What were they thinking giving Poo's only weapon in the game a 1/128 chance of dropping on an enemy that only spawns in one area and cannot be returned too once you beat the boss?
They were thinking: he's a PSI beast so let's give the players' a little optional stat boost as a secret drop. You don't need any of Poo's equipment. He is enlightened, doesn't really need earthly objects
>>12721936I suppose, the buff is very minor but I still ended up getting way to over levelled trying to get his weapon.
he wasnt supposed to have a wep at all they just added that for parity
>>12721936You aren't supposed to grind for his equipments
>>12721950Meant for >>12721939
>>12721950Grinding unintentionally is the only way because you can only get it from this one enemy and the drop chance is so high. I tried to do it without over levelling but it is just impossible, I played on original hardware so no save states to reset my levels back.
>>12721982The point is, you don't need that item. It's meant as a surprise secret weapon only for those who get lucky
The impossible one is the Gutsy Bat.
>>12722045Yeah this is the one actual hardest one to get.Magic Frypan comes close
You don't need it and the game never tells you it exists. The only way to know about it beforehand is reading a guide, and the only reason to grind for it is FOMO.If you're prone to FOMO then do NOT read guides, it's that simple. Get into games as blind as possible and protect your own sanity by simply not knowing. I'm a bit of a compulsive completionist myself which is why I prefer it when games don't enable that. I don't want games to have achievements or completion percentages, I don't want to know any of that because I probably will care about it.Just keep that away from me and let me enjoy the game.
>>12722507Poo has exactly one piece of equipment for each of his slots. After getting his armor pieces, that are easier to come by, it wouldn't be hard to extrapolate that there must a weapon for him somewhere in the game.
>>12722641First time I played the game, at the point I might have wondered about that I was raping with PK Starstorm for it to become something I needed to go and find
>>12722645It's nowhere near as broken as you're trying to sell. There are enemies in the Deep Darkness area (the weakest area will you have access with that PSI) that can take two Starstorms and still survive.
He doesn’t need it, without the internet or players guide most people wouldn’t know it exists. Not because of the rarity but because not having a weapon would be a unique thing about him.
>>12721930>it'd be a funny tongue in cheek nod towards the playerAnd it was. You don't need it, you'd be retarded to go out of your way to grind for it.
>>12722664And you still have Ness, Paula and Jeff.Having the SoK is not something that magically makes the game go from unfair to fair. It's an extra item that's meant to be obtained only if you're lucky, as an extra.
>>12721982Yep, I heard about it years after my 1st playthrough, when I went back I decided to do it for no real reason. I was already steam rolling everything but some bosses just playing normally. I was almost level 90 by the time it dropped. I was one hit killing almost everything for most of the game after that lol.
I'm glad I didn't know about the SOK on my first playthrough, anyway even if I did I don't think I would have halted my progress just for 1 item.I got it later, when I did another playthrough on GBA. Playing the GBA version made grinding for 1/128 drops easier since I could just play the game everywhere, especially on the shitter, so I would grind for hours until I finally got all the equippable rare items.SoK wasn't the worst, as other anons already said the hardest one to get is Gutsy Bat, simply because the enemy that drops it is rare, and is on the end game.I got all of the rare items on my GBA file, but that playthrough was specifically for that. If I did that on my very first playthrough it would have ruined the experience.I also got the SoK without even trying on a later playthrough of Mother 2 on Super Famicom
>>12722045>>12722058>>12723693I didn't even know the gutsy bat was rare til like a decade later. I got it my 1st playthrough, no grinding, and thought it was a joke item because it never hit anything so I just put it away.
>>12723838Really? Sounds more like the Casey Bat.
>>12723838You are mistaking it with the Casey Bat.Gutsy Bat is only dropped by Bio Kraken on the area before Gyiyg.Extremely low chances of you getting it, it can happen, but yeah, the one you're talking about is Casey Bat
>>12721930>People will be talking about this gay sword for decades.
The worst thing about the Sword of Kings is that it's in the latter half of a lengthy dungeon so you can't even cheese it with RNG manip like you can with the other 1/128 equippables. At least not easily.
>>12724080How do you RNG manip the others?
>>12721936>as a secret dropDid any MOTHER 2 guides talk about the sword?I know the guide in EB does
>>12722641>it wouldn't be hard to extrapolate that there must a weapon for him somewhere in the game. And? His other equipment comes in loot containers. A normal person would just assume that the weapon's container is gonna show up at some point, or that they missed it somehow. You would have zero reason to try to backtrack and look for it. Even less reason to assume that it's a rare, missable drop and that you should grind the Starman Super enemy specifically.
