I was surprised recently to learn that Ice Climber is pretty well regarded by Japanese fans. I'm wondering what other games there are that are just popular in one specific region and not generally. Dragon Quest comes to mind, with its popularity in Japan completely eclipsing its popularity everywhere else. I think the KoF games were bigger than Street Fighter solely in Latin America too, right?
>>12726104Sega as a whole was only popular in Europe
>>12726106Ah right, the entire Sega Master System counts. Maybe the Genesis and Saturn both as well.
>>12726104I believe Bloody Roar 2 is popular in vietnam as most footage is from there. Also kof97 is the most popular kof in china whereas it's 2002 down here in South America, especially that shitty magic plus II romhack for whatever reason. Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition is also a south american/turkish classic and the SF2 Hyper Fighting lobby on fightcade mostly has australian players which is a bummer since its much better than CE
>>12726104>>12726127These games are also popular in regions where Famiclones were popular, south america, eastern europe/russia, asia.In the early 90s, Famiclone production exploded and 32/64 in 1 carts were everywhere, and all of them included the classic early titles like Ice Climber, Tennis, Baseball, Pinball, Popeye and all those other games known as "black box" in the US.Also 3rd party games, besides Battle City, that were also on multicarts and were popular: Circus CharlieStar ForceExerionTwin BeeAntartic AdventurePooyanField Combat
>>12726106The Master System was so insanely popular in Brasil that it even had exclusive games.
>>12726106
>>12726104Wizardry saga is for some reason far more loved in Japan than in America.
>Ice ClimberWtf what is there to like about it? It plays like shit
>>12726320It's finicky but mostly by comparison to what came later. It was an early Famicom game that preceded Super Mario Bros. and Vs. Ice Climber was allegedly pretty big in arcades. They seem to usually rank it pretty high among Famicom games. See:http://blog.hardcoregaming101.net/2012/02/top-100-famicom-games-as-voted-by.html
>>12726320Controls are pixel-perfect and very precise. It just requires skill.
>>12726104I think Ice Climber was pretty well regarded in Nordic countries too. There was a NES Ice Climber bundle, so it came with the console for many who bought that, and it was a fun little game for two players.
>>12726354well, playing ice climber in a northern icy place makes sense.
>>12726354Thats pretty cool, not many games get the honor of being a pack-in and even rarer when its not something Mario related.
>>12726539What do you mean? There's lots of non-mario bundles. But yeah, seeing a pre-SMB game getting a bundle is neat.Ice climber is quite underrated nowadays, great game and great co-op. It does require a lot of patience and getting good though. Also, not sure but the bonus stage music might be the first time jazz music was used in video games?
Really makes their inclusion in Smash seem a little less random, damn.
Virtua Fighter 2 was massive in Japan but nowhere else.
TIL there are glue sniffers out there that doesn't like Ice Climber.
>>12726106>>12726243Master System in Brasil is a fucking bizarre situation because it still is getting quasi-official rereleases from Tec-Toy there. It's popularity is slowing down with every passing year but still - there's a lot of poor households there and these cheap Master System clones are pretty valid gaming machines if nothing else is available, right?

Sonic seems to be more well known and loved in the USA and the rest of the world than in Japan but more in the USA Dragon Quest is much bigger in Japan than Final Fantasy Fire Emblem is bigger in Japan and Zelda not so much
>>12726106the Genesis did good sales numbers in the USA almost equal to the SNES. All their other consoles did poorly though
>>12726110>SaturnDefinitely the Saturn. Tomb Raider was a timed Saturn exclusive in Europe. Most people everywhere else think of her as a PSX mascot.
>>12727484>her*Lara Croft
>>12726106>Sega as a whole was only popular in EuropeYou probably mean western Europe and britain
>>12727484I've read that pic related was the system seller of the Saturn in Portugal during a few years, I guess 1996 and 1997.Like most people in portugal who had a 5th gen console had a Saturn and not PS1 because of DBZ The Legend, which was officially released there. Can't blame them, I also loved playing this game back then, though I had it on ps1 (bootleg)
>>12726104What region is Urban Champion popular in? Because why Nintendo keeps porting that crappy game continues to elude me.
>>12727497Yeah, I never even saw a Mega Drive until a saw a random used one for sale in the early 2000s, and nobody had even heard of the Master System.
>>12727484What I'd meant was Genesis was biggest in the US, and Saturn biggest in Japan, not necessarily that they were all big in Europe.
>>12726104For the longest, visual novels were mostly popular in Japan to me. You can find a lot of them there, but recently the genre is finally catching up outside of Japan thanks to the efforts of Telltale Games. There's now a lot more around, and a lot that I do like, but still mostly a genre not as enjoyed around here. I figured game trailers that don't feature any sort of shooting is not interesting to most in my area.
>>12728168Wasn't Sakura Wars popular in Russia? Also, 3DO was popular in Russia too iirc, because of Star Control I think it was?
>>12726334Damn the guy who wrote this list sounds fucking miserable
>>12728178Sakura Wars 1 and 2 were oficially translated to Russian, yes. Also Sakura Wars 3 and 4 had Chinese versions.
>>12727125I thought it was called the sega system though.
>>12726334>no.10 being that horrible single-screen title with the POW blockWhat a faggot.
