Thoughts on the TG-16/PCE and it's library of games?
>>
>>12734598
I love pomeranians so much. Cutest dog breed ever.
>>
>>12734598
Cure dog however the Turbograx has no fucking games worth playing, I can't imagine buying this over a snes or a genesis
>>
>>12734598
I only played 5 PC engine games

Neutopia
Rondo of blood
Pc kid 1
Gunhed
Star soldier

They were ok/good but not amazing, even rondo of blood amazing presentation but i much prefer Castlevania 3 and 4 in the classicvania

They considered some of the best games on the machine and they didn't push me to continue exploring the library
>>
I can play Military Madness for hours and I don't even like turn based strategy
>>
I'm on my third PCE from Japan, nothing but rust issues. All 3 I got have what I'd call catastrophic rust on the PCB and aren't worth recapping since it's only a matter of time before the rust eats a vital trace.
>>
>>12734669
How did three PCEs survive Japan for 40 years but not your country for 4 years?
>>
>>12734674
They are coming from Japan rusted, I'm ordering them directly.
>>
I have a lot of respect for the system although I don't own an actual one. I have the PC Engine Mini, but mostly just use its controllers to play PCE games on the MiSTer.
Neat hardware and I love the Hucard format. Some wizardry that allowed them to put such decent arcade ports on those tiny things. I own a couple of Master System MyCards, but Sega ditched the format so quickly to focus on cartridges that there's a very limited selection and they're the more basic games on the console.

Personal faves: Fantasy Zone, Blazing Lasers, Ys Book 1&2, Devil’s Crush
>>
>>12734598
Great shmups from what I hear, haven't played them though.
>>
>>12734653
>Military Madness
I found some game on my Turbo flashmaster that is basically MM but with mechs. Its all in moon runes but it is easy enough to figure out.
>>12734690
>Great shmups from what I hear
It definitely has a lot of them. Played a few of the more famous ones and was impressed with how well they looked/played. Shumps are not exactly my forte tho.
>>
>>12734852
That's awesome! I've heard it's got the best version of R-Type, as well as a few remastered NES-to-TG16 ports.
>>
>>12734669
Get a fibre brush scratch pen, some deoxit/electric contact cleaner and dielectric copper tape (if any traces are broken)
>>
>>12735008
Yeah, don't all this but in my experience once PCB starts rusting it's just a matter of time. Next time I buy one I'm gonna ask for the seller to open it up for pics before they send
>>
>>12735029
Well desu I think after a certain point you just have to put up with software emulation or a FPGA solution.
I had to do this with ye olde Saturn that rusted to its VDP1 chip and started displaying garbage. The MiSTer Saturn core is in a not-perfect-but-good-enough place now imo.
I'd love to have explored the PCE hardware and its library if it weren't so expensive for Britbonglanders, similar with NES since it bombed here
>>
>>12735087
>Britbonglanders
>NES
How was playing Elite on the thing? Must've been surreal playing such a game on a console KEK.
>>
>>12735087
I have a few mister devices and do software emulation. I just also like to have original hardware in hand. I literally only have this problem with PCEs. Every other console I've imported or had since childhood is perfectly fine. Just want a device to recap, maybe add an RGB mod or something like, then have it sit on a shelf for reference
>>
>>12734647
I would give it another shot anon. If you like the NES and Genesis library then you should find something on there worth playing.
>>12734682
>Devil’s Crush
Never thought I would be saying that a video pinball game of all things is top tier but here we are. Alien Crush is great as well.
>>12734856
>best version of R-Type
Only dabbled with that port for a little bit but it was for sure the best looking R-Type I have played.
>>
>>12734669
Have you tried removing the rust?
>>
>>12735641
Once the rust gets on the PCB in my life experiences it's between the layers or in the traces and even if you clean and recap it's a matter of time before the rust gets to other traces

Worth checking out the expanded Mega Drive/Genesis port as well (Devil Crash MD/Dragon's Fury). Couple of the bonus tables can get a bit long and repetitive though.

Have you played both? Just curious if one is noticeably better than the other.

