Recently been playing a bunch of the old Microprose flight sims. They're all based on picking a region, arming your plane, finding the best flight path to the objectives on the map and then just doing endless random missions until you die. Even if you fail a mission because you got too damaged or run out of fuel, it's still fine to continue on to the next one, just like in a real war.

F-117A Stealth Fighter is by far the best of them. Easiest to get into and control. Gunship 2000 being second best but is far harder and fiddly control wise. The rest seem to get overly complicated and go way too far in the sim direction.

Are there any other or modern games that work in the same way in terms of a mission randomizer career? I think only IL-2 does that nowadays...

Also, played this Harrier Jump Jet game that's also part of that series. It has the most ridiculous terrain popup I've ever seen. Can't believe you can see the sky and ground but the mountains get rendered only once you're close enough, lol.
>>
Microprose rarely put a foot wrong, everything I played was excellent. I've got a soft spot for one of their earlier sims F15 Strike Eagle 2 as it was responsible for me getting into the genre

Aces over europe/aces of the pacific had great flight dynamics and variation. Hooks in well with a stick and rudder setup. https://youtu.be/DwT-7KubfLY
>>
>>12720972
You should try Strike Commander.
>>
I used to play a lot of Hellcats Over the Pacific with the add-on. It had some fun bombing missions. It was long since I played it now though so don't know how well it has aged. Also played a lot of Chuck Yeager's Air Combat.
>>
>>12720972
It is said that the MAC release is the ultimate version of this game due to higher res and bugfixes.
>>
>>12720972
>Gunship 2000
with the best version being on the Playstation, yes it was consolized but it fixed all the control issues

Can these games be played on a keyboard or keyboard+mouse?
>>
>>12720972
Nuclear Option
>>
>>12721628
Sure. It's easier and feels better with a joystick, but I played both Microsoft Flight Simulator 4.0 and Chuck Yeager's Air Combat on a keyboard with numpad back in the day, it's fine.

The higher resolution was nice. Mac didn't have as many games as PC, but the few it got often had that 640x480 resolution.

>want to play old flight sim
>get it running off of abandonware site
>look at controls, they want to use the bracket keys for some reason or another as if brackets are common things to use
>can't change keybinds
>european keyboard means whatever is bound to brackets is bound to 8 and 9
>Red Baron 3D completely ruined forever for me

I just wanted to shoot some planes.
Microsoft Combat Simulator is pretty good though
>>
>>12721243
I looked into it but seems pretty much the same as F-117A but with fewer options (doesn't show mission map, can't arm plane).
>>12721282
Interesting sandbox of a game, seems it has a rare test pilot mission type where you can be launched from under the wing of another plane.
>>12721294
I did but it's literally just like most flight games, scripted story missions which you have to do over and over until you succeed with no failure allowed.
>>12721502
Aces of the Pacific is THE best of the old WW2 games I'd say. Still play it nowadays sometimes. It has that endless war campaign type and is easy to play, understand and get into. There's also an Aces Over Europe, same game but in Europe where the planes are harder to spot/identify since everyone is green...
>>12721621
Yes, I tried it but the controls felt too sensitive and they increased the enemy count by a lot from the PC version. Makes it much more fast paced and frantic of a game where it's more difficult to pick proper targets and find the objective ones. Still, was funny to see it use the same style font and menus as XCom.
>>
>>12720972
Anyone ever make rom hacks of these or something? Where would you go for DOS rom hacks?
>>
Highly recommend using the DOSBox Alt-F12 speed up key for any flight sim as it makes them much more playable with such time-compression.
>>12721635
Yes, love it but wish it had time compression and more base vs base setups for each map than just one considering how huge the maps are. Wish I could play a smaller scenario on that cool city islands map instead of one that is impossible to finish since it'd take all day because it involves taking over the whole map!

>>12721912
Keyboard only for sure but not sure about with mouse. Personally, I use an Xbox controller and an external program to map the keyboard commands to it. You have to leave the game to detect it as a joystick though because mapping keyboard arrows to it will prevent proper smooth turning since it won't register diagonals properly when two directions are pressed at once with keyboard mapping.
Makes me really want to get the Xbox Elite controller for all it's extra buttons and Windows supported keyboard mapping along with its dedicated button to switch saved button mapped profiles.
>>12721903
Hm, looks like one of those modern 3D remakes.

