Where are the lines and the visible pixels? was i lied to?

That's a 480i game, 240p has scan lines as a result of larger gaps in the analog signal.

the scanlines are clearly visible even in the photo, are you people fucking blind?

The scanlines are thicker on a pvms which is more desirable so emulation uses them
>>
>>12722701
It's fine to care what the picture looks like but if it's to the point that you're making threads to complain about it or call other people out for not playing the *right* way, you have some sort of OCD or personality disorder.
Most of us don't care that much as long as the games we're playing are fun.

That is 480i anon
Both fields are filled

Moire patterns aren't scanlines
>>12722713
Even then, 240p only has visible gaps between the scanlines on aperture grille sets.
>>
>>12722808
the moire patterns AND the scanlines are both (extremely) visible. please get your eyes checked.
>>
>>12722789

It's more that the name of the game is in the image filename, it 'thought' for over 6 minutes (paid version btw) and then it definitely tells me that it's the wrong game. It's a fucking joke.

you see those gaps between the vertical pixels?
yeah that
If you're talking about the shit in emulator shaders, that's a limitation of the technology

https://andynumbers.wordpress.com/2016/07/21/lets-talk-about-tvl-count/

>A typical 19″ color TV tube from the 80’s and 90’s will have a TVL count of about 300 to 350, and even that is being generous. But that’s by design. You see, consumer’s hate flicker. And the standard NTSC 480i flickers by nature due to the interlaced picture. With such a low TVL count, the alternating scanlines overlap each other and blur together, so you don’t notice any flickering.
>On the other hand, broadcast engineers need to be able to accurately monitor and evaluate those individual interlaced scanlines. They need to be able to view them without them overlapping each other. To do that with zero overlap, you need a TVL count of about 800 or higher. Of course this makes the flickering nature of interlaced video extremely apparent. That’s why HR tubes are not market towards consumers.
>So the important question here, is how sharp do you want your scanlines to be when you play your retro games? Do you like the scanline effect at all? Some people hate it. If you’re one of those people, you might be better off buying a consumer TV that has component inputs, or modding a consumer TV for RGB input.
TL;DR: the higher the TVL count, the sharper your scanlines are going to be.

>>
>>12722817
Yeah you're right. When people say scanlines they usually erroneously refer to the gaps between scanlines.
>>
>>12722985
God the right one looks so ugly. Why do you want black streaks running across half the screen? That's not even what most people's TVs looked like back in the day.
>>
>>12723052
>Why do you want black streaks running across half the screen? That's not even what most people's TVs looked like back in the day.
If you were used to arcade displays, those were usually more scanline heavy. I know this is /vr/ and you like to pretend the entirety of the retro experience was the NES but there was a variety of display choices depending on choice of platform back then.
>>
>>12722701
They are there. Also 480I gives you less of a gap since it's using more lines.
>>
>>12722808
>Even then, 240p only has visible gaps between the scanlines on aperture grille sets.
kek what
>>
>>12722808
>Moire patterns aren't scanlines
Correct. But they are literally caused by scanlines. So if you can see a moire pattern, you can see scanlines.

You dumb fuckin' dummy.
>>

>>
>>12723291
>>I don't know how to set up CRT shaders so I'll hate on them
CRT shaders don't replicate CRTs
>>
>>12723437
You better hope that they do at some point because they don't make real CRTs or spare parts for them anymore.
>>
>>12723448
Display technology becoming as good as CRTs in 20 years time is more likely than filters catching up
>>
>>12723458
At a cost greater than real CRTs were, at a fraction of the longevity.
You think OLED displays will be cheap before your hair turns grey, and that they'll last as long as the CRT from 40 years ago that I still have as a family heirloom?
We need all the options we can get.
>>
>>12723103
Yeah, you wouldn't see it on regular consumer sets.
>>
>>12722701
Right there in the picture. See an eye doctor.
>>
>>12722806
all over the fucking picture?
this thread is gaslighting me
>>
>>12722980
>>12722985
This is why I ended up using my real CRTs less and less and went to shaders on a 4k monitor. Because I can dial in the look per game to type of CRT that flatters it best.
>>
>>12722701
Yeah, shaders tend to exagerrate the scan line effect greatly for zoomers who never had CRT's. Emulation + modern display is still superior though.

>>12722806
Here you can see the mask, both the effect were far more subtle than most shaders would have you believe. Even bilinear filtering makes games look far shittier than I remember and, they did not blur that much at all and I was using composite up to the Xbox 360 era.

>Not using raw pixels and integer scale for the highest level of definition and fidelity
>>
>>12723576
>fidelity
Fidelity comes from Fidel, Latin for faithful. Therefore raw pixels are the most unfaithful to the hobby.
>>
>>12722701
Scanlines shouldn't appear, it's a calibration issue with your screen if they do.
>>
>>12722701

>>
>>12723584
But consoles output in raw pixels (with emulation you have the best native output too). Scanlines, blurring and all that are artifacts of a CRT.

>Inb4 the game was "meant" to run on a CRT
That was the commercially available display at the time.

>>
>>12723576
raw pixels are not the highest level of definition It's actually the very lowest. You are stripping away layers of shadows, details, and colors.
>>
>>12723628
>But consoles output in raw pixels
No, they do not. They output in analog video signals that don't even have pixels at all.
> Scanlines, blurring and all that are artifacts of a CRT.
These are not artifacts, they are part of the game's intended presentation.
>>
>>12723462
OLEDs are cheap
>>
The ideal TVL sits between 500-600. Not low enough to make it look like you're gaming through a barbecue grill, not high enough to be marred by thick as fuck scanlines.

For me, it's playing videogames. I'll leave the postprocessing for the shaderfags.

picrel is an accurate representation of a bad magazine picture I made in 2 seconds, so I'm sure you guys can manage it. I'll pay you a janny's pence.

Console cannot put out anything higher than it's native resolution. Anything else is either a CRT effect that lowers the image quality or an AI upscale.