TG16 has the better sound track

https://youtu.be/nHCCoNyNFtY
>>
It had a good collection of shmups and that is about it. Bonk is overrated and only remembered because there basically was nothing else.
Throw in PC Engine CD and you have Rondo and more shmups.
That’s it outside of a few select titles besides those (Bloody Wolf, Legendary Axe, etc). Falcom games on the CD add-on are there if you want them.
>>
>>12734598
I love the sound of the sound chip but I wish the games had longer soundtracks. Not sure if the shorter music was due to space limitations or some other quirk of the chip but it feels like it had a lot more potential than I've been able to suss from the library.
>>
>>12737484
It's got way more potential than you think. There's this dude who makes excellent TG16 covers using Furnace.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5LvZP6sdAM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMNkVJ_GOMU
>>
>>12737493
See that's what I mean. The chip sounds great and has unique enough properties that you can tell it's from the PC Engine by ear, but most of the soundtracks are super short. There just should have been more is all.
>>
>>12734598
It had games?
>>
>>12734598

Trashbox.
>>
>>12737574
>It had games?
Lets look it up!
>A total of approximately 672 to 678 official commercial games were released for NEC's Wikipedia's List of TurboGrafx-16 games spanning both the standard HuCard and CD-ROM formats during its lifetime.
That's quite a few..
>The vast majority of the library—over 540 games—stayed exclusive to Japan
Welp... could always learn a new language.
>>
>>12734598
It's great if you really like shmups and not much else
>>
>>12737493
I've done some remixes before and couldn't even guess what that guy's workflow is unless he just sequences them from scratch. Usually there's a way to convert the original track to MIDI and then import in other programs but still requires heavy editing. Impressive as hell however he does it though.
>>
>>12734598
Bonk 1/2/3, nuff said.
>>
Let's looks at this a different way.

The TGFX-16 was made to compete with the NES and supposedly, Hudsun Soft tried to sell it to Nintendo but they didn't want it to be the next NES and so the TGFX-16 became a rival system. Granted, the US division of TGFX-16 that handled marketing and sales for the US market were absolute fools so it never outsold the NES nor was any sort of a threat to the yakuza family of big bad Nintendo.

Now, when I was in my preteens in 1989 and if you showed me an 8-bit NES and then a TGFX-16, I would have to choose the TGFX-16.

Here are the available games for 1989 (I don't have the exact months for each one, but for late 1989 this is what you had available):

Alien Crush - pinball (before Devil's Crush came out the following year)
Blazing Lasers - space shooter (this is the first in a series of space shooters and they're amazing)
China Warrior - Bruce Lee rip-off sidescrolling fighting
Dragon Spirit - shoot-em up as a dragon
Dungeon Explorer - rpg of sorts
Galaga '90 - space shooter
Legendary Axe - amazing sidescrolling and platform(er) with weapons and monsters
R-Type - space shooter (it's a different kind of space shooter fun when compared to Blazing Lasers)
Sidearms - space shooter
Victory Run - gay racing game but you know it would have been fun as fuk back then
Vigilante - Data East really made some bad games with horrible controls and ridiculous difficulty but I still played this and it's still enjoyable

I'm pretty sure these would have been $49.99 ($137.86 nowadays) each new and you probably only would have 1 or 2 games unless you're parents were absurdly wealthy.

Any two of these would have been the king shit for 1989 if that's all you had and I do remember only having 1 or 2 games at a time.

Kids today are spoiled as fuk!

>>
>>12738027
That is actually an impressive first year line up. Some real bangers. In comparison the Genesis had these games released in '89.
Launch Titles:
(August 1989)Altered Beast (Pack-in/Launch game)
Last Battle
Space Harrier II
Super Thunder Blade
Thunder Force II
Tommy Lasorda Baseball
Late 1989 Releases:
World Championship Soccer (September 1989)
Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf (October 1989)
Ghouls 'n Ghosts (October 1989)
Rambo III (October 1989)
Super Hang-On (December 1989)
Forgotten Worlds (December 1989)
Mystic Defender (December 1989)
The Revenge of Shinobi (December 1989)
Truxton (December 1989)
>>
>>12738027
Except that the Genesis was also in the US at the same time and price, and had the following games available in 1989:

>Altered Beast
>Last Battle
>Space Harrier 2
>Super Thunder Blade
>Thunder Force II
>Tommy Lasorda Baseball
>World Championship Soccer
>Revenge of Shinobi
>Truxton
>Arnold Palmer Golf
>Ghouls n Ghosts
>Rambo III
>Forgotten Worlds
>Super Hang-On
>Mystic Defender

Makes the TurboGrafx look a little less jaw-dropping.

