Try as I might I just can't get back into Doom.

Why not? It's super easy for me. Sounds like a you problem

I declare myself the project lead and head composer of this thread

Try some Quake or Duke for a while then. Or maybe some ZDoom gameplay mod.

I have to be in the mood for it, myself. I'm impressed by the guys who can play it every day and never tire, it must be great having that one game you never get sick of.

i forgot Quake doesn't have a use button. I was looking for it in the options for a good 10 minutes

I don't ever get fully sick of Doom, but sometimes I'm drawn to play something else. Be it Dracula X, or Fallout New Vegas. Or Tetris, fucking love Tetris.

Anyway, the Axe is THE most important weapon in Dracula X.

>>
>>12734801
For me, Quake is that game I never get tired of and I've recently worked out why. It's the maps, or potential for them.
Doom has the best combat and even as someone who prefers Quake I can't deny it. The guns and monsters in Doom are so much better.
But the levels in Doom can never be as good as a well designed Quake map. There's no real verticality, it's all trickery and the limitations mean exploration feels hollow for the most part. Default settings mean the monsters and props are infinitely tall and this also feels shitty although I'm compelled to keep the setting on for authenticity and because it's intended.
Basically, I think I like retro FPS games for map exploration more than the actual shooting.

Don’t force it, it’s not going anywhere. I’ve been off and on with it since about 2001 when I found out ZDoom was a thing.
Currently playing through Tremor and non-retro games. When I’m done with Tremor, I’m probably going to finish my modded Eviternity run.

Ill go months or even a year without playing it. Then Ill think about it like once during work and bam Ill be playing it for another few months

Your post made me realise I never fucking finish Doom wads. The last one I ever fully completed was Eviternity and that was years back. Normally I get 15 or so maps in and burn out.

Doom 1 episodes is the superior format. 9 levels is enough for me at least
>>
>>12734780
Where's my MIDI, anon? You said you were a composer.

Doom 2 would have benefited so much from episodes. Add all those cool new monsters, but then slice it up into multiple shorter series of levels, where you start each one fresh.

I have played many which don't and which I love, but it really helps a lot with setting pacing for a full 32 map slammathon.
This is why Scythe 2 did death exits for pseudo episodes back in the day.

i agree, and in this case, it isnt hard to make a decent inventory grid. being lazy and uninspired is just a choice.

reposted as i didnt now the other thread was dead
>>
>>12735238
Even the Serious Sam games do something similar: You’ll hit a ‘halfway’ point and your inventory gets reset, pitting you against trickier encounters compared to the start of the game.
>>
>>12734839
>Default settings mean the monsters and props are infinitely tall and this also feels shitty although I'm compelled to keep the setting on for authenticity and because it's intended

This is so stupid, it's not because it was ''intended'', it was because of tech limitations. Playing without free aim for ''purity'' reasons is just idiotic
>>
>>12735369
>Playing without free aim for ''purity'' reasons is just idiotic
I do it for fun, too, not just because I want to experience a retro game as it was initially played.
>>
>>12734774
Try Marathon.

>>12735045
Same. At, least, as far as megawads go. Something that keeps itself to like 10 maps or whatever? That's fine.
>>
>>12734774
Have you tried mods? Vanilla Doom gets old for me fast, but shoving some entertaining mods in serious ups the enjoyment factor for me.
>>
>>12733929
I recall some old mods could inflate your config file to hell. There was another exploit using log files to overwrite other files in your computer but I don't know if any wads actually used it.
>>
>>12735369
Vast majority of Vanilla/Boom/MBF/MBF21 content is all designed around that, so free aiming and moving over monsters will still be putting you past intended parameters.

Now, whether or not that's a bad thing or not really depends on your circumstances and what you want out of Doom, I've been playing with gameplay mods and shit since the 90s, so I'm no stranger to "breaking the rules," but I'm also very accustomed to the stock limitations and enjoy the core gameplay and physics for what they are.
I'm not one of those people who puts LE DEVELOPER INTENTIONS on a pedestal, nor do I think you would need to play every mapset ever stock, before playing it with a mod, but I still play a lot of stuff like it was published, and enjoy it that way.

