I recently bought a 27" Sony Trinitron kv-27s22 as my 1st step into retro gaming, but now need to figure out how to play retro games on it. Is buying original hardware still considered the best route? Or is modding a Nintendo Wii just as good? Im mainly interested in 8/16 bit era games, but will dabble in N64/PS1 on occasion. Dont care about gaming beyond the 90s really
>>12726637Composite only.>>12726637>Or is modding a Nintendo Wii just as good?Yes actually.
Modded Wii is so early 2010's. We're all about MiSTer now.
>>12726690Buy an ad.
>>12726646I plan on modding it for SCART, svideo, and component. Is there any reason to use composite at all? I heard genesis games benefit from dithering but dont know how true that is.Also, isnt Wii emulation of retro consoles much less accurate then real hardware? A wii is appealing because of how cheap it is, but idk if i can deal with using the shtty wii remote to play games. The genesis controller especialy is my favorite. But playing hundreds of dollars for OG consoles then $200 each for the everdrives also kinda sucks......>>12726690I tried looking online but they all seem sold out. Is MISTer just as accurate as hardware? I also care about using the OG controllers too.
With that CRT you'll be limited to using composite. This is still really fine and will deliver an excellent image from your snes.. there are ways to mod those trinitrons to accept rgb input over scart but that quote and involved mod to your CRT. Just play the snes on composite. Thats still great. Enjoy your 60hz bliss.
>>12726692>Is there any reason to use composite at all?8/16-bit games were designed around the blurring you get with RF and composite. Transparencies and other graphical effects won't look right in some games without it. The pixels will look clearer but that's the trade off.
>>12726692>I tried looking online but they all seem sold out.The DE10-Nano is always in stock on Terasic, there's always people selling pre-made kits for insane markups on ebay.>Is MISTer just as accurate as hardware? Most cores are mature enough to be indistinguishable from the original console. It's definitely an expensive upfront cost, but still a fraction of the price of buying all the consoles, arcade machines and computers it supports individually.
Ok I FOMO'd and bought this Genesis model 1. Expensive as shit but it looks very clean and the guy claimed to restore it and change capacitors or whatever. How badly did I fuck up? I think this will be my 1st and last console purchase tho. Once I add in the cost of an everdrive im close to $400 just to play Sega games! If I buy the other consoles from this era then I can easily see myself spending over $1000. I think at this point a MISTer or Wii might make more sense, but im retarded and the MISTer looks too complex for my penis-brain. And the Wii seems to have emulators stuck in 2007, SNES probably plays like ASS on it. >>12726697Then why do people online seem to always suck components dick. /Fag/gots told me to not even waste time playing on a CRT if it doesnt have have component/S-video. Which is why im modding this Sony sinceit seems easy to add.
Just learned about SNES blurriness, now I have to go hunting for a 1CHIP. Ugh....
>>12726692Modding a wii is the ghetto budget way to emulate to crt. It's just not accurate or even fast and it has a slight noticeable amount of input lag. For mister, if you want to buy it prebuilt, misteraddons restocks every few months. I like their build with analog pro board because you can use one of their saturn style din-10 cables for video output and it outputs composite, s-video component or rgb, you just have to change the ini file. No external converters required except for RF. I prefer composite except for gen 6 consoles. Mister also allows for 100% lagless original controller use via SNAC adapter. Reflex adapt or daemonbyte are also extremely good/low lag and offer more flexibility.>>12726712Mister is not hard. AI will almost always give accurate instructions on setting up or tweaking anything because there's alot of online documentation for it to feed off of. I don't advise going original hardware unless you have decent money to sink on flash carts, mods if you want them and refurbishment/recaps and shit. Mister looks indistinguishable from the real ones and it's far cheaper overall. I don't like component or RGB for retro. it looks unnaturally saturated and the pixel art looks rough and chunky. S-video is tolerable in some cases. Ignore all of the dipshits online who parrot each other and form your own opinion. Since mister has all the outputs you can try them all as long as your tv supports them.
>>12726794>Mister looks indistinguishable from the real ones and it's far cheaper overall.I wish, but no, it's emulation at the end of the day. With better input lag that a Windows PC, but emulation. GBA core is way less accurate than mGBA. I just can't trust it and there is a lot of examples.https://youtu.be/TkLAy5bi2Ks?t=4155
>>12726926There's two GBA cores and neither of them have that issue on their latest versions. When was the last time they updated their MiSTer?
