Why not release it on 32 n64 carts instead?

The truth is the FMVs were unnecessary, and were a relic of the FMV slop era that started on the Sega CD. It would have still been as good a game as it was without them. But as a 90s retard who didn't know anything about file sizes or how much space videos take, you saw that the game was 3 discs and assumed that meant the game was three times as big as other games.
>>
>>12726680
Nobody bought FFVII because they happened across it in a store and thought "woah, three discs!"
Also, it was 2-3x bigger than other games, in the context of "big" as a kid not knowing about memory would think.
Also, to be cheeky, the CD-i did it before the Sega CD.

Finally someone brave enough to say it. FF7 could have worked on N64 if they tried.
>>
Thank you for telling Square how their own game should be... but you realize those FMVs were insanely impressive back then, right? They aren't something you can just take out, they were literally the reason why Square decided they needed discs. FF7 was always going to be made with these FMVs being major parts of its presentation.

In fact, Square was so enamoured with their FMVs that they actually thought if they made an entire FF movie with the same quality as the FMV sequences in 7-10, people would love it and they could become the next Pixar.

How about 64 N64 carts?

It was the same size as FF6

Miss me with these loading times, carts were better always.

This. Still are. Also FFVII was responsible for the trannyfication of our society and I'm tired of pretending wasn't.

There was definitely a gap in time where discs were better than carts for memory purposes. Just look at how many corners had to be cut with Resident Evil 2 to get that game on the N64. Now in the era of Switch 2 anything can be put on a cartridge.

>cartridge
Not to be pedantic, but they're more like SD cards than they are cartridges. GBA was the last handheld that carried cartridges in a "true" sense.
>>
>>12728521
I would still call them carts. Everyone I knew called DS and Turbografx16 games carts. I guess it depends on who you are around.

Quite wrong.
Aside from being totally wrong about the importance of the FMV's to FF7*, and ignoring possible technical 3D rendering limitations on the N64, the real meat of the game that could not have been done on the N64 was the pre-rendered CGI.

FF7 is an RPG. A key aspect of an RPG is depicting a large fantasy world. FF7 uses the pre-rendered CGI to present hundreds of richly detailed locations ranging from the slums of Midgar to the high-tech Shinra Tower to the beaches of Costa del Sol to the abandoned spaceship in Rocket Town.

This could simply not have been done on the N64. There was no way. These environments could not have been depicted in such variety and detail using in-engine rendering system.

*Imagine Aeris death scene not being FMV

Not to sound reductive, but wouldn't that make the world more limited in scope? You're confined entirely to JPEGs while only the characters themselves are 3D. It's not the same level of interaction as... say, OOT.

What makes you think N64 can't do prerendered backgrounds?

It's a different goal. FF7 uses the classic Final Fantasy formula. There's plenty of interactivity in Final Fantasy 7, as far as the expectations of the players of the genre go. Indeed, FF7 goes above and beyond in that regard by adding an entirely unnecessary minigame subsystem (surfing, chocobo racing, motorcycle chase, submarine game, an RTS). And the field map system has its own minigames (shittier ones like the dolphin jump).

OoT is fine for what it is, but it does not depict anywhere close to the range of locations that FF7 does. That there may be some arbitrarily higher number of "3D interactions" in OoT could not be less relevant to the design goals of the franchise and genre.

FF7 has a lot of combat. That's the core gameplay. In between combat, you explore the world, which consists of mostly talking to NPCs and finding items (and occasionally solving puzzles). And of course, the cutscenes and storytelling, which are mostly depicted in the pre-rendered CGI environments.

Ain’t that what Square is doing right now with the remake?

I half agree. If someone forced Squaresoft to develop it for the N64 they would have been unable to get the same graphical fidelity they got from their CGI (Softimage?) scenes. However that's not because the N64 wasn't capable, in fact the way they chose to model the world and especially the characters was like tailor made for the limitations of the N64. Squaresoft's talent at the time were rightly worried about the transition to 3D and no doubt thought long and hard about what they could and couldn't achieve in a reasonable timeframe. And once they had set off down the path that was FMV+CGI backgrounds, they were now locked in for the whole gen. Maybe by FF8 they were clued up on 3D well enough that the N64 wouldn't have been a challenge, but the time for 2 year long R&D projects was passed. Now was the factory production process of making 3 games based on a working formula.

How much space can a jpeg take up?
