I just replayed this game for the 3rd or 4th time and every time I end up enjoying it more.
The levels are fun to explore, and the shooting is fun, which just proves that shooting with Tomb Raider-like controls could be made fun, Tomb Raider just sucked at it . Hunting for secrets is also very rewarding with the whole bonus challenge level thing to upgrade guns.

The only real flaws are
- some of the platforming can be ass. It goes by Tomb Raider rules but on a smaller scale (floor tiles are smaller) so sometimes it's a bit hard to gauge distances, especially when the lighting is lacking. Also the fact that you bounce off walls if you miss a jump and hit a wall really sucks; they should have made it so the character drops down instead so you can still save yourself by hanging onto the ledge. Later on once you get the jetpack a lot of of the platforming can be bypassed if you feel like it though.
- The gatling (powered up or not), is so overpowered that it becomes the best weapon to use in most situations except from situational explosives usage; at least until you get the energy weapon in the late game.
- the last 2 Rome levels before the final boss, and especially the last one, feel rushed and lazy as they mostly consist in a succession of under detailed mazey corridors, square rooms, and other copy pasted rooms. A shame that it ends on such a low note.

I'll have to replay it on the hardest difficulty one of these days since I've only done the third difficulty (twice).
also too bad Land of the Babes couldn't live up to it though to be fair that game was a budget release with a retail price equal to platinum re-releases. So, for that price, it would have been worth it.

My childhood game. Never got very far but replayed it as an adult and it was still good except the platforming and some levels were confusing. Especially that one part where you have to roll or somwthing beside a dumpster. No indication, no use for this mechanic in the entire game except this one part. Had to look it up
>>
>>12721689
the way strafe works is incompetent, drags down an otherwise decent 5th gen shooting system.
>>

>Especially that one part where you have to roll or somwthing beside a dumpster.

Huh, I don't remember this? I know that in the church level later on when you press the switches for the giant crosses it puts the player automatically in crouch mode and I'm always confused on how to go back to normal since I never use the crouching. I actually wonder if the crouching/rolling could be advantageous against enemies or if it's solely something to be used in deathmatch

>>12721698
I think it's fine and it makes sense with the way the game is balanced, the only issue iirc is that you can't initiate strafing while walking forward/backward, you have to stand still first and then press the strafe buttons
>>
>>12721716
Sorry you have to push a dumpster, which you only do in this one specific part in the game and never do again and were never told you can do. Looked it up cause I remember it pissing me off

Ah right. This same dumpster can be pushed in the back alley of the intro city level(s), next to the ladders and catwalk, revealing a secret.
The entire city area at the start of the game actually acts as a tutorial but to be fair I agree that what that area is supposed to teach the player isn't always well telegraphed

anyway there is also a hint in that level about there being something to find since you can see the area this dumpster leads to through a window when underwater, just before reaching this area

I'm going to say that I enjoyed Time to Kill more than any of the Tomb Raider games it copied.
The movement feels more responsive than Tomb Raider particularly for the combat but the platforming is worse, especially the bouncing of walls when you jump, hate that shit especially in that castle chandelier area.
But unlike Tomb Raider that shoved combat into the game despite it being so bare bones and weak Duke's combat is actually enjoyable and the enemies and weapons feel crafted around it.
Tomb Raider's level design is better overall but Duke has more charm and the secrets feel good to find unlike Tomb Raider where it's just more ammo for things you already have and health packs.
TR's highs are better but Duke is more overall fun to play, given that for some damn reason the TR devs thought that combat should have been such a focus and that it needed vehicle sections.

>the secrets feel good to find

This is true except for one thing: the power-ups (invisibility, invulnerability etc) don't last long enough. They should be at least 50% longer. Most cases you're going to find a power up and it'll fade away before you get to do anything with it, even if you know where to find the enemies. There is an especially egrogious example in one of the underground mine level; there is a narrow path surrounded by lava and then when you're in the middle of it 2 liztroops spawn in front and 2 more spawn in the back (I've never managed to beat this section withoutu losing a continue), there is a secret invulnerability before it but even if you go as fast as possible it'll fade away at the same moment the enemies spawn.

Overall this is a nitpick but it's a missed opportunity to have kick ass moments with the power ups. It's like that ONE invicibility star in Super Mario Bros 3 that you're given in a slow autoscroller with no enemies aorund.
>>
>>12721689
Yes the game is good once you get used to the controls, just like TR
>>
>>12721689
I love the game and I notice there are nostalgic enjoyers of it, people who newly discover it and like it, and then the detractors, most of whom admit never even playing it.
If you want to play a retro PS1 game this is definitely something to try out. Jumping is not good though, game could have been longer, it could have had bots in deathmatch, maybe some secret levels.