>>12726940Nta but why would they need to update it if it's already supposed to perfectly replicate the hardware?
>>12726947In a perfect world software and hardware emulation would be 100% recreations, the reality is more like 99% with some edge cases after decades of development and bug reports.
>>12726690This unironically
>>12726940>John Linneman from Digital Foundry>MLiG, premier retro guys on the internet>the-they didn't update the core!sureLook, I have a real GBA, a real Game Boy Player with GBI, a DS with a GBA slot, and a real 3DS with actual GBA hardware inside. mGBA is **ABSOLUTELY UNUSABLE** for me. The standalone version is incredibly laggy, and even with the best RetroArch settings on a good PC, it's still unusable for games like Rhythm Tengoku. The timing just isn't right. I also don't trust a MiSTer core to fix this. I can play the game just fine on a DS or 3DS, even though they have about one frame of additional input lag (because the DS-family displays Nintendo used are slightly laggier than the GBA's). You don't need to oversell the MiSTer, is a fine device, but it's not a magica device that replaces real hardware.
>>12726980You're putting an awful lot of faith in youtubers to run an update_all script, I would be very surprised if they ran that in the past year.
>>12726637Don't mod your TV, you will kill the lifespan. Play NES SNES and N64 over composite.
>>12726981Well, I don't think so, but regardless of whether that's the case, my own experience is what it is. It's interesting how people keep bringing up updating the core only when it comes to MiSTer, as if this month's core update has finally turned it into a "true" GBA, somehow justifying what buyers paid for it and eliminating all the bugs, when its GitHub is still full of open issues. It smells like cope to me.
>>12726987>somehow justifying what buyers paid for it and eliminating all the bugsUsing the word "buyers" for what is an open source community driven project is quite gross. The issue in that livestream was fixed some time before October 2025, since that's the oldest GBA core I currently have downloaded. Youtubers often represent the average person, which is to say they're extremely lazy and never update anything.
>>12726994>Using the word "buyers" for what is an open source community driven project is quite gross.Don't you have to buy hardware to use that software? And it's not exactly super cheap. Buyer’s remorse fits this situation perfectly. And it's not like there aren't already a bunch of commercial products based on it that people are buying, like the SuperStation. Why is there so much arguing just to avoid admitting that it's emulation, not original hardware? At no point have I questioned that MiSTer is a great way to emulate just due to the low input lag. I simply pointed out that it is what it is: emulation. Then you'll tell me people don't immediately jump in to justify their purchase the moment someone dares to say it isn't 100% accurate.
>>12727005>Don't you have to buy hardware to use that software? That's the case for every piece of software ever invented. The amount of money spent on just a few old consoles + modern ROM loading solutions would easily exceed the price of even the most riced out MiSTer setup. Any edge case bugs are a much smaller price to pay, especially when the one you linked was already fixed over a year ago.
>>12726637>I recently bought a 27" Sony Trinitron kv-27s22 as my 1st step into retro gaming, but now need to figure out how to play retro games on it. Is buying original hardware still considered the best route? Or is modding a Nintendo Wii just as good?mister if you can or raspberry pi if you want to be a nigger
>>12727014>That's the case for every piece of software ever invented.Exactly. But you're the one who said I can't somehow use "buyer" because it's open source? Seriously, this discussion is getting ridiculous.>Any edge case bugs are a much smaller price to payYou can say the same about software emulation then.
>stealth mister advertisement thread
Im pretty frugal and even I bought a mister. Its everything I ever wanted.>have a dedicated crt attached to it, just turn on the mister and start playing>no booting up PC and using an OS to run games through retroarch yucky interfaceIt has literally every system you could ever want and does other stuff not even game play related (like downscaling for retro tv watching) and moreIm sure if its ever less than 100 dollars for a mister set people will jump on it, I can see being weary of 160-200 dollar price tagfor me I probably would have bought a mini-pic to run the games for the same price or more eventually if I never found mister.I would never buy one of the consolized versions though (super station, m64, etc) too gimmickyAnd Yes I am shill etc etc
>>12727026>Im sure if its ever less than 100 dollars for a mister set people will jump on it, I can see being weary of 160-200 dollar price tagIt just needs to be below $500 for a complete setup. The $160 figure sounds great until you realize that's not enough to actually play any games.
