How did Sony come to dominate the gaming industry? What went so right here?
you mean wrong, they ruined videogames
Because it was the first console for adults and made nintoddlers like >12740334 shit and piss their pantsAlso, everything in its ecosystem was way cheaper than the competition.

Early 90s the market opened up and Nintendo was losing its stranglehold 3rd parties, technology was quickly advancing into areas Nintendo had no first hand experience with, and they were taking their time making a new system.Sega had shit the bed with hardware add-ons, East-West disagreements, and planned a new system that would be sprite-based because that was all their console devs knew how to handle despite the arcade team raking in money with cutting edge 3D success stories.Sony had a respected brand, motivation from being spurned by Nintendo breaking a collaboration in a shameful way, personal technology experience and industry contacts, a modern and cheap media format they were a leading producer of, boatloads of cash they could throw at developers and publishers and promoters, and a global distribution and production network ready to go. They decided to go for it and targetted 3D games.Their system came out early, was next-gen despite not being the absolute top-shit, devs loved it because it was cheap and simple, and customers loved it because there were plenty of good games that catered to nearly everybody. It had mortally wounded Saturn by the end of '96, and already had a humongous foothold over Nintendo who wouldn't even get the console out in Europe until spring '97. Sega couldn't pull the same early trick with the DC because the PS2 killed it by simply being eagerly awaited on the horizon by millions.New titles and early 5/5 sequels like GTA3, Silent Hill 2, MGS2, THPS3, Gran Turismo 3, would cement PS2 into an unassailable lead they would continue to build on until non-/vr/ lunacy occurs, it all burns down, and Sony America salts the Earth.tldr: Sony stood on the shoulders of giants, kicked their arses at their own game, ruled for a while, then shit themselves, and the only good vidya is /vr/.

They owned the CD pressing factories and were able to sell hardware at a huge loss and also burn a lot of money on marketing. It's also weird seeing presumably Sony fans trying to get antagonic with "tendies" (I imagine this is a neo /v/ console war thing?).Nintendo is still doing hardware and publishing their games, the company that got nuked by Sony is Sega (they even alluded to that on Segata Sanshiro's final commercial)

>>12740328Why don't you read the book you posted?Anyways, one underrated factor is that Sony was already a publishing and distribution juggernaut. They could get a new product into every electronics store & department store on earth in an instant. Nintendo and Sega, especially outside of US/Japan were pretty much just luxury toy brands, Sony was the biggest electronics company on earth.

>>12740937Sony was pretty much one tier of age demographic ahead of everyone else. Sega got ahead of Nintendo by marketing at 12 year olds instead of 8 year olds, then Sony got ahead of both of them by marketing at 16 year olds while Sega and Nintendo refused to give up their positions. And as it turns out, the cultural influence you get by being a hip product for young adults greatly eclipses what you can achieve by being a children's toy.