You should really be pistol starting anyway. It's how Doom is meant to be played.
>>
>>12735653
>It's how Doom is meant to be played.
The manuals disagree with that statement.
>>
>>12735423
desu as long as people don't act like King Shit Of Fuckmountain about it, I don't mind if people do it for purist reasons.

Bragging rights are reserved for actually being good, ergo you beat some tough level at, or faster, than the record time (and you've got the demo to prove that).
I actually really hope that MBF2y has a separate complevel setting for allowing free aiming, jumping, and moving over and under monsters, because you could make a lot of new(ish) gameplay on that point, and it'd be cool to see the best players record sick demos with that.
>>
>>12735653
Nigger, the manual tells me to save often so that I don't have to lose my shit, and there's a save and load right on the main menu.
I'll do pistol start or continuous at my own fucking discretion, thank you very much.

>Ok, so I know that we let you save and load, and the manual tells you to, and that you always automatically carry over your stuff between levels, and that the only way actually around this at all is when custom levels make death exits in ways we never ever did them in-game ourselves, BUT, you aren't supposed to carry over inventory between levels
>>
I love turning off infinitely tall monsters and crowdsurfing through slaughtermaps I will not stop doing it
>>
>>12735707
Slaughtermaps could outright incorporate that into its intended gameplay design if there was a complevel for it, and it'd rule.
>>
>>12735662
>Bragging rights are reserved for actually being good, ergo you beat some tough level at, or faster, than the record time (and you've got the demo to prove that).
IMO there are plenty of levels whose beating at all is an achievement, regardless of time.
>>
>>12735675
Player psychology is a very funny thing. Though the insistence on pistol starting is a funny one, since all maps were (in theory) made to be possible to beat it when pistol starting, some people have decided that's obviously how it's supposed to be played.

This misses both the shit you pointed out and the fact that if levels weren't possible to beat when pistol starting, then the entire mechanic of starting with only a pistol would be a waste of everyone's fucking time.
>>
>>12735846
There must be a standard for both initial and victory conditions, otherwise it is impossible to discuss and compare the difficulty of different maps. The pistol start is merely the most natural for the former, and 100% completion is the most natural for the latter.
>>
>>12734774
Oh, we are doing Doom therapy session in this thread.
I'm tired of revenants. It started with BTSX a year ago and the frustration never ended. They are unironically destroying any fun I get playing any serious wad. I love their goofy design and animation as the next guy, but it's absolutely obvious that for the last ~400 hours of playtime the revenant is the only monster that irritates me almost in every wad except for classics.
>>
>>12735858
>There must be a standard for both initial and victory conditions
The natural standards are "Whatever the map/wad's default setting is (or whatever the readme says)" and "Getting through the level."

Generally, you shouldn't treat the standard behavior of the game itself as an anomaly that should be disregarded.

For me its the pain elemental. Thinking about it heightens me cause i just have to kill the dopey fuckers before they spawn a screen full of flying skulls whatever they are called

Okay so one guy plays a map and says it's hard. Another plays the same map but brings a soulsphere and 600 plasma cells through intermission, and says it's easy. They proceed to talk past each other and have a stupid, pointless argument.
There must be a standard which everyone agrees on. It doesn't have to be pistol start, but it's easiest and most natural if it is, because it's built into the game engine.
>>
>>12735884

There won't be. Just ignore the stupid, pointless arguments.
>>
>>12735907
>And one day, it will be overwhelmingly positive praise.
I overwhelmingly love Quake! More than Doom, but both constantly change places for me.
>>
>>12735907
>There won't be.
There has to be, otherwise all playtesting reports you receive as a mapper are useless.
>>
>>12735914
Individual reports are 95% useless outside of bug reports anyway because unless you're watching demos or whatever you can never really tell if feedback is coming from a place of massive skill issues, luck, or any of the other factors that should be kept in mind. You just sort of have to go with the trend of reports rather than individual ones.
>>
>>12735774
This would require mapper to account for damage that demons do to the player while he walks on them. The person who could do it and turn it into a reliable system woud be an archwizard of black magic.
>>
>>12735923
I'll bear that in mind next time I feel inspired to write up my impression of playing a map...