>>12727034You say the same lie in every thread lmaoI got the full setup from RetroRemake for 120 plus tax
>>12727020>But you're the one who said I can't somehow use "buyer" because it's open source?MiSTer is not a product. I personally dislike consumerist language in relation to hobbyist projects.>You can say the same about software emulation then.Sure, but software emulation requires an operating system and will never have native controller support or analog video out.
Super Metroid you are eating good
>>12727036sorry it was 156 + shipping for the ultimate bundle
>>12727037>MiSTer is not a product. I personally dislike consumerist language in relation to hobbyist projects.I think you're conflating the technical meaning of "product" with its marketing connotations. "Product" doesn't inherently imply commercialization or consumerism. Open-source projects are routinely referred to as products in software development without diminishing their collaborative nature. Maybe this is my economist's professional bias speaking.>but software emulation requires an operating system and will never have native controller support or analog video outJust more of those "smaller prices to pay" you mentioned. My conclusion remains the same as it's been from the beginning: either the real deal with original hardware, or emulation with more or fewer compromises. Personally, these days, and unfortunately for my wallet, my own experience keeps bringing me back to the real hardware.
>>12726692You can use gamecube remote for a modded wii. Hold down reset when you power it on and you will get a menu to boot directly into homebrew channel. Or you could just go buy some gay new machine instead of modding things and having actual fun, I don't care what you do.
>>12726637>Or is modding a Nintendo Wii just as good?Yeah, it's awesome. Hell, it's my daily driver for PSX emulation, let alone SNES. Nintendo even made SNES-style controllers that use the same plugs as Wii peripherals, so you can be extra authentic.
>>12726692>Also, isnt Wii emulation of retro consoles much less accurate then real hardware? It has a 733Mhz processor which is more than enough to emulate PS1 at full speed, to say nothing of SNES.>idk if i can deal with using the shtty wii remote to play gamesHolding it horizontally is perfect for NES emulation, but for other emulators you can use a GameCube controller, Wii Classic Controller, Wii Classic Controller Pro, the NES Classic or SNES Classic controllers, or even a USB controller on many emulators.
In order of fidelity:- original hardware, with rgb cables- PC with a compatible video card and batoceracrt/Groovymame- Raspberry pi with RGBPi cable- Modded WiiA lot of people will swear by the mister, I Haven't tried it myself, but most Mister users are a bunch of annoying shits so I don't trust them.
>>12727126How exactly does the Wii have the least "fidelity"?
A cheap Wii bundle is great to get started and does nes/snes/gc/240p test suite very well so I would get one no matter which direction you ultimately choose later on.
>>12727191>>12727130Wii is retard proof but mister is best and pi is better than itWith the wii the emulators are kind of shit but you can inject a lot of games and play their vc versions. controller options are shit. its weak. dont see why you would get it over the pi. its good if you have one laying around already though
>>12727226>pi is better than itAbsolutely not, the composite out on the Pi is garbage and it has a fixed horizontal resolution of 720px, leading to scaling artefacts in all games. Not to mention that the retro distros available for it range from nearly 10 years out of date, to dropping support for analog video altogether. PSX emulation on the Wii is in a better place today than if you were to load up RetroPie lol. The use case of a Raspberry Pi on a CRT is Dreamcast emulation and maybe some source ports, but there is no reason to pick it up for SNES games when Wiis can be bought for peanuts and have better picture quality.
>>12727042>>12727042fake image, it's been sold out, why do you come to lie about this shit?
>>12726637Get the cheapest Mister you can get
>>12727226Apples to oranges. You're comparing a $50 used wii bundle that are ubiquitous to a $200 mister setup.
>samefag mister schizokeep going bud, you're doing great
>>12726637Ok OP, I was born in the long dark ages of the CRT era so I will reveal the path to you.Ignore anyone talking composite, SCART, RF. absolute red flag you are dealing with a larper if you see any of those words. The first step is to warm up the phosphor layers. If you don’t do this the color will be wrong. Mostly it’s best to place the CRT in a warm bath for at least 30 minutes, try to submerge the whole thing. Plugged in is best. Now being a zoomer zombie with no attention span this may be too slow for you can also boil some water in a kettle and throw it right over the CRT.After that you are ready to connect the CRT. You take aluminium sheets and roll them into a tight cable like shape and then connect it from the output on your console (once you buy one lol) straight to the TV. Pro-tip is to soak the aluminum in vinegar first as this makes the electrons move faster. Now you are ready to turn things on.
>>12726637Out of all the retro junk that I've wasted money on over the years, I use real hardware with flash carts the most. It's the perfect mix of authenticity and convience in my opinion.