>>12740958>especially since DualShockI guess retroactively, yes. but it was a shot in the dark, no? it was barely used in the ps1, and developers still stumbled with it for a generation or 2 until they settled on the best use of dual sticks for 3rd and 1st person gamesanyway, it wouldn't have made a difference in the success of the playstation>Better gamesit's just this, really. saturn went hard on arcade conversions at a time when people wanted very different experiencesthey even doubled down on it with the dreamcastit's funny how arcade conversions were so important for a couple of generations previously
>>12740334You mean how come AI trainning?
>>12740328>Good graphics/sound>Library was extremely diverse with something for literally everyone>Great Homebrew/Modding/Piracy scene
>>12740328Everything is explained in the book you posted a photo of... The arrival of 3D was driven by the fact that Sony marketed it much more heavily than Sega did. Royalties were set at $7, whereas Nintendo was asking for $13. The ease and flexibility of CD production made things convenient for third-party publishers (whereas Sega, even with the Mega-CD and Saturn, applied the same logic used for cartridges). The console's price compared to Sega's. The price of games compared to Nintendo's.
>>12740328A lot of things came together, basically.Sony had the financial stability to offer developers very generous terms for developing for the Playstation as a priority, over the Saturn and N64. So they did. The PS1 quickly had more games on the horizon and a constant stream of exciting game news, while the Sega and Nintendo magazines of the time were near-constantly having to make excuses for cancelled games and empty schedules (check out the uploads of Sega Saturn Magazine here if you don’t believe me). Also, in the previous gen, a new game was eye-wateringly expensive, and Sega and Nintendo weren’t shy about gouging you for as much as they possibly could. With the PS1 and CDs, Sony effectively HALVED the price of a new game. With their Platinum line, that price halved again, and 2nd hand games were even cheaper. That’s really important - parents no longer had to sweat about the cost of buying games for their kids, which was a huge deal up until then. Plus, the Sony brand was still synonymous with high-end, top-tier consumer tech, and the PS1 was affordably cheap within a few years. And their kids actually wanted a PS1, so everyone was a winner. I got my PS1 for Christmas ’97, all my friends did too, and I’ve never seen my parents so excited about a present they’d bought me. They had a Christmas party a few days later, and I kept hearing other ‘grown-ups’ talking about how good buying the PS1 was - it was honestly like Sony had liberated a generation of parents from financial racketeering. Also, 3D graphics, marketing, etc.

But before the generation was over Sony had managed to win over all the major name 3rd party devs like Capcom, Konami, Square/Enix, Namco/Bandai, EA, THQ, etc.
>>12740328Nintendo used to "audit" developers randomly to make sure they were using expensive Silicon Graphics dev kits instead of the cheap shitty Doctor v64, which had a parallel port on the back of it and could be linked up to regular computers. Devs hated having to hide their shit every time Nintendo sent their people and since Sony didn't give a shit a lot of them developed for that console instead.
>>12741168>>12741171Nintendo in particular detested third party developers. The Famicom was meant to be a console purely for their own games before Namco reverse engineered it and released games without Nintendo's consent.

>>12744043Sony tried to fuck with nintendo before there was any "betrayal".

Sony was already a MIPS customer, mind you, with NeWS. They provided the technical basis for the Nintendo Playstation, with input from Nintendo and MIPS which was already starting to become SGI at that point.
>>12744152What? It was sony that demanded they have world wide licensing power of all super disc games.
>>12744173Yes, all the cart games would remain licensed by Nintendo, all the disc games by Sony, all games that would use both would be split.
>>12740328Sega fucked the pooch with their geberal incompetence, internal rivalry, waste of resources, over-ordering of every product for sale that left warehouses full of waste, devaluing their own brand and customer loyalty through a dozen different abandoned expensive and short lived console expansions & systems, throwing enough developers under the bus they were blacklisted by most dev teams by the late 90s.Nintendo dropped the ball with the outrageous monetization (something like only single digit percentage of sales went back to the developers of their games), refusal to ship out dev kits for the n64 to those willing to get fucked up the ass financially, cartridge based limitations in a cd world, a console that was so ass backwards development was a struggle, and price in general since the cartridges caused the final price for consumers to hit nearly $100 a pop on some titles.Meanwhile Sony's console was dirt fucking cheap to work with, the system was easier than the competition to develop for, dev kits were readily available, the profit margin on disc sales were great, the leadership and overhead you had to deal with was welcoming and not in any way overbearing unlike nintendo & sony, and it was no surprise at all they won that generation.
>>12744210Yeah thats insane for an addon to MY console. I wouldn't take that deal either.

>>12740328They did their homework to appeal to what all devs wanted in each region.>JapanDevs simply wanted a more powerful Super Famicom that could handle 3D graphics and CD's.>USDevs wanted a better version of the 3DO that didn't have shitty devkits, shovelware, and expensive hardware.>EuropeDevs wanted something to fill the niche left by the Amiga after Commodore went bankrupt, since IBM Clone PC's could not easily hook up to a normal TV out of the box like an Amiga could and were way more expensive.
>>12744958An add-on where you're contributing none of the new hardware, didn't develop the storage medium, aren't responsible for Worldwide printing or distribution, and are still getting paid from all hardware and software sales, plus still retaining licensing control on all games using carts even those that utilise the add-on?Enjoy your alternate deal with Phillips where you surrender the use of your biggest IPs, something that wasn't on Sony's agenda.

