned about the ARM coprocessor inside doing the bulk of the work. What’s the point of homebrew if you’re going to use hardware that didn’t even exist when the platform was supported?

I enjoy demon attack, especially the second mode where you can slightly curve your bullet trajectory after shooting.

Adventure is one of my favorite games of all time. I've played the randomizer mode on and off for decades when I just wanna veg out. I personally like all the oddities like Halloween, Texas Chainsaw, the Mystique games, Porkys, early "beatable" games like Raiders OTLA, ET, Superman, Haunted House, Secret Quest (not an early game but was released when the 2600 was still available in stores new)

That's disappointing... Stella has ARM cpu emulation now...

Space Shuttle was probably as good as a contemporary sim could be. Like most sims though, the fun is in you considering it cool or interesting. It uses the console switches for extra controls and it came with an overlay for that, but it's not needed.

You have to launch, stabilize orbit, dock, de-orbit, re-enter and land. The manual will tell you how in detail, but the game will leave you some room to correct. Messages are displayed in code which you'll also need the manual for. A bit of a read-em-up, this.

this is the same person that writes every day how they have played all of these games but now we've discovered that he hasn't played any title and is just flooding 4chan with screenshots from game sites. lmao.
>>

not much left in the tank for you, embarrassing failure. The board has improved greatly now that most people are aware of your schizo spamming and we can source all the board's spam to just (You). lmao.
>>
>>12722205
>What’s the point of homebrew if you’re going to use hardware that didn’t even exist when the platform was supported?
In this case I'll allow it. Even with the ARM chip doing the heavy lifting you still need to deal with the display hardware limitations and write yourself a bulletproof sprite/bg multiplexer. The "Pi in a NES cart" ones IMHO are beyond that point because the NES becomes dumb display hardware with very few restrictions placed on the Pi. This ARM on VCS is still enough of a challenge that it's worth the intellectual exercise imho.

fuck off, retarded loser
stop polluting every single thread, demented scum
>>
>>12722813
But that's exactly what YOU are doing. Do you really have nothing else to do? Go play your Atari 2600 masterpieces and leave this board the fuck alone. It's retro, but not to the point a game where the one that throws a stone the further wins (by RNG). We know you're a squealing piglet throwing around in shit and please stay that way.

I'm plenty autistic to not need to do so, anon. Not autistic enough to get mad at images on imageboards though. Each file is an archive containing screenshots. I even have Sega games ready to post at you, I assume that's your penchant.

It doesn't matter to me where people think I got the screenshots from. That's not the point of posting screenshots especially on a pseudo-anonymous imageboard. Feel free to keep bumping threads you don't want on the board though, seems counterintuitive.

No mention of Pitfall?

A great game that was the first great console platformer type game. Pitfall II is one of the greatest 2600 games as well.
>>
>>12720817
I really enjoy Asteroids, Space Invaders and Joust. Give them a spin if they look fun, but remember; most people agree that this console's best experienced as a home arcade. You play your game til you game over or get bored and plug in your next cart. You might wind up only playing them for 5-60 minutes at a time, but that's okay. They'll be there later. :3

>Conquest of Mars
Atari liked that one so much they re-published it under the real title
>>
>>12724369
That's pretty damn cool! It's very unusual for a large publisher to behave in such a sensible manner.
It's also one of the few Champ games that doesn't have an ARM cpu inside the cartridge.

Atari Age used to say stuff like Cosmic Ark was a super rare 9/10 which I doubt since you see it on ebay all the time. I played it in real life on some weird pirate clone.
That game has such a weird dream like graphical presentation, the stars in the background use the ball object repeated over and over which is just impressive. I think its the variety of the graphics that stop it becoming boring. Searching for the name "cosmic ark" might some smart ass real life thing that exists in space that they turned into a name, real clever I guess.

BMX airmaster, another game that supposedly is super rare that you can get for $5. Amazing graphics and pretty fun. Yep Sculptured software, the guys who ported MK2 to Snes.

>>12722205
2600 is pretty close to tapped out, there is pretty much no processing power left to make graphics better. Pitfall 2 had a special chip so they probably would have added a cpu eventually. The arm has to control the io pins to communicate with the Atari so the effective speed is much slower, similar to what was available in the 80's.

For example you want to calculate the physics of your ship or whatever, you would turn off the screen every 2nd line for maybe 100 extra lines of calculations. The arm processor means you don't have to have those ugly lines. You can even pretend you just have a huge cartridge with a big lookup table.
Draconian is a good example, it looks and plays amazing.

On the forums they sometimes talk about bus stuffing, I think that really is just the arm doing everything.

>>12721019
Also surprising how fun pole position is, it just needs more tracks.
>>
>>12724358

One of the few actual fun games on the system.