This is true. It has some really amazing games and the color palette and sound chip give them a unique charm.

I'm amazed at the goofy tech that NEC made for Hudson Soft during this era such as this 4 inches of portable LCD screen! In a era when you probably only had 1 tv in the house!
>>
>>12734598

I've only played R-Type and Ninja Spirit. Loved both and I plan to play more TG16 games.
>>
I always found it funny that this system's audience was either poor kids whose family couldn't afford anything else, or rich kids whose family could afford Nintendo, Sega and this.
>>
>>12736928
The way I see it's basically two different takes on the same game design concepts; PCE being Compile's and Mega Drive being Technosoft's.
The PCE version takes closer inspiration to actual pinball with some enhancements while the MD is a bit more spruced up with more extravagant spritework, slightly nerfed/easier pinball physics and extra bonus bosses.

>>12737154
Agree to disagree. I like the main table better on PCE but I prefer the title screen and bonus tracks on MD. Real hardware makes a difference though since so few MD emulators get the sound right.

Are the Bonk games still worth playing today if you never got into them before? I've played one or two levels before but it didn't feel like there was much to it. Also I fear that i've been spoiled by later platformers like &' and it might be harder to judge them on their own merits.

Yes, very much so.
>>
>>12739350
>the Bonk games still worth playing today if you never got into them before?
I juuusssttt beat Bonk 1 & 2 last weekend. Absolutely worth playing. Bonk 1 being the first is a little rough around the edges but still fun and would have been a fantastic game for the time. Bonk 2 took everything good about the first and greatly expanded it. Very solid and probably in the top 3 games I have played on that system so far. Have not gotten around to Bonk 3 yet outside of just trying it out for 20 minutes. Heard it was a downgrade and it felt like it from what little I played.
>>
>>12738940
>Bundling it with Blazing Lasers would be a start
What? Do you NOT like Keith Courage :^)
In all seriousness though your pick or Legendary Axe would have been an incredible pack-in that would have no doubt pushed more consoles.
>>
>>12737493
I thought it was generally considered that the PCE had better sound. I would think the PCE could mimick the MD easier than the other way around.

This video explains how it works, pretty simple, its just 6 waveforms stored in memory and played rapidly. No gems is a plus too.

https://youtu.be/0URhghSyb5E?list=PLIxuEiRc6F-5iOQ9pfuSf5_ll8HilYrPE&t=479

>>12739352
Its kind of deep in that if you do the head bonk with the enemies in the correct way you can move really fast. The nes and gb ports screwed that and many parts of the game up.

>>12735087
Damn, I have a spare PCE thats full of glitched lines and corrupted tilemap data, maybe thats it.

>>12734669
I had one and didn't play it for a couple of years, then it had display issues. I have a 2600 and the traces are really bubbly but it still works.
>>
>>12739780
Older stuff typically uses bulkier traces so it will last longer. Once the rot has started it's only a matter of time before the console dies. You can keep repairing traces but it will always spread.

My childhood Genesis has this issue, of course my childhood Genesis went for a swim when my parents basement flooded so I can't blame it.
>>
Want to add to my post here >>12739386 that I wasn't digging the Bonk art style at first but it absolutely grew on me the more I played.
>>
>>12738692
This comment about musical accuracy got me down a mini rabbit hole of reading about issues with sound chip emulation
>>
>>12739780
>I thought it was generally considered that the PCE had better sound.
What's interesting about the sound chip to me is that it can't do FM but it's surprisingly good at mimicking it in a way that sounds really unique. For me the best thing an older sound chip can do is sound distinct in some way and it's got that down easy.
>>
>>12738340
That thing is fuckin cool. I'd have been drowning in pussy if I whipped that put on the playground
>>
I like the system a lot, though I wish it had more platformers. When it came out platformers weren't the copycat genre that they would be by the early 90s when the genesis and snes were duking it out.