This is a vanilla compatible level so you can record demos for it using chocolate/crispy heretic, dsdadoom and derivatives.I just felt like playing Heretic more than Doom today. This individual level has 9 whole demos on the dsdarchive, so I figured it would be worth trying. It's more difficult than the previous Heretic challenge due to low ammo, but this is mitigated considerably once you know where the secrets are, including 2 unmarked morph ova behind some conspicuous statue textures. Watch the demo back if you can't find them. This time should be pretty easy to beat since I forgot a couple enemies near the start.

RE: that conversation last thread about getting bored of Doom. I've spent a lot of time going through that in terms of up and down, and what I found that I wanted from Doom was more enemies and a solid suite of weapons and movement capabilities. There is just something about regular Doom I'm not a fan of, and I reckon it's from the fact that HL1 was my first FPS and not Doom. There's a certain sense of speed and feedback from enemies that vanilla Doom doesn't have. I've fucked with Dakka, I've fucked with Combined Arms, GMOTA, obscure weapon mods every corner possible, and for me, Hellrider Vengeful is what finally did it for me. It goes without saying, this is not vanilla Doom in the slightest. But in terms of
>I want to check out a mappack from 20 years ago and load it up with custom monsters like Colorful Hell or Mega Monster Mix because I love looking at worlds people have created and killing monsters while looking at worlds people have created
then I've got my Doom for life. John Romero said once some time ago that part of Doom's formula is that the player is faster than the monsters, granting a sense of empowerment and control. What HV does for me is creates a nigh permanent state of flow I get to zigzag around killing demons swiftly, but now and then I get stopped by a powerful monster that, if I was too careless, will indeed kill me. Flow, challenge, flow, challenge, infinitely. It's a great time. Doom has "resets", even without pistol start, where the map has to get going again to get into flow. I dislike that downtime greatly. It's also part of why I really dislike Serious Sam: TSE, where Sam's inventory gets reset each chapter change despite TFE not doing this.
>>12735878
>>12735884
Bbbbbbbbbbased. Quake I don't need much. The atmosphere is king. Never could get bored of Quake.
>>
>>12734839
>It's the maps, or potential for them.
Yes, bingo. I also think it's really cool that the custom content over the last 30 years has never ventured far from the dour and dank atmosphere, whereas Doom can be absolutely anything. It's like a more serious Serious Sam, to boot: All the custom content, the serious ones at least, are about fighting another faction of Quake, the ever looming threat just like Mental, the Ranger doomed to keep fighting them forever because the next slipgate takes him to another stronghold of Quake. Wish I had the time to go through it all.
>>
>>12735989
There was also a time where I was playing HL OP4 with a controller on my shitty school laptop while waiting for another teacher's period, and he walked through the corridor i was sitting in, and he stopped and looked at me and said something like "I should give you detention for what you have in your hands." And he paused and went "You're playing a PC fps on a controller? Come on, man..." and before leaving he added "I approve your choice of game though."
God i should try to find him, see what he's up to nowadays.

>>
>>12734801
I get burn out from Doom regularly, but it isn't because of the game itself. It's because of the maps - most of them are too hard for my casual ass.
People make maps for over 30 years and average room temperature for difficulty keep rising. Even if we don't take slaughter maps into account, average map pack of today is much harder than original iwads. They are like on the same level with Plutonia or a bit higher.
I greatly enjoyed Doom 1, Doom 2 too but to a lesser extent because of its confusing maps, but after that point it is a roulette for me of getting either good challenging maps or tortures I can't handle and the latter happens more often. I completed both D1 and D2 on ultra violence, but I'm still weak and too casual to play what mappers currently have to offer even on hurt me plenty. Maybe I just don't think enough and never learn.

Bro... go easy on yourself. If you REALLY beat D1 and D2 on Ultra Violence you need to seriously give yourself a pat on the back because that shit is not by anyone's means easy. I tried to do D1 earlier this year and gave up on E1M7, just couldn't do it without cheats or intense savescumming.

