Why was the GameCube's Game Boy Player so underutilized compared to the Super Game Boy?

The GBP was capable of adding new palettes like the SGB, but it could also add rumble functionality for GameCube controllers.
With that being said, practically no games actually used either of these features whatsoever.

Here is the COMPLETE list of games that feature automatic adjusted palettes when played on this thing:
>Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
>Shikakui Atama wo Marukusuru Advance: Kokugo Sansu Rika Shakai
>Shikakui Atama wo Marukusuru Advance: Kanji Keisan
>Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3
I am aware games like Mario vs. Donkey Kong and Sonic Advance 3 have "Game Boy Player palettes", but you have to manually enable them in the options and can do so on a standard GBA. It's not the GBP doing that unlike the above.

And for rumble-enhanced games: there's the above, but also:
>Drill Dozer
>Pokemon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire
>Summon Night: Craft Sword Monogatari: Hajimari no Ishi

That's it. Games you'd think would benefit greatly from rumble like Minish Cap or F-Zero Climax mysteriously don't have it. Why not?
The Super Game Boy's palette enhancer was used for literally HUNDREDS of games, yet devs couldn't even manage five for the GBP?

I doubt it sold many units.
>>
people didn't give a fuck about NES games in 2003
>>
>>12722276
Yeah. The GameCube itself didn't sell many units.
>>
It's also worth noting that the rumble detection was used most often to block those GBA video releases from running on it.
>>
>>12722250
The Super Game Boy could also "enhance" the audio of some games by using a MIDI set in the SGB cart.
Factor 5's port of the SEGA Genesis version of Animaniacs heavily takes advantage of the Super Game Boy's capabilities.

The Super Game Boy was also capable of booting any SNES ROM present in the Game Boy cartridge, which is what Space Invaders did.

These kinds of enhancements are pretty unnecessary for Game Boy Advance games, though. The palettes and rumble functionality are things built into the ROMs, too.
In fact, the Game Boy Player software actually put a darkening filter over GBA games and had pretty bad scaling and video output overall. The homebrew software Game Boy Interface is greatly preferred for playing GBA games on Game Boy Player hardware.

Yeah, Game Boy Video releases were blocked from running on Game Boy Player.
It was either to hide how fucking terrible the videos looked, or to prevent home-recording set ups from making copies of videos.
>>
>>12722470
What does that have to do with the Game Boy Player?
>>
>>12722250
Because the gamecube flopped in all regions and this thing cost half the price of the gamecube itself so it did not sell well. Also gba was pretty weak in sales in comparison to the previous gameboys and had its life cut short by the psp. Consequently this became a pretty niche product that only the most hardcore gba fans would be interested in, hence its rarity and value in the U.S today. That said nintendo likely did not see any value in adding support to games for it. All resources at the time probably got set to working on bigger projects

nta but the NES Classics releases on GBA I guess?

Like that could've been an actual good thing that Game Boy Player could have done, was to directly boot the stored NES ROM instead of playing it in GBA mode with the fucked display dimensions.
Look at this shit, the HUD text and Mario's neck is fucking squashed.

>why didn't grownups do things the way i want long before I was born?
They were fools. If only they'd had as tween like you as president of gamecube it would have won the console wars.
>>
>>12722250
People didn't buy a home console in 2001 to play handheld games from 1991, I would imagine.
>>
>>12722250
i bought this thing and i have no real memory of even using it. i remember doing some type of linkup thing with metroid prime/fusion?

Nobody wanted to go anywhere near that purple abomination

>Why was the GameCube's Game Boy Player so underutilized compared to the Super Game Boy?
because the original gameboy was being sold for roughly twice as long as the GBA, and going from monochrome to full color is a much bigger jump then "I dunno it looks better"

and then the DS came out, which did comically better then both the gamecube AND the gba, and also could play gba games, and was cheaper.
>>
>>12724194
gameboy games are literal monochrome NES games
>>
>>12722250
I don't think I've been able to get the rumble enhanced games to ever work properly. Do they require that you have the original GB Player disc or something?
>>
>>12722250
I have a GBP, the disc, and a GBI memcard.
Thing lags like shit (GBI is an improvement) and the GameCube d-pad sucks ass so you need a Hori controller or a GBA + adapter anyway.
I complained about it a lot in the past. The value went down for a bit but now it's back up which is crazy.

>Also gba was pretty weak in sales in comparison to the previous gameboys

It sold over 80 million units, in spite of a backwards compatible successor being released 3 years later and the also very popular PSP coming out at the same time. Combined GB and GBC sales were about 118 million, and they had 12-13 years to build that up before the GBA was released. GBA’s sales performance is more remarkable than any other /vr/ console/handheld besides PS2 and maybe PSX.
>>
>>12722276
I'd be surprised, literally everyone I knew with a gamecube had one
>>
>>12722250
Can this be activated in any of the gba emulators like mgba or vga? Also always thought mgba was the best gba emulator used it recently and it ran like shit next to vga idk but ill go through retro arch and these ganes you brought up anon

>The Super Game Boy's palette enhancer was used for literally HUNDREDS of games, yet devs couldn't even manage five for the GBP?
There's a funny paradox when it comes to work. Simple but optional jobs tend not to get done, where harder and just as optional jobs do. It's like a psychological thing where if it's an hour's work to fiddle with the contrast on the palette you already made it's always "I'll get around to it" and you never do. But if it takes time and effort to program in SGB palette area maps, you have to plan for it so it's more likely to get a "today is SGB palette day" thing in your schedule.
It's like PAL conversions on 3D consoles. Despite being a one line change to the viewport matrix it just doesn't happen. It's not a big enough job to specifically do and it's always on the back burner.

>The Super Game Boy was also capable of booting any SNES ROM present in the Game Boy cartridge, which is what Space Invaders did.
Taito technically cheated because there's a SFC ROM inside the GB port itself.
>>
>>12727694
Dude that's literally what I said
>>
>>12727749
>present in the Game Boy cartridge
Whoops, my bad! Forgot to read that part LOL.
>>
>>12725991
>gameboy games
>for a system that eats gba carts
big hmmm there bud
>>
It was around the time Nintendo realized its loyal fanbase would buy anything without them putting on any effort
>>
>>12728121
>emulated versions of n64 games on disc
I believe it.
>>
>>12728127
If you mean the two Zelda bonus discs, those were in fact, bonuses.
Ocarina of Time + Master Quest was a bonus disc for Wind Waker.
Collector's Edition (with Zelda 1, Zelda 2, OoT, Majora's Mask) was available through various promotions in different countries, often through Club Nintendo; it was not a retail release.

Animal Crossing was not emulated, that runs natively on GameCube hardware.
It's memory footprint is also small enough that you can eject the disc after loading the game, since the entire thing fits into RAM.
>>
>>12728284
>bonuses
That's even worse in all honesty. Same thing happened with a proper version of NES DK, too. Only Euros seemed to get that version in a somewhat non-temporary fashion.