>>12746069>make your own machine
>>12746081And thats basically how it happened.
There were so many consoles entering into the '5th generation' market that ended up being complete duds. All Sony had to do was to make a somewhat competent game console that was easy for developers to make games on at a reasonable launch price.
>>12746092>giving the gameboy a worse score than the fucking cdi
>>12746108>>giving the gameboy a worse score than the fucking cdiEGM made these buyer guides yearly back then, and their console review scores only count for 1994 in this case. In 1994 the GameBoy had a pretty lack luster year outside of maybe Donkey Kong and the release of the Super Game Boy. But all the same, I could not imagine that the Philips CDi had an amazing year in 1994 either, with its' best game being Burn Notice. It was a bit weird that someone gave it an 8. The 32x was still a brand new add-on when they wrote up their review scores. It did have a pretty good launch line-up of games.
>>12741175And still, Nintendo has always kept their "secret sauce" to themselves. That's the reason of why Nintendo first-party games always look better than everything else.

>>12747873>The "game gear ate up batteries" meme is from the internet and based on the fact that game gear used 6 and game boy used 4. Complete non-issue.As someone who had access to both an OG brick GameBoy and a GameGear back in 1991, this was far from a meme. The early model GameGear's have this florescent light bulb that could chew through a fresh pack of six AA batteries in less than 5 hours. It was honestly quite frustrating, and I almost had to play this thing exclusively with just a AC power cable. Sega could have probably tripled the battery life by putting in a toggle switch to turn this off. Replacing this bulb with a modern LED screen reduces the batter life by a wide margin.
>>12748648>Sega could have probably tripled the battery life by putting in a toggle switch to turn this off.The screen probably wasn’t designed to be played without a backlight. The Lynx II had a button to turn off its backlight, but you can’t actually play games in that state, it’s just to conserve battery while you take a piss without having to shut the game off entirely. Still a handy feature though.

The problem with screen replacements for the original GameGear is finding a suitable replacement for the 160 × 144 wide pixel display. It has the same resolution as the GameBoy, but the pixels are like 20% wider.

>>12750074really..? prove it... where can i buy one of these brazilian master systems??
>>12750462>>12750512Well, it was a matter of royalties. For starters, Sony was already supplying the sound chips for the SNES, which was a significant factor. The contract for the SNES PlayStation was negotiated by lawyers from both companies; neither Yamauchi, the Sony president, Miyamoto, nor Kutaragi were present. Consequently, it was no longer a standard supplier contract. The Sony team viewed themselves as Nintendo's partners and secured a deal that was far too favorable to them—in fact, the author explains in the book Revolutionnaries At Playstation, that even Ken Kutaragi himself couldn't believe it! In 1993, Nintendo's royalty rate was $19 per game. Sony had secured $21 per CD (games, Video CDs, karaoke)—on top of Nintendo's $19—plus control over game production, and so on. Yamauchi read the contract later, realized the problem, and cancelled the deal. Later on, when Ken Kutaragi took over the PlayStation project, the royalty rate was set at $7.50.

>>12752776they didn't use any of that space for anything important, anon. the ps1 only has 2MB of memory. that shit is exclusively for cd quality audio and FMV slop.
>>12752776>Anons ITT made great points, but CDs were the linchpin to Sony's success. That was more about how stupidly expensive the cartridges' fees were.>inb4 CDs are cheaper by defaultTrue, but even then, Nintendo still put horrible fees and conditions to their cartridges that it was a pain in the ass to deal with them. And worse if you wanted your cartridge to have one of the special chips from them, thus the reason of why almost no one used them and only first-party games used those.
>>12752776>>12753412Jaguar CD, Sega CD, 3DO, Turbografix CD, Sega Saturn, PC-Engine FX also huge success thanks to CD format