It does have the remake of Tower of Druaga which is one of my favorite games on the system (and a real top tier for me but i'm a druaga freak).
>>
>>12740492
I often wished the same of the Neo Geo. Spinmaster's the closest I can get to the kind of platformer I like on that console.
>>
>>12739631
People seem to hate Keith Courage, also didn't help that it was devloped by the same people who made Dr. Jekale and Mr. Hide for the NES and the anime it was based on wasn't dub into English, preventing people from buying the game... Only to find out that it's LJN (Beam Software; Because Atlus/Sanritsu/Westone and Rare were better then that) grade shovelware and that theres a much better (Japan only) NES game made by the Wonder Boy people at Westone.

Now then; Legendary Axe would've been a much better pack in.
>>
>>12740637
>Now then; Legendary Axe would've been a much better pack in.
NEC's North American branch were a bunch of morons who had zero clue about the toy or video game industry and was mostly a bunch of middle aged men and soccer moms who sold monitors and credit card pos equipment at wholesale to companies. They should've done what Sega did and hired somebody from the toy or game industry like Tom Kalinske to oversee the launch and guide the decision-making. They also should've shipped half of their launch units with Blazing Lazers, and half with Legendary Axe so the consumer could decide which launch title they wanted bundled, and make a big deal out of it in the marketing and put it all over the box which pack-in was included.
>>
>>12740729
Or better yet, let Hudson handle everything themselves because it's clear that NEC was holding them back.
>>
>>12740742
That's ideal, but Hudson was a smaller operation in North America than NEC, they would've had to invest and grow much larger in a very short amount of time that they didn't have.
>>
>>12740745
They already had retail space in Japan, they even started as a ham radio shop (only because a coffee shop was next door), problem was the Kubo brothers needed to manage their company better and set up North American operations earlier, even doing IBM, C64, Atari 8-Bit and Apple II software before the NES was released.

>>
>>12740783
I like Blazing Lazers, but shmups were pretty niche in America as is. If one was going to pack the console with a shmup, it should’ve been one that Americans already had some familiarity with (R-Type).
>>
>>12740791
That is valid too.
>>
>>12740791
>If one was going to pack the console with a shmup, it should’ve been one that Americans already had some familiarity with
I think in that case Galaga '90 would have been the better choice.
>>
>>12740826
They needed something more advance then a sequel to a 1981 arcade game.

They were better off using the Super Grafix spec and bundling it with Ghouls N' Ghosts, the motherboard already has the space and they were better off killing the PC Engine spec so the Super Grafix can survive (extra hardware tweaks like extra ram (64KB, up from 32K), a better CPU (65816 based at 10.74MHz) and a YM2612 for sound would've helped too).
>>
>>12738130
This sounds like a dumb contradictory AI bot
>>
>>12740842
No, the Supergrafx was a bloated mess that was expensive to produce as is (it launched in Japan at ¥39,800, and that’s without all the extra hardware you mentioned in your post, while the MD launched the previous year at ¥21,000 and a normal PCE could be bought for ¥18,800). Theres no way it would’ve been able to compete with the Genesis and later the SNES on price. The few hardware advantages it did have couldn’t even be used with the already established CD games. The SuperGrafx was pointless and there’s a reason it bombed horribly in Japan. The base PCE was perfectly capable of competing with the MD if given the right marketing and library.
>>
>>12740989
Most of that cost was strictly profit because it was the only way NEC could get any money off of it (software was 100% Hudson, it's why NEC released so many models that internally are identical from the last), if Hudson released it themselves with said bottlenecks fixed and killed off the base PC Engine it would've done much better, it would've sold cheaper too.

Leaving the base PC Engine existing is what killed the Super Grafx.
>>
>>12741028
>Most of that cost was strictly profit because it was the only way NEC could get any money off of it

Did you miss the part where I said that NEC was selling the normal PCE for less than half of what the SuperGrafx was at that point? That wasn’t the problem, the problem was that it was a terribly designed console made to maximize production costs while squeezing out as few advantages as possible.