I might if it was strictly vanilla. It's been great seeing a variety of different base mods adding all sorts of needed variety.
>>12735996
>I also think it's really cool that the custom content over the last 30 years has never ventured far from the dour and dank atmosphere, whereas Doom can be absolutely anything.
A big reason I liked Mjolnir so much is the tone it emphasized: It still had some 'dark' aesthetics, but the mood was much different - even occasionally uplifting - compared to standard Reznor-tracked Quake vibes. AD Tears is another stand-out example even if it's only one map.
>>
>>12736050

Ah that's fair. I cannot lie, I usually play vanilla Quake maps with a modifier; Drake, AD Chaos Mode, Copper Nightmare, Zerstorer because of that sweet shotgun, etc.

>There needs to be a standard way to play a map in order to be able to discuss it online.
I think a wide variety of ways to approach a map is what makes the online discussion interesting. Most Quake and Doom levels are balanced around multiple skill settings and ways to play them, and the "standard" varies by map author.
Partially related: I was testing stuff on vanilla Quake and found out this whole upper balcony is gone on skill 0 and 1.

Been doing some solo testing. Two ways to do this, I think the second way is best for the moment:

1. ZDL + UZDoom, which can be cumbersome to say the least. Host + client matches mod order, ZDL points to UZDoom, ZDL needs
>-showlauncher
as a parameter for the sourceport menu, and boom, you're in.

2. Command line parameters
This will get annoying when you do longer mod lists. Need to move every host mod into the same directory as uzdoom.exe, then you type out the load order in the Additional Parameters bar, copy and paste that to clients, and you're in.

UZDoom in the long run will absolutely need a Doomseeker style launcher because people are lazy and will not be inclined to do either of these things when Doomseeker exists. But for Zdoom exclusive mods, say, playing some Babel multiplayer deathmatch or co-op, Project Brutality, GMOTA + the latest Corruption Cards, what have you, UZDoom is the way to go.

I never played GZDoom multiplayer, so this doesn't strike me as something GZDoom wasn't capable of. Was GZDoom multiplayer unstable or something? I've seen webms of people playing HD together, so it wasn't impossible to play GZDoom multiplayer together.

It's time for Wednesday Night Wipeout!
Come play some SRB2Kart!

How to join (The short and easy way):
Download the All-in-one repack: https://mega.nz/file/3dUUWTbR#Ir3l9U2JAKSdT84wQwbKsgQ1Go39xdCCznpF2ChCgmc
Extract it to its own folder (NOT the desktop or program files)

Don't punish the anons who post work here due to the words of one autistic retard. Only the most self-centered of motherfucker mappers will say that they don't value feedback. Even if it's just "this map is fun" or "this map is confusing."

However, speaking as that autistic retard, the point with that was more an answer to that specific person's nonsense where they were saying that it's impossible to get good feedback if you don't decide pistol starting is the defacto way or whatever the fuck. All feedback is a useful data point, but most people do bake in a lot of assumptions or otherwise don't say how they approach things to make it more helpful. As such, most of the time, mappers/modders have to sort of wing it and go off the pictures the sum of feedback paints rather than addressing individual write ups. Good write ups that do stuff like explain how they go through a map and all that stuff are a treasure that seemingly not even 1% of players bother with.

I wonder if Nightdive will do any big changes like with Heretic and Hexen. Maybe make the game more linear, eschewing the open world stuff? Will we get an expansion like the other remasters? Very curious choice, but Wolf 2009 isn't on storefronts while every other one is, so it lines up.

Still wanted RTCW though.

Honestly I was thinking if its an Id Tech 4 thing to tackle first it'd be Quake 4, since it's Quakes 30th anniversary this year. That expansion got leaked, people are aching for more Quake, and the remasters for those games were excellently done and recieved; it'd make sense to tackle that one next. But hey, if Wolf 2009 gets the same treatment I'm all for it.

