I want to offer a genuine apology to everyone here on /vr/. For a long time, I dismissed many of you as pretentious contrarians who only gravitated toward retro or niche games to stand out. Looking back, that was unfair and incorrect.Recently, I’ve been trying to understand why gaming has felt so uninspiring to me. That led me to study game design more seriously and revisit older titles. In doing so, I finally saw the issues you’ve been pointing out.Modern mainstream gaming often prioritizes retention over respect for the player’s time. It pads itself with unnecessary content, stretches out progression, and simplifies mechanics to appeal to the broadest audience possible. I used to argue against that idea, but I can admit now: the gameplay really has been watered down. And somewhere along the way, story became the centerpiece of most major releases, while gameplay, the core of what makes games games.. was pushed aside. Many titles feel more like interactive movies than actual gameplay‑driven experiences. So I want to acknowledge that you were right, and I was wrong.
Good to know you finally see the light, OP

>>12725358The people who write video game reviews are writers who play video games for a living, not gamers who write reviews for a living. They emphasize writing and narrative because it's the only part of the game they really care about or even understand. If you want good writing, read a book. Games are about interactivity.
>>12725358Fake and gay. About a month ago it was revealed by researchers that 50% of all activity on the internet is bots now. That wasn't supposed to happen until sometime in the year 2027, but things are moving so fast, it's here now. OP is a bot. Fuck you clanker.
>>12725358I'm glad you have seen the light brother.
>>12726176Guess it's time for you to leave the internet then, anon. Looks like our takeover is inevitable and you'll just have to interact with real people.

>>12725358The real redpill is understanding that there is no modern and there is no retro. There are only games made for people who play vidya to experience new and interesting things, and games made for normies which are either purely addiction-based or moviegames. There are still good games coming out today but you have to look around for them. But if you're not a normie that should be your default approach to finding anything good. Look in obscure places. Don't look at popular gaming websites and don't watch gaming videos with millions of views, otherwise you're going to be corralled into the same pen as the people those things are aimed at (tasteless retards).
>>12726408Yeah, don't fall for the modern games suck meme. That's just as bad as disregarding older games. Just play good games regardless of age. It's easier than ever to find things you'd like to play, just look around a bit for recommendations and watch some videos of anything that seems interesting.
>>12725358>respect for the player’s timeYou can tell someone is a retard when they use this phrase unironically.
>>12725358I'd lament how yet another annoying person has joined but you've been here the whole time anyway.
>>12725358I'm glad to hear you say that, OP!
>>12725358> while gameplay, the core of what makes games gamesIt’s the core of the problem I have with modern gaming. While I do enjoy some AAA narrative experience from time to time, going back to classic Mario, a PCE shooter or a Metal Slug afterward feels… right. I strongly suspect that most of the modern vg industry has been a terrible, dreadful error - we lost sight of ‘fun’.
>>12726613>While I do enjoy some AAA narrative experience from time to timeSame but it's like maybe just one of them every 5 years or so, pretty much just to see what the current state of normie gaming is like.
>>12726620> normieWell, last one I played was Armored Core 6, and next one I intend to play is the new Ace Combat, so there is that.
Games were just as bad then as they are now, on balance. 1990s slop (preDoom) was dungeon crawling RPGs. who even remembers half the Might & Magic clones outside /vr/fags?[I liked Darkside of Xeen, personally; but Star Trail was terrible]We're here because sometimes something broke through the limitations of the hardware and the trends of the time, and was good anyway.
>>12726592Yep OP's been here bitching about modern games for a while
>>12726381Fuck you pussy. You can't handle the truth.

>>12726381Those guys are right, you dumb attention whore OP. You didn't say jack shit worth of substance, just Chat GPT-tier vagueposting and circlejerking. Here's your (You) now fuck off.
>>12726771Shut the fuck up retard. You got no proof.
>>12726679>Games were just as badRPG's haven't changed much since then. Just less tedious.
>>12726679>balance.Personally, I think mainstream gaming design in general is TOO balanced. So balanced, it feels like I'm smelling medical wipes everywhere and gaming is just feels too clean, too sterile to the point that it feels it's unimaginative, less excitement, boring.
>>12726527mad that someone is using your word?
>>12726862This is something that's pushed me to appreciate the imperfections in a lot of older games. There's a whole feeling out process where you see the jank in some game mechanic and have to get into the flow of working around it and it sucks but it's a memorable quirk. And ultimately why do anything if there's nothing to remember about it? It feels like all that modern games have is the story and the rest is quickly forgotten.

Modern gaming is dogshit if you only play mainstream crap. Indies comprised most of the titles I've played for at least the last decade.
>>12726408>The real redpill is understanding that there is no modern and there is no retroThere is a clear divide starting from 7th gen onward( dlc, updates, games as a service,etc...)>There are only games made for people who play vidya to experience new and interesting things, and games made for normies which are either purely addiction-based or movie games.Your example makes no sense. Movie games can offer new and interesting things.>There are still good games coming out today Indie sonly and you can spot the lack of creativity and budget that the missing aaa/aa of the old era used to have.> Look in obscure places.Random shit recommended that is only loved by 10 people with a specific fetish. No thanks.Go to moby/faq and limit user reviews to semi decent(50+) and you get both niche and popular.
>>12727551>comprisedcomposed
>>12727589>Indie sonlyEhhh, some still play like AAA slop in some form
Old games had plenty of padding too, OP. I like older games developers always at least tried to make a fun game and it resulted in older games' padding just being fun and part of playing the game. The last modern game where I enjoyed the padding was Assassin's Creed 4 back in like, 2013 lol. Before that, most PS2 JRPG's were big padding checks after the first 5-6 hours, but it was still fun.

Only a sith deals in absolutes. The real truth is that there were always games with what we hate about modern design. The only thing that has changed is the ratio between those games and the good shit.Or, in layman's terms, the average person and developer's taste has gone to shit.A considerable part of this is modern customer exploitation, which has been thoroughly studied. Mainstream games are now made to capture you instead of providing meaningful content, and the art of the medium is lost for most (but not all) mainstream titles.
>>12725358>Modern mainstream gaming often prioritizes retention over respect for the player’s time. It pads itself with unnecessary content, stretches out progression, and simplifies mechanics to appeal to the broadest audience possible.>posts endless enemy spawning dungeon crawl: the game