>Leaving the base PC Engine existing is what killed the Super Grafx.

Yeah, because it was a much better designed machine. Even if the base PCE never existed, the Supergrafx still would’ve gotten its lunch eaten by the MD, which was much cheaper and more or less just as capable.
>>
>>12741098
You also said that NEC was ran by a bunch of morons who had zero clue about the toy or video game industry and was mostly a bunch of middle aged men and soccer moms who sold monitors, PCs that were not IBM compatible and credit card pos equipment at wholesale to companies, the fact that the base PC Engine was still being sold and supported after the release of the Super Grafx was one of those idiotic ideas.

The Super Grafx could've easily be sold for ¥19,900 yen, have said upgrades (better CPU, more work ram, YM2612) and more (Built in multi tap, S-Video and RGBS support out of the box, built in CD-Rom2 bios (2.1) and built in Ten No Koi 2 (saving/back up) with 8KB of storage) and still turned a good profit, NEC just was greedy because the only company making money on the software (both Hu-Card and CD) was Hudson and over charging the hardware was the only way NEC can make money off of it..

If Hudson did the PC Engine themselves none of this would've never happened and the Super Grafx would've thrived and shine because of those upgrades.
>>

When did I say that? I don’t know what anon you think I am, but it’s not me.

>the fact that the base PC Engine was still being sold and supported after the release of the SuperGrafx was one of those idiotic ideas.

If the PCE existing destroyed any chance of the SuperGrafx being successful, how do you not connect the dots and realize the SuperGrafx was never necessary to begin with? It’s the Apple III all over again.

>The Super Grafx could've easily be sold for ¥19,900 yen, have said upgrades…

Complete and utter nonsense and make believe lol.

> If Hudson did the PC Engine themselves

“If the toy company made the hardware instead of one of the largest electronics corporations in the world, it would’ve been cheaper.” Ah, of course! Why didn’t Hudson think of that? It’s so simple!

>The pricing information was reported in a PC Engine event in Japan that took place a couple of years ago where Ex-Hudson staff talked about NEC's fuck ups.

So, testimony 30+ years after the fact from the bitter staff of a now defunct company, trying to point blame at the corporation they chose to partner with to explain away why the PCE brand wasn’t an international success? Sounds like some rock solid evidence, I’d be interested to read more about that if you could provide me a link.

>set up North American operations earlier, even doing IBM, C64, Atari 8-Bit and Apple II software before the NES was released.
Absolutely no Japanese developers or publishers were doing that. Namco licensed everything to Atari, and Capcom licensed their titles to any britjank dev that threw money at them. Almost no Japanese developers or publishers were establishing U.S. branches until after the NES except Sega, and even they handed the Master System launch and manufacturing in North America to Tonka, of all companies.

There is a homebrew Genesis version that M2 bought the rights to (under Taito's approval) and released it on the Genesis Mini, and that version is 100% 68000/Z80 assembly, no ARM C++ nonsense like those 2 "Mark V" games because if that was real Genesis architecture it would've been ported to the MiSTer by now, same with M2's Giga Drive software engine to mimic the Genesis's limitations but with extra background layers for the 3DS and Switch.

Also Bomberman and Bonk will like to have a word with you.

The gore is a selling point to be sure but it wasn't just a gimmick. The gameplay is solid if you like 2D beat-em-ups and it has an excellent soundtrack as well.. I replay it every halloween and it's fun. Except for the level full of aborted fetuses. Fuck that level.

Did you know that later TurboChips that TTi distributed did not have a case? It was just a box, instructions, and a plastic filler caddy. Ninja Spirit came with the system in addition to the Gate of Thunder and Ys1+2, supposedly some got Dungeon Explorer instead.

