Why does Halo get so much hate here?

Just finished my first playthrough. The gameplay is just addicting and they got a perfect balance going with it. Every weapon is viable on Legendary. The pacing is also good so you're constantly moving level to level with different enemy encounters and setups for the player to overcome. It's very much one of the best action games of all time because of how it combines its gameplay and level/enemy design.

Great controls, top tier sound design and music, voice acting, writing, cinematic cutscenes with amazing storyboards.

i've written about why Halo sucks for years but it's a waste of time because these threads are clearly made by some schizo that's obsessed with Quake for some reason

I tried to play it a few years back but it just felt like a primitive version of modern FPSs, which I don't really like either. On the other hand I love classic Doom, which still feels completely different from any other FPS not based on its engine. Halo just has the misfortune of being influential in a way that eventually diminished its strengths.
I'm not saying it's a bad game since I haven't played it all the way through, just saying what put me off of actually doing that and I imagine it's the same for a lot of other people.

How do you love classic Doom but find Halo is just like any modern FPS?
>>
>>12726649
With Doom the gameplay is bound to its limitations. Fix/change those limitations and it would play more like later shooters, but you can't or else it wouldn't be the same game.
Halo feels like it could be dropped into a modern FPS engine and still be more or less the same game, just with more refined controls and everything else. But in its original form it just feels like a less refined version of that, so why not just play later FPSs at that point?
>>
>>12726656
There are countless boomer shooters being made today on modern engines, what are you talking about? Hell, there's Halo mods FOR Doom.

Hilarious how you trying to flip it. Calling PC chads retards even.

The truth is it's nintendies and psoys hating on Halo. We had counter strike etc.
>>
>>12726659
I don't see how that relates to my point, which is that Doom's limitations could not be refined and maintain the same gameplay, while Halo's could and this gives people less reason to play it over the games that eventually did everything it did but better.

Half of these points are completely disingenuous. I've never seen somebody say Halo has bad art or poor enemy design.

>Why does Halo get so much hate here?
No one hates the substance of the game. Halo was a cultural movement that a lot of people have disdain for. It's an icon of the "MLG 420 No Scope Mountain Dew Smoke Weed ErryDay Dudebro Gaming" movement. I look back on that movement fondly but a lot of people resent it because they were excluded from it or missed out. It was a bit wiggery but it was the last gasp of white culture before everything became homogenized

Halo is more than just a game. It's a litmus test for your stance on dudebro fratboy culture and all of the baggage associated with that.

CS represents slavshits and russians playing on potatoes. Not nearly as culturally relevant in the west as halo was

CS was always more popular than Halo in the west kek. Hell even Goldeneye outsold the original Halo.
>>

you're moving the goalposts

"Approximate ranking by copies sold
Halo 3 — ~14–15 million
Halo: Reach — ~9–10 million
Halo 4 — ~9–10 million
Halo 2 — ~8.5–9 million
Halo: Combat Evolved — ~6–7 million"
>>
>>12727239
>you're moving the goalposts
So the PCfats writing apocalyptics about Halo in 2001 were actually talking about Halo Reach, a game that wouldn't come out for another 9 years? Never mind that Counter-Strike outsold each of those games.

>>12727243

yes they're seething about the vibes from halo 2 and 3 and even present day

NTA but shooters simply don't have what it takes to be a 10/10 game. The act of shooting as the primary mechanic is too repetitive and frankly dull to carry the gameplay beyond a 7/10. Clicking on heads a dozen times then walking to the next combat zone where *gasp* you get to click on another 20 heads doesn't offer enough variety or engagement. Some interesting movement options could elevate this by giving positioning a more dynamic role (and tbf the vehicles in Halo kinda try to do this) but instead the game encourages you to play whack-a-mole by alternating between popping headshots and sitting behind cover waiting for shields to recharge. I think this is why doomfags like to shit on Halo, because it's more engaging to always be moving at high speed while shooting than it is to poke out of cover, get your shots in, then go back to your safe space. To the devs' credit, I think they realized this and made the enemies have slow moving projectiles you could potentially dodge, but why bother with the risk of taking 20 seconds to respawn when you can just park your spartan ass behind a rock for 10 seconds?
IMO Halo gets hard carried by non-gameplay elements like music and lore, which isn't really a bad thing because those can add a lot to the "experience" of a game. There are a lot of beloved classics that have dogshit gameplay but otherwise create a unique and fun experience that can only exist in a game. It's telling that there are a million Halo clones that play similarly yet get dumpster reviews because they don't have a compelling story or as good of an atmosphere.

tl;dr shooting alone isn't a very fun mechanic but the feeling of being in a scifi warzone with cool alien weapons and uncovering ancient mysteries can make up for it
>>
>>12727192
>wiggery
>white culture
Something's not adding up here. Yes technically it is white culture, but only to the extent of whites trying their hardest to become niggers. Hence the term wigger.
>>
>>12727925
>why bother with the risk of taking 20 seconds to respawn when you can just park your spartan ass behind a rock for 10 seconds?
Because it isn't fun? You control the buttons you press, and the dominant strategy in every game is to have fun. You're really arguing in bad faith if you intentionally choose to play the game in a way you don't enjoy.
>>
>>12728598
It may be more fun but it's more risky, thus players will optimize the fun out of it.
>bad faith
Fuck off, every single time someone disagrees with anyone I hear this retarded phrase. No, it's not bad faith, it's bad game design. Look at your own webm. How many tries did it take you to line up the grenade just right so the shotgun lands right in your hands? THAT is a bad faith argument, acting like that is normal gameplay and not highly practiced and choreographed over several hours of attempts.
>>
>>12728653
>No, it's not bad faith, it's bad game design
The game being fun and you intentionally playing it in a way you don't find fun isn't bad game design, that's literally the definition of bad faith if you know there is a more enjoyable experience to be had yet double down on something you know you dislike. What am I meant to conclude other than a desire to not be seen as somebody who likes Halo?
>How many tries did it take you to line up the grenade just right so the shotgun lands right in your hands?
Nade launching is a core part of the Halo CE experience and longtime players do it consistently lol. The physics in this game are generous enough to make it repeatable.
>>
>>12728661
Why the fuck would I randomly decide to play in an unfun way in arbitrary games? The design of the game encourages the player to play in an unfun way and you can only do the things in your webm if you grind out the same encounter over and over to find a cheese strat against the AI that looks flashy enough to show online.
>>
>>12728670
>Why the fuck would I randomly decide to play in an unfun way in arbitrary games?
Many people on /vr/ love to posture as having superior taste.
>The design of the game encourages
The only thing any game encourages you to do once you press Start is to play it. Millions of people around the world chose to have fun with Halo and nobody is at fault for the decision to covershoot than the player choosing to covershoot. Besides, I could make a subjective argument about literally any game, claiming that from my perspective, it "encouraged" me to play it in a profoundly unenjoyable way; it's such an arbitrary line of thinking, and above all irrational because my primary intention when playing video games is to enjoy them.
>>
>>12728670
>cheese strat
Also, since when is movement and dodging a cheese strat? That's how you're meant to play 99% of shooters, and 99% of action games for that matter; the only cheese strat I see is slowly picking enemies off at a distance as you peek out of cover once every 20 seconds, as you recommended.

Doom maps are covered in healing items, I don't see how that's any different from Halo's shields.
