Stanley Ipkiss was a misanthropic asshole who gets killed off very early on and then Mitch Kellaway becomes the main character with The Mask for most of the original comic's run. For the movie they made Ipkiss a more empathetic character and basically gave him most of Kellaway's role and motive as a "superhero."