I only ever played one of it's games because my cousin had one, the only person I ever knew that had one.
I was amazed by it's tiny little card for cartridges but that was mostly all I remember.
Funny thing is that despite all the games I've ever emulated I never once thought to emulate this.

supergrafx was unnecessary imo. hucards' limited rom size and overall lack of AAA development were the bottleneck

most supergrafx games were also 8 megabits. the average hucard was 2-4 megabits

If there's any advice I could give to someone interested in getting a PCE/TG16, it's to get an everdrive or some device that will let you play CD games.
>>
>>12747978
>was it really good game or was it only popular for shock value at the time?
I played it for the first time ever a few months ago. It is pretty simplistic, but it's nice. You feel a good "thwack!" when you hit enemies. The bosses can be a bit challenging, and there is a bit of memorization required to beat the game, but I completed it on my third or fourth try. It doesn't feel unfair, and it demands the player get good. I enjoyed it.
>>
Dungeon Explorer is one of my favorite TG16 games. Especially when played with four other friends, it's an absolute blast. It's so underrated.

Rondo of Blood is probably my favorite TG16 game. Splatterhouse is really good too. Neutopia was nice. Legendary Axe was a bit flawed. Air Zonk was ok, but a little bit boring. Bonk's Adventure was a basic 7/10 platformer. Looking forward to playing more games, like Vasteel, Cadash, Bonk 2, Dungeon Explorer II, etc., etc.

The TG-16 didn't sell especially well in North America but still, somewhere between 1-1.5 million units floating around is enough to have had some presence. If a music album or a book sold a million+ copies you wouldn't think it was weird if people remembered either having one themselves or knowing someone who did.

And there's a bit of selection bias since I would imagine people who browse /vr are more likely to have had one or at least played one than the average person. And not everyone who posts here is American so at least some of the millions of people who bought one in other countries might be contributing to the discussion as well.

And the library was not mostly japanese. It did have a lot of Japan-only exclusives but most of those were niche shit and pretty much everything that had any appeal to westerners got localized, except Rondo for some inexplicable reason.
>>
>>12751663
And some people bought one long after it released, to try out some games on it.

There's always those faggots screeching about how the console's library is nothing but shmups so it's best to emphasize non-shooter games just to pre-empt their retarded (and disingenuous) counterpoints. But I really like R-type so I included it as the representative of the genre

Knowing what I would’ve known as a boy at the time, probably Genesis. With what I know now about the quality of most of those games, I’d pick PCE.
>>
>>12754985
That's fair. I give the nod to the Genesis but mostly because of RoS. Regardless I couldn't blame anyone for picking either of those console in year 1. Some solid games on both sides.

Easily Genesis. I love the TG16, but if it were an album, all of its games would be B-sides

>>

NTA but I understand what he is saying(do not exactly agree either) and it isn’t anything a zoomer reference thats for sure.
>>
>>12755675
It’s something a zoomer would try to reference without actually understanding the context so what they end up saying makes no sense. The term “B-side” in the way he’s trying to use it refers to singles not albums.

Right. From what I gather he is referring to the TG-16 as the album and all the games being not good enough singles for the "A" side so they are relegated to the "B" side. Probably not the best analogy but I can read between the lines.

Another angle not mentioned is the console features and esthetics. TG-16 is fine looking. A little odd but its ok. One controller port tho is unforgivable. Meanwhile the Genesis Model 1 is arguably the best looking console ever made with two controller ports and a stereo head phone jack w/volume slider. So not even factoring in games if I was a kid and only going by what I see then the Genesis would win hands down.

No not really. Its a perfectly serviceable game. Its just not something I would reccomend if trying to sway someone to try out the TurboGrafx-16. Not too mention its been ported to practical every other console so its not even exclusive.

When I was a kid I got paid $100 dollars to go to some building in Itasca and talk about video games with a group of kids. The adults were like "hey what do you think about this idea?" and every idea they presented, from design to characters and types of games, we kids almost unanimously agreed were crappy. A year later I saw the TG16 and was like "hey I recognize that!" and told my parents to buy me a Genesis instead. Dipshits should have fucking listened to us.

Yeah, the default turbo conrrollers were nice. They were light but solidly built, the d-pad was good and built-in turbo switches was maybe a bit of a marketing gimmick but it was also a really convenient feature.

I put heavy mileage on mine and even threw it once or twice in a fit of autistic rage and it never broke. My only gripe is that the cord was too short. I would have liked to try the arcade stick but never could justify the expense to my parents, who were not into video games.
>didn't it come with a controller?
>yes
>It is broken?

>then why do you need another one?
>because the other one has a stick
>....I think you can live without that