>>12721912
if you're playing it through dosbox, I think at least dosbox-x (which is what I use) uses US keyboard layout by default (or otherwise you can set it from the DOS command-line with KEYB US) so brackets are whatever keys are to the right of P.

It also has a handy mapper for remapping keys or mouse/joystick inputs.
>>
>>12721903
This is a game that trully needs a decomp alongside the DOS Amiga original, and would shine in hires, this as a-10 cuba because fuck trying to emulate mac games on windows with a pole.

Well retard, most Microsoft sims have their own accelerated time feature. This is from F-15 II.
>>
>>12721934
>>12721912
Dosbos-staging, for example, lets you define a joystick which you can setup in the game.
So for Microsoft games keyboard/mouse/controller.
It's not rocket science.
Seems like this one guy is shitting out disinformation because he is completely clueless about gaming in DOS.
>>
>>12722104
I know but it's still slow, except for in Gunship 2000 where it feels like it actively skips frames and goes up to 10x.

A10 Cuba I used to play, they decided to go full on with non textured polys and it looks super sharp. I was really impressed that the roads had traffic you could shoot and there were caves on the side of the mountains you could try and fly through.

Had this older game called Jet Fighter 3, the camera does a pretty cool zoom from space and it has lots of bridges to fly under, the physics feel a bit stiff in an on rails sort of feel.

Also had this game called Flight Sim Tool Kit, you make hilarious creations with giant flying spaceships if you want.

A 10 Cuba was on pc too.

F-19 Stealth fighter, THE first one and THE precursor of the whole F-XXX series.
Still playing tis on dos box, the sound will make you want to cut your own ears but sneaking your way between SAM radar sites to fuck that orbiting Mainstay and its escort with three well placed AIM-9s are pure kino

>>12726264
They need to add the genesis md soundtrack back re-recorded in soundblaster and roland.

>>12726248
Yes, it is good, also DiD is active, and i hope TAW as EF2000 is next so DCS fags learns that old shit can do better than them.

And maybe TFX+Tornado

based aces player.
I enjoyed the hell out of these games as a kid. For early dos it had incredible range and depth. Trying to land a shot up plane on a carrier was a unique challenge depending on what systems failed, the campaigns were great too. The difficulty customization menu had ao many options and getting in a tough battle and being told you shot down a real world ace added to the immersion.
>you have bailed out of your airplane! you hit the tail and did were killed in action
>>
US Navy Fighters had some interesting cutscenes using that new CD technology, and live actors. great game too. https://youtu.be/LXsyOwNA_JY
>>
>>12726363
This is a game whom even the japanese console port needs translation due to the exclusive campaign, as a recomp for the og dos release since usnf97 is literally unplayable on modern windows and FA lacks the dos cutscenes.
>>
>>12726371
Bummer. I havent played the game in 25 years. Just reminiscing. I swear one of those 90s modern games had Ukraine and Russia as a conflict.
>>
>>12726419
Yeah it was usnf with the nato expansion.
>>
>>12721903
Mac had better 3D than PC for a hot minute there with QD3D.
>>
>>12726350
I think it was also the game that had the easiest landings of any flight game I've ever played which is good for that immersion factor without being annoying to have to do it realistically.

Yeah, the funny part is the mission briefing cutscenes of which there's several versions that just get replayed of a guy gesturing over a map in various ways and camera angles. Since the video quality is so low, you can't really tell whether the speech (which is the only thing that changes) is synced properly. I actually skipped through the whole Ukraine campaign videos to compare it to the present day war. It has the Russians sweeping the whole country and going westwards to complete their invasion within a few weeks while NATO provides air support for Ukrainian ground forces on the defensive. Meanwhile, a massive NATO army is getting built up on the Polish border and eventually invading from the west. This totally breaks the Russian army which runs back to Russia within a week.

>>12726272
Yeah, I presume there's really no good reason to play it nowadays though with F-117A being superior in every way?

I read about how people got hyped about what some new stealth plane will look like and Microprose jumped at the idea, making a whole game about a false design made by some model kit company (Testor) that never really existed in reality.
>>
>>12726507
The og devs
Digital image Design, they slso made f29 retaliator, robocop 3, epic and its sequel inferno.
>>
>>12726264
This looks sick. These early 90s flight sims have such pleasant gameplay loops if you can get past the jank.
