What was it like to experience this in the 90s? Did people realize what they had or was it just another quirky videogame at the time.
It started wowing people even from low quality screenshots on magazines. There was a lot of hype around it all throughout late 93 and 1994.When it finally came out and not just the graphics but also gameplay/game design and music were also top notch it cemented is position as an all time classic
Nobody had anything with DKC1 it was generic as fuck and is one of the most overrated 16 but games ever. It was just a graphical showpiece. 2 on the other hand actually was good and it and Yoshi's Island had a genuine impact on platformer design.

the marketing tape helped alot. i know i wouldn'tve given it a chance otherwise just on pics
>>12726530It was like Mario with apes
It was bananas.
>>12726530I was just 12 at the time but yeah it was obvious that it was a top tier franchise, on par with Mario and Sonic
>>12726530Impressive visuals, but really quickly I realized how shallow the game was. And all the early PS1 3D games that followed were pretty much the same.
What's with all these template threads?
There was no time to appreciate it because N64 was right around the corner.
>>12726530This is a stupid question
>>12726530It was pretty insane. Hordes of normalfags who weren't playing videogames or hadn't since the NES days got a SNES only to play DKC.
>>12726530from my memory people just thought it was another generic platformer. Sega owners saw it as Aladdin clone. I just played it like any other platformer as in I really enjoyed it like I would any other platformer, nothing special felt about it back then
It was good but the Sequels on the Snes were better
>>12726530>implying DKC is good
>>12727152I've always thought Vectorman was the more impressive showpiece, seeing as how that game abused the Genesis' Shadow/Highlight modes to their fullest potential. Haven't really played the second one, but I've heard it's quite underwhelming.