>>12726984Does it actually? I heard adding Svideo and component is super simple on these tvs since their just disabled from the factory. How can that kill the tv?>>12727114>>12727117Is the Dpad on those Wii Snes controllers any good? I heard the OG SNES controller has the greatest Dpad known to man, and dont want any compromises. Regardless, the Wii sounds pretty tempting rn for playing old nintendo on my crt. Is SNES picture quality blurry on it though? Heard the best SNES console is 1CHIP but dont know if that ever been emulated before. >>12727834Arent you afraid of these retro consoles dying though? Most of them are at least 30+ years old, is there any way to maintain them for another 30?
>>12726926I said 'looks'. Words matter. It looks and feels indistinguishable from original hardware for most cores. And for handhelds I'd much rather use the real handhelds modded than mister because I don't want to play them on a TV plus much of the handheld experience is lost that way. Also mGBA is dogshit on desktop and the mister core feels way better btw.
a wii isn't perfect but it's a great option and definitely the cheapest AND simplest option. i use nes and snes mini controllers plugged into the wiimote, and real genesis and master system controllers plugged into a raphnet adaptor that plugs into the gamecube port for my controller setup. but a wii classic controller is more than enough for most people. also with the wii, you get access to all of the wii and gamecube games natively. the value is really good for a cheap retro crt setup.
>>12728050I think he's trollingI haven't used the wii controllers but I can give you input on the switch classic controllers that nintendo made that can be wired or bluetooth. Those dpads are wayy stiffer than the original snes controllers, even after dozens of hours breaking them in. So I wouldn't trust the wii ones either. The original snes dpad is indeed the best ever, assuming you can get ones that haven't been used to death or with replaced membranes off ebay.Yes the wii snes cores are blurrier and don't feel very authentic compared to better ways of emulating
>>12728074Dang. Might just have to buy a real SNES then. But Im assuming most controllers are clapped out with higher mileage than a Vietnamese street walker. Are there any good third party SNES controllers that come close to replicating the greatness of the DPAD? I know for Genesis, retrobit and 8bitdoare widely considered to be just as good as the original Sega gamepads, but I dont know if such praise is shared for SNES 3rd party controllers.
>>12728096Just get the replaced membrane ones on ebay. I bought two. they're phenomenal and feel good as new. Looks like they're out of stock but I imagine more will come. https://www.ebay.com/itm/125135819246IBuffalos were decent but they don't make them anymore. They were cheap and extremely low input lag but kinda fell apart fast and dpad felt odd but worked well. I don't really like 8shitdo very much. I've owned two. Loud buttons on both. one of the dpads gave false diagonals, the pro 2. apparently they fixed that with the pro 3 but I still hear it has loud buttons.
I've never really played any NES & SNES games, got a modded 3DS with a SNES emulator. Currently playing Blackthorne, any recommendations?
Ok fellas I've been bitten by the retro bug and now want to play SNES. Is this a decent deal? I heard the 1CHIP SNES are the best since they clean up the blurry picture that other SNES models suffer from. Fuck....this is addicting. >>12728125Thx! Ill keep an eye out for them.
>>12728149For that price I think you should be looking for an SNES jr with an RGB mod, those are the last SNES boards made and are 1CHIP. That's the best video quality you can get from SNES.
>>12728050>Does it actually? I heard adding Svideo and component is super simple on these tvs since their just disabled from the factory. How can that kill the tv?I've never tried modding them but I've read a few stories and fake stories online about how the mods work for a while but because you may have changed the load on the circuit adding new hardware to it, it will wear out other components much faster. Hypothetically it makes sense to me and I've never had trouble finding TVs that for my needs so I've never felt the urge to mod sets. Anyways just stick with component and you can play pretty much everything.NES = RF, compositeSNES = RF, composite, RGBN64 = composite, SV
>>12728149Just to let you know I'm not full of shit about the snes controllers feeling brand new, I have a brand new super famicom controller which have identical dpads to the US snes controllers to compare the dpads to as a reference. They feel 100% the same(perfect). By the way I forgot, you can get an open box new super famicom controller off ebay for like $60ish as well. The reason they go that cheap is they have a significant drawback of having only like a 3-4 ft cable lol so there's less demand I think. The japs gamed like right up to the tv I guess. Anyways, they're compatible with u.s snes according to google and they have red yellow green blue colored buttons instead of shades of purple but y and b aren't indented like U.S. You may already know that shit, but. No idea about the snes being a good deal or not, I just use mister. I sold my consoles.