>>12724121RNG updates whenever letters are drawn or when any sprite cross certain thresholds on screen. If you load a save and do the exact movement and menuing until you initiate a battle with an enemy that drops the item, you can start the battle with a predetermined RNG value that guarantees the drop. You can find videos online of the movement routes for each item. You have to be pretty precise for it to work. It works for the Sword of Kings too, it's just really difficult since you have to maintain the manip through the entire first half of the dungeon.
I recall something about Itoi or a game designer's intent that the 1/128 chance drops were intended to be a "nice surprise" for a few lucky players, and create an opportunity to discuss their lucky find among friends.Especially in an era of playground rumours before every game's secret was a web search away.My first playthrough of Earthbound was on a SNES emulator CD-ROM from a car boot sale, an unlikely British 10 year old playing the game Nintendo never brought to Europe. In that playthrough, I'm pretty sure I got the Gutsy Bat from the Bio Kraken too.It was a badly trained ROM though, where the trainer (similar to an intro) implemented its cheats incorrectly, and disabling infinite PP would just allow the PP counter to drop to zero, but your actual PP would remain at maximum and allow you to cast PSI freely.I'm actually curious if that ROM happens to exist anywhere online, I don't have that CD any more.
>>12724314>It was a badly trained ROM though, where the trainer (similar to an intro) implemented its cheats incorrectly, and disabling infinite PP would just allow the PP counter to drop to zero, but your actual PP would remain at maximum and allow you to cast PSI freely.
It was meant to be bonus, I get it, but couldn't it be a better implemented?Something that's reasonable to get after you learn about it?
>>12724493Maybe the main idea was to make it a rare item on purpose though.Again you never really need it to beat the game. And I doubt you'd want to waste a turn using a physical attack instead of using PSI
>>12724504>Again you never really need it to beat the game. And I doubt you'd want to waste a turn using a physical attack instead of using PSIThis is a pretty dishonest point you keep making over and over, no one even complained that the sword is needed.
>>12721930Ha ha. Earthbound is POO.
>>12721930Missables are meant to encourage repeat playthroughs, in the absence of the game being good enough on its own to warrant playing again. It's a vile tactic that shamelessly preys on helpless autists and OCD fags.
>>12724538Then what are you complaining about? That a bonus item that's meant to be rare is rare? It's not obtuse, rare missable drops are common in RPGs.
>>12724548Is bad design ok when it's bad on purpose? Is this what you're saying?
>>12724551Optional items are optional. It's not bad design. You just got unlucky that you didn't get it first try (that is, if you even played the game and aren't just baiting)
>>12724565The Sword of Kings made no one's experience with Earthbound better. It did however made the experience of many people worse. This is objectively bad design.
>>12724569>It did however made the experience of many people worseIt wasn't the SoK's fault if the players go into it with a FOMO mindset.Normal people back in the 90s either didn't know about it and finished the game with or without it, or read/heard about it and thought "oh cool I hope I get it", but kept playing the game normally if it didn't drop, instead of grinding for an item that you anyway know is not mandatory. It's your own fault, not the game's.Theres old 80s RPGs that have actual missable rare drops that are also key items to finish the game
>>12724569>designing your game around the possibility that a videogame masochist might get their hands on itWhen you don't use a product as intended, your opinion on whether or not it's designed appropriately is moot.
>>12723846>got EB as a kid NIB>followed the guide>believed for decades the way to get the Gutsy Bat was from Krakens in the last part of Ness's Magicant because the guide showed it dropping from them and the player having it in that area>turns out the guide was 100% wrong and I just wasted hours grinding Krakens for nothing as a kid trying to get the best batI also believed the official NP players guide for FF6 when it told me once I entered Kefka's Tower I wouldn't be able to leave again. Spent ages grinding everyone up to avoid getting soft-locked, and it was entirely unneeded.
>>12724325nobody gives a fuck what this old ageing faggot has to say, xhe cheated on mega man by using the pause glitch so xhe can fuck right off
>>12724569>It did however made the experience of many people worse. For god's sake dude.
>>12721930They were thinking:>what can we do to get a child who won't be born for decades to cry about a perk for dedicated players because they/them saw another child crying about it in the internets.
>>12725147why did you describe yourself?
>>12725187>Implying japanese 90s developers post here
>>12725225anon, I....
>>12721930Bad game design
First and only time an RPG has missable rare items. We need to stop liking earthbound
>>12724314>playing the game Nintendo never brought to EuropeMy shitty local game shop had a copy and they also sold adapters to let you play USA games
