I beat a link to the past using a walkthrough

I don’t enjoy anything before N64/PSX. They’re just too old and primitive with bad graphics. And 75% of N64/PSX is the same
>>
I've begun collecting physical PS1 games. I got 30 now.
I've not finished a single one and most of them are still unplayed. My wife keeps hogging the console and playing Harvest Moon instead.
>>
>>12747847
You did not beat the game my son
>>
>>12747867
Nah I replayed it like 20 years later when the remaster came out and I did it properly since I could actually tie the clues together.
>>
>>12747792
I have never beaten a single Zelda, Resident Evil or Silent Hill game.
>>
>>12747792
If you used save states, guides or rewind, you didn't beat the game.
Not only you cheated the game, but also yourself.
You brag about your "achievements" to others, yet deep down you know that it was all fake.
You didn't experience anything, the challenge, the frustration, the overcoming, improving your skills. You just took a glimpse of what the game has to offer, the same level as "beating a game watching someone else beat it on YouTube".
Even a crown made with fake gold, still shines from far away.
You cheated not only the game, but yourself.
You didn't learn.
You didn't improve.
You took a shortcut and gained nothing.
You experienced a hollow victory.
Nothing was risked and nothing was gained.
It's sad that you don't know the difference.

I bought an analogue 3D and 4 controllers.

Here's a few.
I enjoy the ocarina of time randomizer. I do use the fast forward when moving around because the game is a slog. I've always talked about how Metal Gear Solid 2 is the best game in the series. That's because my friend hated it so I used to talk about how good it is all the time. I know nothing about it, I didn't even know you don't play as solid snake til maybe 2015 at the earliest and I've been doing this since it came out. Including online, if you talked to someone here who sails mgs2 was the best and avoided talking about why that is there's a chance it was me. I barely played the 1st 1, everyone loved it but I thought it was gay. I had to look up what to do at 2 points in Grim Fandango. 1 had something to do with the car and it turned out my logic was right I just wasn't clicking the right spots I needed to click. Another was later and I would have never beaten the game if I didn't look it up so I cheated myself of the experience. Oh well, game was just ok.
>>

I'm unable to properly enjoy most games with significant amounts of forced melee combat, because I find it to be absolutely awful in almost every game that includes it. Fighting games excluded, ironically enough.
>>
I love my SNES mini console. So far I’ve used it to beat (for the first time): DKC, Earthbound, Star Fox, Star Fox 2, Contra 3, FF6, Chrono Trigger, Star Ocean, UN Squadron, and Super Mario Allstars.

I play all these games legit (no save states)

The main reason I play the FF games besides the cute girls is the secret bosses and that is why I preffer to play the GBA versions of the first few FF games, while I apreciate the pixel art style and fairy tale like story the fucking random battles fucking filters me every time and I need a guide for some extra dungeons.
The fucking random battle are cancer and they are why FF12 is an underpreciated master piece game play wise.

>>

NTA but /vr/ has mindbroken me at this point. I will beat a game and convince myself that I didn't actually beat it.
>I beat Super Mario World on emulator and made save states between levels? didn't beat it
>I beat it on emulator only using save states to resume play? didn't beat it
>I beat it on flashcart on an actual console? didn't beat it
>I beat it on an actual cartridge on an actual console? didn't beat it
And then I'll do something like watch somebody play SMW and think "damn, I wish I was good enough to beat this game" even though I've completed it over a dozen times.
>>
>>12748467
it's a meme
>>
>>12748479
I'm glad. It's made me unable to appreciate when I actually beat a game completely legit. I recently played through all of the Mega Man X games and I've replayed them all but X7 since, I still consider myself as not being good enough to beat any of them despite beating all of them multiple times.
>>
>>12747792
I use cheat codes, Game Genies and Game Sharks to beat video games with. Not only did I beat the game, I did it without game saves.

Instead of getting kids actual GBAs, I got them the Anbernic emulators and loaded em up with the best roms I could think of and some of my favorite childhood cartoons. I feel like it's better this way, I would have loved this shit as a kid.

