Why did classic videogames never tackle serious politics or themes? Seems like a wasted opportunity. They were all mostly a distraction for children that ignored the themes of their era.
>>12728243Kojima hadn't invented it yet
I know we needed a runaway slave plantation videogame.
They didThere's a Famicom Disk System game that deals with the Holocaust and slavery and Jesus Christ
>>12728243Games are supposed to be fun, not some lesson on some shoehorned in social bullshit
>first sentence leads up into the second one>third kind of answers the question posed in two previous ones awkwardlyAI slop thread.
>>12728243>Why did classic videogames never tackle serious politics or themes? That would absolutely have ruined it for every single game. The only game that did it right was Castlevania Bloodlines, were (((vampires))) conspire to start a world war.
I mean Mario always had the theme of it being a mushroom Kingdom in war with a tribe of wizard turtle empire. Then there's Mario, a middle class blue collar guy saving the day for the inoperant mushroom royalty.Mario 3 gets even more political, with the inclusion of the different regions and kings. The Mario movie also has great social commentary.
>>12728243Because not everything has to be political you stupid piece of shit.
>>12728256which you never played
You get some stuff about large-scale social oppression or racism here and there in RPGs, both J and non-J. Civilization seriously explores history and politics to a small but significant extent (before inevitably veering off in a fun-over-realism direction). There's also some weird old stuff that went in this direction. Chris Crawford, for example, was really interested in it; look into Balance of Power or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balance_of_the_Planet

>>12728243plenty of them did, and most got memory-holed because the vast majority of gamers playing in those days were kids that wanted to kid's games. >>12728348if you want an example of a game lots of people played, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream came out in 1995 and tackles the morality of Nazis (you play one at one point) as well as rape and other forms of evil. Older shit didn't have tons of players because gaming was a niche hobby for predominantly kids.
>>12728243Rush'n Attack you are literally killing men with families to feed at homeIn Desert Strike you basically have Suddam Hussein but its played as a legit conflictIn Civilization they tried to play up the global warming nuclear war stuffA ton of games with Hitler hidden in there too.I think politics didn't affect people that much so most media including movies didn't have it either.I remember a recent Far Cry that portrayed Christians praying as mentally unstable.