I've been mulling over a potential Quake 3 remaster and I keep thinking "Will anyone actually play this past a month or two"? I know that one is highly regarded but there's no proper campaign, and nowadays arena shooters just aren't all that popular. Quake 4 meanwhile has both, and like you said there is room for improvement (Removing reloads, making the player faster, altering the levels to be less Doom 3).

Even if they speed it up or something to make it play better, I'm still never getting over all the terrible (re-)designs and overall 'Doom 3 but worse' aesthetic.
Quake 2 had a lot of cool looking designs that would have looked great with more polygons and modern shaders. Everything in Quake 4 is just uninteresting visual sludge by comparison.

Definitely looks the most like the classic Q2-era Strogg. I'm kinda partial to the Berserker though, having a metal body with skin draped on top like a coat of arms is pretty freaky. I will agree that Quake 4's Strogg are kinda lacking in some areas; too many humanoids in comparison to the wide range of shit you saw in Quake 2.
>>
>>12736378
Man they could do so much more with them, and they're already perfectly positioned to do so. For instance: There is no good reason the universe expansive empire of the Combine are wasting time leaving an occupying force made up of those being occupied. If you went up the chain of command all the way to the Advisor level, and you asked what it was thinking, you wouldn't get a good reason.

But with Quake, the higher you go, the antagonist can just be batshit crazy and say something like
>ALL THINGS CAN BE CONJOINED. ORGANIC, STEEL, AND COMPUTER. JOIN OR DIE
and then he laughs:
https://youtu.be/w5ygNf67d4w?t=177

Quake 4, with the emphasis on gore and a crazy Makron who just loves being evil, makes it so Quake 5 can have so much fun, but not in a tongue-in-cheek way. Just crazy, gorey shit that takes itself seriously like a Paul Veerhoven film.

What's your conclusions on the Sandy's recent SOLDoom venture, the ones deeper than the surface "button-mashing monkey sweatshop" facet of it?

Would he manage to at least afford a cheeseburger from it? I'm not particularly old, but even so, I have no idea how crypto works. Sounds like fake money out of the thin air, there's got to be something undisclosed beneath this.

Supposedly he, or someone else, also intends to make some levels for it. I wonder if it would be possible to nip those straight out of browser in readable WAD format.
>>
>>12736482
It uses your gpu for companies and they reward you for it. Like a good scammer, of course Sandy doesn't tell you, how the game uses your gpu, but lures you in with free money. Still not seeing how this is supposed to bring him a profit bigger than pocket change. Guess dozens of GTX 960s across the SA went on fire this week to afford a scooter for some aspiring entrepreneur, because this is certainly not Sandy's pitch. Maybe he is bored at the old age? I went for his social media and all the interactions were so fake, so that cooled off my expectations of any genuine Doom content... speaking of:

I've been playing Eye Juice and it was fairly decent for the first quarter of maps, even awe-inspiring, but then its author seems to have begun hyperfocusing on distinct visual settings and gimmicky set pieces instead of gameplay. I was completely bored by the Half-Life homage. Intentional or not, the Helltrain (Epic) throwback was pretty nice though. It's the only time the wad somewhat gets back "on track" before venturing into killing singular fodder in-between of crossing distances. Some maps are so toothless on enemies, it feels like the wad is raw and unfinished. Maybe I'll get back to it some day, soon.

That's so fucking depressing. Either he's truly going senile, or he's just become so cynical and uncaring that it's equally tragic.

This makes me think of that old scam where you'd install a program which would put up ads in your browser (so, adware), and the premise was that you'd get paid for using it, so you'd get paid money just passively while you were browsing. Passive money for nothing, bro? You'd be a fool to not do it! And then the actual payout for this was the tablescraps of tablescraps, you'd use it for hours and hours, days, and barely make a bit of pocket change.

It's the same kind of scam, nobody is going to pay you an actual salary for this shit, the people running this shit will pocket all profits and give you crumbs for doing work for them.
I wonder if it would be better or worse if he was bribed to do this, because at least if they just exploit him going senile, he would at least not be knowing better.