Pro tip: Use pipe bombs to mine each side where they spawn. Detonate them when they spawn.

Theres a secret middle game to consider too. Danger Girl is the same devs on the same duke raider engine but based on a comic instead.
>>
>>12722085
I enjoyed all 3 of these games. Time to Kill was definitely the best, with Danger Girl being 2nd best in my eyes. I honestly didn't think Land of the Babes was bad at all but I'm not going to dispute it with anyone who dislikes it.
>>
I'm replaying Land of the Babes right now and frankly it's nowhere near as bad as it's 37 metacritic score implies.
I think most people that played it and dumped on it only played the first few levels and wrote it off.
>>
>>12722560
I beat the game and it definitely wasn't bad, but all the underwater levels weren't my thing. The music gives the game a unique identity, but I would have chose something different.
>>
>>12721689
its the superior Tomb Raider to me. and better muzak. but still too hard 4me. got lost in the sewers or something and used cheat codes to levelskip. couldn't beat last boss w/o weapons cheat.
>>
>>12721689
I just hate how slowly he moves compared to Duke 3D.

Oh man time to kill was brilliant back in my day sunny jimmy. I use to rent it from network video for the week, all the time. The cheats got you all the guns but it was more fun to find the secrets. As others have said lots of the later levels got pretty lazy, especially the Roman ones. Those firebat motherfuckers sucked. It was cool and novel to see the different versions of the first level.
>>
In the castle level, anyone knows if the big double door that leads to the throne room can be opened and if so how? I always go around from the ceiling using a secret place.
Same thing with the final big door in the church level.

Seems odd to me to going through secrets would be the only way
>>
>>12722760
>Those firebat motherfuckers sucked

They're a pain yes, it's best to spam with shotgun/gatling and hope for the best (ironically I think the upgraded gatling makes it harder to hit them since the laser shots are slower than bullets). If you managed to get the upgraded pistols from the first level (hardest Challenge to find), I think it'd probably work great against them too.
But at the same time it's good to have different enemy types, outside of Liztroops/Pigcops, their variants, and Octobrains; there aren't a lot of different enemies. Turrets are only used twice, tanks only once, and the mini octobrains in the final level as well only once. I don't think the game feels lacking in that regard because Liztroops and Pigcops are so well designed that they're always fun to fight; but a bit more variety would have bee nice.

I've asked this before and I'm going to ask this again, are you a bot? You make detailed posts and post the same image collages which is highly unusual for 4chan. Just wondering. If you are human, then I do acknowledge your history with retro gaming and your contribution to these threads.

It never ceases to amaze me people's tolerance for the absolute shittiest jank western PS1 releases. This game and it's sequel is just awful anon. Same with Siphon Filter and all other western developed third person shuut games, there isn't a single good one on PS1.
>>
I've started replaying on the hardest difficulty, so far it doesn't appear that much harder except there are a few more enemies here and there compared to the third.

I have Danger Girl lined up once that's done.

What a great way to entice you with a convoluted fucking sewer level. I got stuck and said fuck it.
>>
>>12725407
I definitely want to try Danger Girl but I keep forgetting lol. It looks good though.
>>12725436
You too Dave? How many of you fucking guys got filtered by the first level? Maybe it's because I've played the game so much, but I can absolutely breeze through that level without any effort.

duke nukem is a weird series. when people think of Outer they are actually thinking of one game, the 3d one. Literally everything is constipated from bad to mediocre. Duke nukem is not a series really is one game

Danger Girl eh? I remember seeing this artist throughout the years.
Maybe I'll try that game next if it's from the same guys that did Time to Kill.
>>
the controls are garbage but i must say i enjoy this game more than any whack-a-mole GoW clone.
>>
>>12725545
It's one of my most favorite comics. Such a delightful cheese-fest.

You're a retard like this guy. >>12723541
>>
>>12726216
But im right, how many people are going "oh wow remember that classic, Duke Nukem: Land Of The Babes"
>>
>>12726263
Thanks for doubling down on your stupidity. We all appreciate you humiliating yourself for our entertainment.
>>
>>12726268
nah hes right. nostalgia enjoyment is low IQ. this game was trash when it first came out and its trash now. just people trying to ape off the IP with a rushed low quality piece of shit for a quick buck
>>
>>12721689
>>Looks like it's TIME TO KILLâ„¢
aw yus
