Hey, dude! Glad you could come over! I'm so tired of school!
>Yeah, man! Do you have Nintendo or do you have Sega?
Huh? Oh! Uh, I have a computer.
>Yeah me too but what about video games?
Uh, when my dad isn't using the computer for Word Perfect or Lotus 123 he lets me okay with it. Come on in!
>Uh, actually I think I gotta go. I forgot my mom told me to mow the lawn.
Oh...do you want to come over this weekend?
>No
>>

a fucking robot

Because you are a little fag. We had so much with a computer holy shit. Especially with a microphone!

>Can't talk about Mario, Sonic, Zelda or Pokémon in the school yard
>Cram all your friends around the keyboard that has one set of arrow keys
Girl please.

PC gaming has always been way too expensive for most people to get into. Up until like the mid 2000s anyway, it was almost exclusively a toy for rich kids.
>buy a three thousand dollar computer (like 12k today adjusted for inflation)
>is outdated and worthless for recent games by the end of the year
Even shareware had some crazy requirements at times
>>
A crude reality most people will probably never admit, is that playing on PC back then was, for most kids, a very choppy and precarious experience.
Far from the idea of masterrace Gamer™ that always have the best specs for the most advanced games, reality is that most kids who played on PC back then had to deal with having PCs that, while able to run games, usually had an underperforming experience. And, unlike on a console, where developers had things like framedrops into consideration while developing the game, on PC, games were designed for the optimal specs, so you were not just playing at low framerates, you were also dealing with an unintended way to play, so it never really felt quite right, stability was rare.
I know some richfags or people who were already adults with jobs back in the 90s, and who could afford rig updates every 6~12 months, were probably enjoying a prime experience but for 99% of the population, PC gaming was trying to run Pentium games on a 486
>>
>>12727483
Same goes for console gamers. Many had consoles 1 generation behind current until upgrading to a new console mid generation
>>
>>12727518
Right but they weren't trying to run a Saturn game on a Genesis.
PC allowed you to "play" pentium games on a 486, in a very compromised state
>>
>>12727529
Yep. Everybody loves to jerk off Doom, but nobody could reasonably run the shit. There's a very good reason for people losing their minds over the doom console ports we were seeing in the early to mid 90s. And why they were all so damn disappointing, too. That shit couldn't even run on the next gen console hardware nearly a decade after release.
>>
>>12727456
Hey bitch we've had emulators for a very long time
>>
>>12727565
With regards to doom, I actually remember it running well on 486, maybe 386 too?
But anything with a real 3D engine like Magic Carpet would be slideshows
>>
>>12727596
Wasn't the 486 framerate equivalent to the snes port? So like 10fps?

You didn't have any friends, which is why you can't imagine a scenario enjoying yourself with them. I played so much Command & Conquer and Quake III with friends as a kid.

>>12727478
Zoom zoom. PCs were very affordable by the turn of the century and anyone who wasn't literally Kenny from South Park had their parents by them one "for school work".
>>
And nowadays running old pc games is a pain in the ass because of compatibility. You know, there's a reason why people buy dedicated hardware to game.
>>
>>12727640
I was raised trailer trash, anon. PCs were a magical thing in the 90s
>>
>>12727307
Yeah, that's why many of the most important games of the 80's, 90's and early 2000's skipped PC entirely or had shit tier ports on it. So premium.
>>
>>12727307
Nah. PC was generally treated as a second class citizen well into the seventh gen even. Lots of console releases either got a much later port or not at all.
>>
>>12727642
I imagine everything is a pain in the ass when you're fucking retarded
>>
>>12727409
>you don't have the toy I like? bye
You must be fun at parties
>>
>>12727646
"Most people" aren't trailer trash so use better wording next time.
>>
>>12727409
>>Uh, actually I think I gotta go. I forgot my mom told me to mow the lawn.
This would not happen. Computers were a big draw for 90s and 2000s kids. Kids would put up with a lot of hassle just to interact with a piece of unfamiliar tech. You'd sit in some kid you didn't even particularly like's mom's bedroom on a kitchen chair just because it meant another precious hour or two with a PC.
>>
>>12727565
>but nobody could reasonably run the shit.
Doom runs well on a 486.
>>
>>12727483
>back then
OP has used a computer from the mid-2000s as his image, so I assumed this thread was more about the 2000-2010 era. And the PC gaming experience during that time was much different than what you are describing (which is accurate to the 90s).
>>
>>12727614
>Wasn't the 486 framerate equivalent to the snes port? So like 10fps?
That would depend on the graphics settings you used. Doom has a high and low graphics setting, and then you can reduce the internal resolution (changing the window size) to improve your frame rate. So you could have 35 fps, but it would look very small and pixelated. A lot of people probably played the game at 15-20 fps.
>>
>>12727596
Doom will run "okay" on a 368 on low settings in a small window.
>>
>>12727478
>PC gaming has always been way too expensive for most people to get into.
I got my first PC for FREE out of a DUMPSTER in the year 2001. A Pentium 120hz which I upgraded to either 16 or 32mb of ram and ran Windows 95 on. I got ANOTHER PC for free about a year later that was a Pentium II when a neighbor woman gave it to me because she had somehow fucked up the configuration and it only ever showed the MS-Dos prompt and she had went and bought a whole new computer to replace it. I used the recovery disc in the box and restored it back to Windows 98.

Okay, but neither of those sound like they would’ve been able to run many then current games. There’s a difference between having a PC and having a gaming PC.
>>
>>12728441
Kids are so pathetic.
>>
>>12727409
>Not having both
If your friends could come over you played on the 64/GameCube, if they couldn't you got online and played Age of Empires and Counter-Strike with them instead.
>>
>>12727640
K6-2 in 2001, the Athlon was already 2 years old by then. Not saying you couldn't play most games from 98' on a K6-2. But the Celeron or the Athlon was what budget gamers were buying around that time.
>>
>>12728987
In 2000 online gaming was rough. Not accessible to most. LAN parties were still very much a thing.
>>
>>12728589
>Okay, but neither of those sound like they would’ve been able to run many then current games.
That is irrelevant. Playing old PC games is still PC gaming.
>There’s a difference between having a PC and having a gaming PC.
The statement was "PC gaming has always been way too expensive for most people to get into". That is false. Playing 90s PC games on a budget PC in the 2000s was still PC gaming.
>>
>>12727478
>PC gaming has always been way too expensive for most people to get into
PC games were not the expensive part, it was brand new hardware. You made do with the dogshit you already had and if it didn't work you moved on to something else until you got a computer that could run it. Do you not have any knowledge or memory of software rendering Quake and Quake 2 and both ran like trash?
