Is this game any good?

looking to play some Castlevania-like games, any recommendations are appreciated.

The sword is even more pathetic than Link's in Zelda 2

The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles on NES is an underlooked Castlevania clone, worth checking out if you want some 2D whip action

A lot of people don't realize it, but the Goemon games are very similar to Castlevania in a number of traits, mostly the weapon powerup system, and how Goemon's pipe can upgrade to a chain pipe which works essentially the same as a whip, or a mix of a whip and a hookshot.
Goemon's Great Adventure on N64 is also a good challenge, and has the spooky underworld yokai theme, I call it Goemonvania.

It's good, but it's not as good as Castlevania. Level design is a bit more bland, enemies are less memorable, music (though good) is not quite at the Castlevania level. The birdy gimmick is pretty cool and even allows for limited co-op play for what little that's worth. The puzzle of getting through the boss fights in the right order is obtuse and during my play at least it was completely useless; they tried to do a little bit of a Mega Man thing and I just ignored it and fought whoever I wanted to fight and it worked out fine. The other big framing-device puzzle did work for me and is kinda fun. Even though it isn't great, I somehow enjoyed the game enough to play through multiple loops of it as an adult, after having never quite beaten it as a kid. Learning good patterns to use against the bosses was really fun for me, somehow. It's a solid game. Play it or skip it according to your whims.

You can get a gun though. Link never gets a gun.

If you just want sidescrolling adventures through mildly spooky worlds full of fantastical monsters you could pick from lots of options I suppose. For example:
Ghosts 'n Goblins / Makaimura series, as well as its spinoff Gargoyle's Quest/Demon's Crest/whatever games
Majyuuou (SFC)
Kick Master (NES)

8 Eyes is not great but not as bad as some people will want you to believe.
In Japan it's considered a hidden gem with a steep difficulty curve.
It also has a cult status for being produced by the guy who made Desth of a clown (cult adventure game like Portopia)
