Seems like the right time to talk about this little gem, anyone else played it?

It's got really unique movement with the Tachikoma sliding up walls and the strafing.
Currently stuck on the 2nd stage boss bc I suck
>>
I got it back in the day because I liked tank police and heard this was related.

Omg did I ever luck out. That was the funest fucking game, and has become the ultimate stoner game in my eyes. You can be so chill and just vibe to the game.

Love it. Also isn't it a fuchikoma in the PSX game?
>>
>>12722986
If I got this as a kid I would imagine you'd be playing as Major (she's the only one on the cover after all) and be sorely dissapointed that you're just the comedic relief robot.
>>
>>12723070
>isnt it a fuchikoma
a tachikoma is just a legally distinct fuchikoma
but yes, they used the fuchi name in the PS game
>>
protip: overclock the cpu in the emulator settings when playing this game

your welcome
>>
Yeah it's a great, it's just too damn short. It's so good I'd want more of it, especially city exploration levels.

Fun fact: the game uses a very small resolution, it's 256*240 stretched to 320*240; but effectively it's even less than that because of the black bars at the bottom and right side, it's effectively only 248*216, which is how it achieves such a smooth framerate.

It's not the lowest resolution on PSX that I know of though, for instance Hexen is 256*220 but the hud is 40 pixels tall. Kinda cheating not counting the hud but that would make it effectively lower than GitS.
>>
>>12723090
you didnt beat the game
>>
>>12723289
your right, I beat a better game that ran at a solid 60fps at all times with no slowdown at any point

Pretty sure watching this intro as a kid changed the course of my life.
The visuals, the insane animation on the water and carpet, the fucking music from Takkyu Ishino holy shit.
God damn do I love Takkyu Ishino's music

I had to wait 5 years to watch the full movie and then SACS came out and was the best cartoon ever.
I'm so happy the new series turns out to be peak as well. I'm feeling like a kid again.

Overblood 2 goes probably even lower and has a lovely 16.7fps.
Great game on emulator though.

Of course. Masamune Shirow properties were really big back then. From Black Magic 66, to Appleseed, to Dominion: Tank Police, it was so exciting to see his newest work in the comic shops. So the game based on the property was one of those landmark titles which propped up the original Playstation.

Nice collection
I'm working my way through the new printing of the original manga

I like that it's short, mission variety is good, and while it isn't an on-rail shooter (although it has a few on-rail levels), it has that arcade feel so it being more bloated would make the game less tight in my opinion.
It's always a good time to beat it in one sitting and trying to do it without dying once.
Also, the training mode provided a lot of hours of fun if you try to get good time score.
>>
>>12722986
The 2nd stage boss has a bombing attack that it does after the lasers, you need to get away from him when he launches those.
At first I was also dying to that boss a lot as I wasn't noticing these bombs took so much HP but they drain you pretty quick

>>12723738
Oh yeah, for that I'd say the non-canon redhead Leona Ozaki from the Dominion OVAs is pretty sexy. The athletic type is where Shirow shines in designing female characters.

>>12724393
I have the old collected volumes and most of the original Dark Horse 32-page comics of the day. Do not fret, as the artist/writer intends GitS for a sort of tales and interpretations based around the universe rather than some sort of continuous linear story.

>>
>>12723083
Yeah, pretty much. Oni from 2001 was the closest we ever got to a Motoko game.
>>
>>12723083
I mean even if you did play as the major, you'd still be playing as her controlling a fuchikoma.
IMO Exact did the right call with centering gameplay on the fuchikoma. Humanoid on-foot gameplay would be generic and boring compared to wall/ceiling fast climbing
>>
>>12725219
>Humanoid on-foot gameplay would be generic and boring
Not in 1997, between Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid, soon after the release of the highly-acclaimed 1995 GITS movie that inspired the Matrix. You know, the movie that Fuchikomas had no relevancy in.

Like, come on, man. Get real.
>>
>>12725236
Maybe if you wanted a GITS survival horror or stealth game but I personally prefer the exhilarating Fuchikoma action.
You do have a point with the movie though. It was a weird decision to base the game on the manga instead. But that's not a bad thing.
We could have gotten an OK third person human shooter, with grainy FMVs taken from the movie... would have been great at the time because of the tie-in, but nowadays we can appreciate the original Fuchikoma gameplay and the original Production IG cutscenes with manga art direction
>>
>>12725238
Jumping Flash and Geograph Seal were more fun to be honest.
Look at Tekken 3's Tekken Force mode, with all the special moves and route choices of a classic beat 'em up. Imagine that with Motoko and Batou in a Bladerunner backdrop that only the PSX can do justice. You could even have Fuchikoma missions sprinkled in for variety, but GITS is all about the cyborgs.
>>
>>12725251
>Jumping Flash and Geograph Seal were more fun to be honest
Same developers, similar, but not the same. JF focused on its triple jump. GITS focused on dashin on all directions and wall/ceiling climbing and strafing (also can't strafe in JF)
>Tekken
Eh.
No, I'm happy with the unique Fuchikoma gameplay.

That might be what you want

So, just to settle this once and for all: the MC (the Rookie) is NOT Togusa, despite the confusion led by the localization booklet. There's several instances during cutscenes where Togusa is there and they explicitly talk to the rookie, who is another character. Basically you never see the MC, it's supposed to be your own self-insert. You only see the fuchikoma.
Also, wow, did anyone see speedruns of this game? So cool, should be a more popular game for speedrunners. Surprised it was never on any speedrunning event, but maybe it's better that way.

You do technically play as Motoko in this game, just not in direct combat.
I wanna punch people in the face as Batou, though.
>>
>>12725351
No, Motoko gives you orders and is your boss. Ser the post above yours, the idea of this game is that (You) are a new member of Motoko's team.

For the early 3D era it was probably the smarter choice. But it really reminds me of how lame it was that the first Matrix game you never got to play as Neo.
>>
>>12725251
>>12726065
The PS2 game has on-foot Major missions AND Tachikoma missions too.
Yet more people remember the PS1 game.
Even if they tried to imitate the Fuchikoma controls on the PS2 game with the Tachikoma, it wasn't the same developers and it showed.
>>
>>12725169
There's Cavia's GiTS TPS for the PS2. You can play as Makoto from SAC (I don't remember if it's 1st or 2nd Gig Makoto but I know that it tied in with the anime when it was airing in the early 2000s) in the game. It's pretty good if short. Thankfully it has multiplayer to keep the fun going. Along with Nier Replicant/Gestalt (not retro), it's probably the only other real highlight of their catalog.

>>12726080
My guess as to why people remember the PS1 game more is because the PS1 game is more flashy compared to the SAC-based PS2 game. hat's not to say either is bad, but if someone showed me a game with an intro like this it'd stick in my mind for a lot longer that Cavia's game.
>>
>>12726361
I simply think the Tachikoma missions just aren't as fun as the PS1 game, controls as well. It's not bad but something is lacking

As you can see, the ticket to seeing GitS in the theater back then is there, kept it with the pack of cards and magnets they gave out to seeing it there. Movies pretty much was out escape in the recession era.

>>12724776
One of the more recent animations brings back more of Shirow's old style in animated form. It is more lighthearted portrayal of Major Motoko Kusanagi, which was pretty beautiful in a lot of interpretations.

>>12725131
I think that just coincided with the artist getting older and the conversion to more digital art. I sort of noticed the changeover around Manmachine Interface 2.
>>
>>12723089
Just confess that you're a SAC tourist, anon. There's no shame in that.
>>
Chronologically, where in the story does the PS1 game take place?