You should play the Marathon trilogy, the maps there all feel like they are much more geared towards exploration than the action we have come to associate with retro FPS games thanks to Doom and Quake.
Summary so you know what you're getting into:
>Marathon - the first one, so the most uneven, with more than its fair share of cryptic albeit usually unintended bullshit, a lot maps that are mazes for the sake of being mazes, home to a map so notoriously bullshit it warranted an apology from the devs
>Marathon: Durandal - has a stronger focus on action, but is still full of odd paths and hidden areas, much better consistency and level design
>Marathon: Infinity - the last one therefore home to the peak of level design in the trilogy, considerably harder than MD, full of cryptic bullshit (intentionally and well-executed this time), will melt your brain if you start trying to piece its narrative together

I don't want to turn this general into a Marathon clues board, but let's just say there's a reason people still talk about its story.

It was a test wad when Woof and Odamex were implementing their MBF21 so rest assured it's supported well (and of course in dsda)

It's the only wad I would recommend to play continuous instead than pistol-starting, it resets you every 5 levels anyway but you get to use cool weapon for 1-2 levels in each episode as a reward. Use saves, don't bother with 100% secrets but always go for secret levels because they're very much worth it. Also consider playing with -coop_spawns, it adds new monsters. And playing it in coop is even better!

It's archetypes and meaning transposed to our lives, friendo. The Ranger ever trying go home is akin to Sisyphus. It's the every day you go to work, the every day you get up but don't feel like it. All against the truly scrumptious backdrop of dark medieval fantasy and sci-fi.

Most of them kill each other, most of the remainder can be cleaned up with area damage weapons, and/or go down in one/two double shotgun blasts. 400 monsters in Doom isn't really much, 5 or 10 minute completion at most.
>>

>>12737957

>>
>>12737953
>They built off it and improved everything
Everything? Quake's weapons are shit. Shotgun is a peashooter, Doom's chaingun was underpowered so let's give you two of them with some stadium rock crooner's branding slapped all over them and have the second eat ammo so quickly you can never use it, grenades with bouncing mechanics please save that for turn-based strategy games where I can spend lots of time planning the best angle, it doesn't work at all in fast paced shooters, and the lightning gun is just retarded shit. There's one good weapon, the rocket launcher. Shooter/FPS games live and die by how the weapons feel and Quake's weapons are utter fucking dross.
>>
>>12737976
>grenades are too difficult to use
And I thought I was slow.
>>
>>12737976
>dross
Not only are you British but...
>stadium rock
...you're also a fucking idiot. The nailgun feels way better and almost incomparable to Doom's chaingun.
If you need to think that hard about trying to bounce a grenade off of an angle you've also probably (somehow) never played a sport in your life.
>>
>>12737976
You're only correct about the shotguns. I hate Quake's shotguns, they feel too weak and Arcane Dimensions fixed this by giving you a third option that upgrades and replaces the SSG into a triple barreled gun that feels like a REAL SSG.
However, I can't agree on the rest.
The nailgun feels badass and much better than the Doom chaingun. The super version is an utter monster and I cannot understand why you would think it's underpowered.
The grenade launcher is fun as fuck and Doom has nothing like it. The rocket launcher is also better than Dooms by far since it has actual power, splash damage actually means something in a 3D environment, and you can rocket jump. In Doom it may as well be a rifle.
The thunderbolt is basically the plasma rifle and I feel you don't get it enough/get much ammo but otherwise it's good. I will say Quake needed a BFG equivalent. Doom certainly beats it for that.
>>
>>12737941
https://litter.catbox.moe/zefskd.zip

If you want the Hunting Rifle and Scissors to spawn you'll have to reenable those and the ammo in Spawners, in Decorate/Player and Items, and then all the stuff I did to Heretic and Hexen monsters are in their Filters in the Decorate files and a few MapInfo changes.