>>12728050>Is the Dpad on those Wii Snes controllers any good?Yes, they're great.>Is SNES picture quality blurry on it though? No, idk what that one bloke is talking about with them being blurry. I use composite video and even the composite output on the Wii is really good.
>>12727036What do you mean every thread?
>>12726646>Composite onlyNintendo literally sold official S-Video cables for the SNES, so it's not an "incorrect" way to play the console
>>12728643>What do you mean every thread? This board attracts autists who think everyone who disagrees with them is the same enemy they've been fighting for months. Just don't engage, you'll be happier for it.>>12728050>How can that kill the tv?There's two kinds of TV mods: 1) Adding a missing port header, or adding/removing a jumper that enables a regional variation. And 2) Adding in additional hardware that grafts on functionality on a TV not built to take it.1) is usually fine, 2) is theoretically fine but in practice most of these mods are dreadfully incompetent and will teach you how to kill your vintage electronics in no time flat.Console modding is the same. "Just tap this for 5v, bro" yeah, and also just don't do any follow up video where 50% of your customers who paid you to do the mod now have fucked consoles because it turns out a component built for 100mA isn't good at powering a whole ass microcontroller. Assume the guy showing you how to do it is a retard, it saves time.
>>12728797>This board attracts autists who think everyone who disagrees with them is the same enemy they've been fighting for months. Just don't engage, you'll be happier for it.Yeah there are surely severeal hundred different people all saying the mister costs 500 dollars of their own free mind when it costs 200 or lessShut the FUCK up schizo
>>12728662Doesn't change the fact that many developers are going to make their games with composite in mind since like 95% of people used the cables that came with the console.
>>12726637We got Opener threads by YOU KNOW WHO smith, and if you point it out he can ban you to bully you.
>>12727114It's ok for some consoles, SNES is slightly off, you are better of getting a real SNES and investing on a FXPakPro, and PS1 you need to get a modded one, outside of that you have NES, GENESIS, PCE, GBA and GCN and Wii games so don't diss it.Just remember that composite output on the Wii is too clean for 240p stuff and in my opinion, not as sharp or good.
>>12727117>It has a 733Mhz processor which is more than enough to emulate PS1 at full speed, to say nothing of SNESIf you don't play with dither that is and not for Tekken3, Bloody Roar 2 and I heard that even Silent Hill chugs along too but I haven't been able to corroborate, the latter looks fucking ugly without the dither blending man. Also Wiistation hasn't really got a real update since they added that outdated version of OpenGX, and lots of games got brocken with it, specially 2D games.Plus having to change between Old GTX and New GFX for certain games kinda sucks, and god knows how many games still don't play well or cause stack dumps, I know I sound pessimistic but I been following development ever since they rebranded from WiiSxRX, even WiiSX got updated yet still has many games run slower then Wiistation, they added 240p but only works on component, on composite it fucks up the picture. For what is worth, they recently released a fork of that Seta-GX for Saturn games, called Z-GX, and at least some games run acceptable on Wii at full speed but not perfect.Rayearth and Alpha 3 don't load and many many many games stack dump.....3D is out of question for Wii and meant for Wii U priority.
>>12727240By "the composite on the Rpi is garbage" what the hell do you mean exactly? As in, it's not as good as the Wii's output but closer to NES and SNES composite, (bleedy but sharpy and nice looking), or like, legit garbage?
>>12728617A BIT too good actually and no I am not that faggot dip shit who was just bitching for the sake of it, allow me to get some captures.

>>12727126>PC with a compatible video card and batoceracrt/GroovymameI spent a ton building a system for this purpose but the actual video quality, even with legit 240p output, still didn't look as good as emulating on a modded Wii. The original Wii's composite output is S-tier.And obviously if you're not using composite you just fell for the RGB meme, which sadly it seems you have.
MiSTer is the way to go, especially if you plan on playing on a CRT. I haven't touched my RGB modded N64 or SNES with flash carts since I got it. I noticed there's a lot of anti-MiSTer shills on this board, as if they were manufactured by one company. They are simple to build (finding the parts in stock was more of a hassle) and apparently there are budget options available but I don't know anything about them. If you get a MiSTer you won't ever need any of those trendy bullshit FPGA consoles that have been coming out as of late unless you care about using real cartridges or discs. MiSTer sure is damn ugly though.