>>12753421Sega is actually a perfect example of this. With the Genesis, they operated in the same way as Nintendo. That meant using cartridges that were expensive to produce. Production took a long time—at least a month. There was a requirement to order a minimum of 30,000 cartridges. And royalties were high; Nintendo’s were $19, while Sega—to attract third-party developers—asked for "only" $18. And when Sega switched to CDs, what did they do? Nothing. They didn't change their business model at all. So, that was the situation publishers faced with Sega... ...whereas with Sony, the royalty was $7.50, and you could order as few as 5,000 CDs with a turnaround time of just one week. That meant far greater flexibility and, above all, significantly less financial risk. Yet both Sega and Sony had CD technology. But Sega remained stuck in the cartridge era.
>>127534363do had $3 royalties
>>12753439For whom? Bandai, Goldstar, etc., didn't make any money from the games, which forced them to sell their consoles for $700.
>>12753421https://youtu.be/v-IKag_kU3s?si=unLznXfWTnozFVmo And what about load times and RAM usage? Early CD players had incredibly long load times. That was the reason Yamauchi (Nintendo) was against the CD format. Then Sony came along and cut load times in half. That’s when Yamauchi decided he wanted the SNES PlayStation. But when Nintendo turned to Philips (co-inventor of the CD), their CD player was still very slow. Their CD-i took 30 seconds just to load a JPEG... So, what was the landscape like before the PlayStation? Players were very slow, very expensive, and developing games for them was very complicated for third-party developers. The CD brought quite a few advantages. Only Sony knew how to capitalize on them.
>>12746092I think Sony having the advantage of being one of the few primary manufacturers of CDs helped in cutting costs to third parties. Developers benefit from the lower licensing fees, and the lower manufacturing costs allowed for Sony to undercut and subsidize lower prices to game players.
>>12740328Because of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82Gh8xrLUzISega Japan couldn't handle the reality that their hired gaijin was better than them and chose to destroyed the company.
>>12754076>their hired gaijinLiterally who?
>>12754405My uncle after miyamoto fired him.
>>12754076This is gaijin apologism. SoA's obsession with keeping the Genesis relevant until the end of time is what caused the rift in the first place.
>>12754960The Gaijins should have won the "Dreamcast Wars" with their Black Belt proposal. Imagine a Dreamcast with a PowerPC CPU and a 3Dfx Voodoo GPU. Pure sex.
>>12741173>Nintendo used to "audit" developers randomly to make sure they were using expensive Silicon Graphics dev kits instead of the cheap shitty Doctor v64This always makes laugh. N64 devkits were so shit some devs had to use some illegal hardware mods that were better and even more reliable than the official thing and to compensate for the lack of official tools.

>>12743015>>12744154Sony NEWS was a top tier platform. I wish it lasted longer.
None of the PS1 games have as much soul or control as well as the N64 heavy hittersI can still play mario64 and mario kart64 today and it feels magical (felt truly magical back then)Ps1 "heavy hitters" are all janky and soulless. The only thing ps1 did better was fighting games like Tekken 3
>>12753436This is a very big part of it. Another side of this is Sony was a much bigger company than Sega. They had enough cash on hand to completely fail in the video game industry and still exist. I think people don't get how utterly huge Sony was. When they pitched a CD console to Nintendo in 1991 they were selling VHSs of a best picture winning movie and doing much better in the film industry over all, while already dominating in music field. They were ripe to become a giant media empire.
>>12755496>They had enough cash on hand to completely fail in the video game industry and still existNot necessarily. Warner was also a media empire but they mismanaged Atari so badly it nearly bankrupted the whole group.
>>12740478pretty much nailed it.the main thing missing is that >Nintendo was losing its stranglehold 3rd partiesThis very much understates the point when it comes to 5th gen. Nintendo's policies were downright hostile to 3rd party devs. Only the most dedicated and loyal 3rd parties were willing to tolerate their abuse. They got away with it in the 80s and early 90s because the alternatives were very limited. They had a effective monopoly with the NES and during 4th gen the bar for console development was high no matter which platform you targeted.>>12741096>>12741171exactly