Episodes 4 and 5 in Heretic might be a bit much with those changes. I didn't play them with this.
>>
>>12738000
>a BFG equivalent
And then Q2 came out, with a BFG that BTFO every single BFG-like gun that was ever made before or after it.
>>
>>12738001
Actually I forgot, Hexen monster changes were just in its patch in ZScript, but it was just to remove the NOBLOOD flag from three of them.
>>
>>12738010
Now this is bait. The Quake 2 BFG is well known for being underpowered and the worst version of the gun to date. I know Doom's version had janky code but the Quake 2 BFG did fuck all damage.
>>
>>12738013
I have the issue with the alt hud, is their a fix for that?

This map feels like it could use more ammo. I get a Berserk pack, but A), most of the Specters immediately get wasted by the barrels anyway, B), that's not great for Hell Knights in these spaces, and C), outright unusable on Mancubodes unless you use improved hit detection. Not a great prospect for three Revenants at once with little to no cover either.

Can't get deep into it at this point cuz waging tomorrow but it'll open on Ironwail 0.8.0 with the new music, not on Nightdive's port naturally, but Map 1 had an awkward moment where I seemed to teleport between one area and another in an early section. Text is borked as others have mentioned. Idk, I'll mess around with it tomorrow but just having it is nice. Hopefully the gog version will be updated soon.

I was being a downer the last few threads about what we'd see, so to be wrong and get a neat little new Quake episode is quite a delight.
Been going back and forth between playing the new episode through KexQuake and FTEQW.
>>
one thing that annoys me about kex quake and quake 2 is they ignore basically like half of quakes legacy by just completely neutering the multiplayer aspect. No custom skins, no multiplayer mods. I am thankful for all the new single player content, but I wish Todd would throw us fraggers a bone. No reason kex couldn't have had a server browser in addition to the p2p lobbies for cross platform.
>>
>>12738769
I just don't understand why they need Kex shit tacked on to rape the performance and add input lag.
These engine are open source, so wtf does Kex even do that they can't just add into the engine directly?
>>
>>12738703
You're supposed to jump down to a platform after going through the doors anon.
>>
>>12738790
Probably so that it's easier to port to consoles and keep each version in parity with the other. Future proofing.
>>
>>12738831
anon is saying they could have done that without the kex shit as quake is incredibly modular it was ported to PSP back when that was popular. They did it to have more control but just made it shittier by cutting what were core features like basically everything Quakeworld. Its not like Quakeworld was just this minor footnote in this history of quake.

Seems like a pretty good time to start practicing with how the 30th anniversary has got eyes on it.

The only way to get better at mapping is to map, and it provides a good excuse for playing more quake!
>>
>>12738887
Agreed that it would be cool to have those but it would be a logistical nightmare
>probably couldnt even get contact with their creators (example airquake's creator keranen hasn't been in contact with any fps communities for almost 30 years)
>all of those need heavy bugfixing since even quakespasm has problem with some of those
>team fortress is registered franchise these days, owned by valve
>>
>>12738910
yeah I understand those limitations but theres a thousand ways around it since they own all the expansion assets and everything nothing to stop them from making their own class based shooter it didnt have to be team fortress necessarily. I know mods are their own legal mess too but I mean they could have at least given us something. Like add unreal like mutators to quake, or let people make their own games like they kind of tried to do with snapmap on doom 2016. I think that kind of thing works much better with a game like quake and helps people not too familiar with modding do something cool. They need to do that with doom too, like heres a bunch of weapon assets, some pre-made sectors, go fuckin nuts build your own mods with their creation kit. That would be cool and todd isnt cool.

As long as we're posting Quake stuff, I've been on and off continuing my porting of Drake content to Violent Rumble 2 because VR2 has lots of features I wish Drake had, even lots of features I wish Keep / Mjolnir and AD had. Plus I really like Drake's monsters. It's been rather hellish but I have the Dark Lord, the final boss of Unforgiven, ported to VR2, feature complete. 4 monsters down (Warlord, Hellhound, Axeman, Dark Lord), 62 more to go.

No.

