Why didn't /vr/ say Eve Burst Error and Desire are top tier?
>>12722852Desire and Eve Burst Error both had an official translation released for PC in 1999. Eve has since been re-released digitally exclusively via the MangaGamer website, but Desire hasn't had such luck.Did anyone actually buy english-translated VNs back in the day? Did you have to buy them online or did your local stores stock games like this?
>>12722873Isn’t the official translation of EBE working designs tier?
>>12722873I read on assemblergames years ago that apparently the English localisation of Desire is miles better than the original script, which seemed like a bold claim. I think it was that Ed_Oscuro guy who said it, post was from around 2004.
>Game has PC-9821 CD version complete with voice acting.>Fan translators base their project on PC-9801 floppy disk version. Both the patches for DESIRE and Xenon are like this. Are CD based PC-98 games impossible to hack?
>>12722926I'm currently playing the CD version of Xenon, and there are no subtitles for any of the voice lines. I'm sure that's the main problem.
>>12722978How is the voice acting? I played YU-NO with the mod that adds the voice lines from the Saturn port. The voice acting in that game is so good anyone would be remiss to play the game without it. I want to play Xenon, but I'm reluctant to play a version without voice acting in case it's a similar situation.
>>12722978As I recall, the Windows port does show text for all lines, voiced or notI remember there being some reason some people preferred the PC-98 version; I'm gonna guess FM synth? Think the Win port may be MIDI-only for the music>>12724094Xenon casts includes Koorogi SatomiI love her voice so much
>>12724094It’s been a while since I played YU-NO, but Xenon's voice acting holds up just as well, aside from one specific character. The only issue is the dogshit audio quality. But honestly, it's hard to be too harsh considering this was the very dawn of voice acting in VNs.>>12724276I don't know anything about the Windows port, but if it really only uses MIDI for music, I wouldn't even bother with it. Experiencing Ryu Umemoto's PC-98 FM synth sound is practically half the reason to play these games.
Took me a little because apparently Windows 11 changed how default midi device selection works yet again, but have confirmed Xenon Windows port uses MIDI only.Same with the original EVE and DESIRE windows ports. Only exception is music that's part of FMVs.Unlike the other two, EVE has two settings, "FM synthesizer" (FMシンセサイザ) and "GM compatible synthesizer" (GM互換シンセサイザ) -- but they both send MIDI data, just different-sounding. The manual doesn't have any details. Maybe FM is Roland GS? Could be Yamaha XG I guess. If I had one of the more expensive Sound Canvas's with the LCD display I suppose it'd tell me. I assume you can check that with the Windows Sound Canvas software synths these days.
>>12724690Here's the english manual for Eve that comes with the MangaGamer digital re-release. According to it FM is SB16, while GM is AWE32. Of course it might just be the translators pulling this out of their ass.
>>12724839Ah that's plausible, hadn't thought of them targeting basic PC soundcards
At least they got much better-looking remasters than YU-NO.