>MODDING CHANGES
Localization strings are now stored in the Quake PAK, instead of outside the game data in the KPF file. Third party engines that previously read strings from the KPF file will need to be updated to read from the PAK file and should no longer need to load the KPF file at all

Mods can optionally add new mod-specific localization by overriding localization/loc_(language)_mod.txt in their PAK files

LMAO that's such an obvious lie. KEX Quake new episodes were made (mostly) by an actual old-school mapper from 90's who has nothing to do with modern Quake community.
KEX Doom/Heretic new episodes were made by active members of the modern Doom community.

Apart from the myriad of media which portrays loners as weirdos, outcasts and usually the criminal/villian/antagonist, plus there's that little thing of humans evolving to be social. Being a loner has never been seen as "cool", "with it", or "where it's at" in the entirety of human history, and you're being thoroughly disingenuous if you are arguing otherwise.

On one map you can find a grave for a mappers pet cat. It's probably just a little memorial to it.

It's not EVERY level, but it's a lot of them. From the couple I found, they seemed to be easier to come across than the normal exit. I assume that's why I missed out on runes. I only got one at the very end. When you finish the last level, you get sent to a hub that acts as a level select for the remaining runes.
>>

I installed it recently, and it looks and performs great, but found it extremely difficult.

Just finished Dawn of the Machine on Nightmare. I thought it was decent but the levels are so large they can overstay their welcome at times. The highs are high with it and the lows are mind numbingly boring doublebarrel slogs. I think this time around there were multiple mappers involved because there's less tightly focused gameplay and the difficulty / length of levels shifts between each. The second to last level is really, really easy. I only went back through a handful of maps after I finished to see what some of the runes do but I didn't find much other than more upgrades, but I know some of the new weapons are in it. I thought the final boss was neat.
>>
>>12741057

This is a lie. Phobos' performance is garbage because it's using far more dynamic lights than the engine was ever expecting.

I also wanted to add to the Nightmare mode part: the health upgrades nullify the 50-health cap that Nightdive's remaster has since you can eventually upgrade your health past 100 if you get enough of them. I finished the game with 130 health and I imagine if I looked for more secrets that 200 health is possible. They did, however, add the classic Nightmare mode as an option if you find it via the secret exit on 'Of Shattered Minds' which I didn't try since it's so late into the game to unlock it, but I assume stacks onto the new Nightmare mode.

Most useless thing ever and the fact that a main reason for it is "lore" is even dumber.
Just the fact that those flashback sequences in TDA using D4 assets and having a Spec Ops The Line tier story felt like they picked up the supposed setting of classic Doom and make it a generic milsim shooter that the "Slayer games" were thought to avoid being like.
The "expanded Doom universe" is done better in some mods, wads and Realm667 assets.
>>12741018
I don't trust a D3 remake because I know it'll be made with its worst critics in mind, so they'll get rid of the interesting designs and add shit unrelated to its actual goals, while also probably not fixing its actual issues.
All it needs is a proper re-release that does what BFGE and others should have done.

Genuinely, which ones. I'm curious what people consider wads that are both distinct and good.

Also, as someone who generally prefers stuff that's just a variation of something I already like (autistic whatever), I feel like the phenomenon you describe is kind of the point of modding. If people wanted to be truly original, they'd make their own games. If you like the core gameplay of doom, then slight deviations is most of what you'd want.
>>
>>12741073

>>
>>12742258
So far no, not the 1-2 maps, those 12 in particular are all achievable. The runes are for "re-plays" as I understand. I couldn't get the axe in the room at the bottom you can see through the crack in the wall, and the health upgrade behind the door to the right of you just when you start the level, couldn't get it either. But those 12, I found them all, nothing too crazy but nicely done.
>>
>>12742258
Yeah, I think so. The runes are meant to be some new game + feature, I'm probably near the end and haven't found a single rune yet, so I assume they're either well hidden or you get them all fairly quickly later. Then again I only found one secret level and supposedly there's about six of those.

>Donna Jackson, also known as the "id mom" and "Miss Donna", is the long-time office manager of id Software. She was hired onto the company in January 1994[1] when the id guys found themselves in need of someone to keep their workspace functional while they focused on game development. According to David Kushner, she had her job cut out for her as "office destruction" became a sport amongst Adrian Carmack, Kevin Cloud, and John Romero.[2]