If anyone:s curious, the cartoons are Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Fairly Odd Parents, Pokemon, Digimon, YuGiOh, Dragon Ball, Transformers, Samurai Jack, and Edd Ed and Eddy. I'm sure there's more, but you get the gist

>I beat Might and Magic 1 but I used a program that showed me a map of each area
>I've beaten many retro games on emulators and collection releases that included save states and I would rewind unfair insta-deaths and save state after good level runs
>I used UHS for many old school adventure games when I got stuck
>I will almost always play an updated remaster of a game over the original because they usually have quality of life updates the make the game more accessible

I beat Ninja Gaiden Black and avoided using ninpo except to cheese Alma 2 and the Vigoor Emperor. And I stocked up on healing items before the final boss. I did not beat the game.
>>
I beat the final boss in Diablo by placing healing potions all over the ground and spam attacking him since picking up the potions will automatically add them to the hot bar when I ran out. Otherwise you have to click and drag them from the inventory.
>>
>>12748685
>I beat the original Prince of Persia but I would save state after doing a perfect run of each level so I didn't waste too much time and get the bad ending
In the original (both Apple II and DOS) you can save in-game at the start of each level from level 3 and up, so that's not too different from playing it how it was made to be played. It's just levels 1-3 then, where you should have practiced until you could do a perfect run of all three of them in one go.
>>
>>12747792
When I play Mario Party with people, I make sure to use a turbo controller. Then, when playing mini-games that require button mashing (which is a lot of them), I just pretend to button mash but I hold the button down and then I win. HAHA.
>>
I've never played a survival horror game. Or any horror game.
I started gaming in the late 80s yet the only Sonic game I've played was 2 on the game gear.
I technically cheated one room in aLttP. My neighbor had a guide or maybe dial up (I didn't know what the internet was) and helped me with the invisible floor room in Ganon's Tower.
>>
>>12748772

Ah alright, so you skipped the password input then. I personally don't think that matters that much, but I play a lot of dosbox games where everything is more convenient than playing it on original hardware back in the day (removed copy protection, no slow disk loading etc.), so technically there's probably a lot of games I didn't properly beat either.
>>
>>12748626

>Buy retro system.
>Buy its corresponding ODE/Flashcart.
>Buy RGB SCART/component cables, country appropriate power supply and/or external PSU mod, get it RGB modded if need be, extra controllers.
>Download ROMs/ISOs and generally curate what I download, unless the system has a small enough library. Rename folders/ROMs so they don't have the [!] [U] details.
>Pull apart the console and properly clean it, same with controllers.
>Play it for a little bit.
>Put everything in it's own little storage container and rarely take it out again.

I never managed to reach the Best Ending legitimately in Cave Story. Having to run through Hell, defeat the Heavy Press, then still have enough health (or a Life Pot) to fight Ballos was too much of a marathon for me to consistently practice and get better at. So I made a little mod for myself where the Hell challenge is optional.
I opened a copy of the game in Booster's Lab and made it so when you first enter the Sacred Grounds, the game asks if you'll accept the challenge ahead. Choose Yes, and nothing changes: the Counter activates and you have to do the Hell marathon. Choose No, and a new save point + refill station will appear just before the final room with Ballos, but the Counter won't activate so no timed runs for you.
I felt that disabling the timer made this more like an "easy mode" than a cheat, but I still feel like I didn't beat the game. (Which is technically accurate since you have to copy the entire game to mod it, like a romhack without a patch.)

I am a retro tourist.

Used it to beat the game? Sure. That's cheating.

I hate in CRPGs when you are forced to build your character at creation instead of learn new abilities and skills as you realize their importance.

System Shock 1 is better than 2 for this very reason.
No bullshit, you're in the game and your stats/skills are whatever implants and gadgets you find laying around.
>>
>>12749961
>I hate in CRPGs when you are forced to build your character at creation instead of learn new abilities and skills as you realize their importance.
This isn't a sin. It's a fundamental design flaw of many RPGs. They're often more fun to replay than to play for the first time exactly because of that.
>>
>>12749965
Well, it has stopped me from playing BG1 or 2, or any Wizardry, or any Might and Magic...

It's too intimidating and time-consuming to risk choosing the wrong skillsets to beat the game.
>>
>>12749970
Correct. This just plain sucks.
>BG1 or 2
In actual DnD you can be sure that your DM will make adjustments so your character wouldn't be useless. You also can talk with the DM during the character creation.
This is why meme male human fighter with a sword is so popular: it's a safest bet. If devs fucked up even that, there is no hope.
Something like Diablo is far more superior in this aspect.

FF7 is alright but I care more for the atmosphere/soundtrack then the story, the materia system isn't worth investigating cause the game is too easy, I actually prefer the older FFs for tight dungeon design

I am not motivated to play retro GTA, I think saints row games already mogged them and do not care about modding scene of games

The people on here who say
>"but games don't age"
are cowards who only use that statement to deflect criticism of a game. The anons who say that shit will then say in the sane breath that you shouldn't judge a game by modern standards because they are old and do age. Be honest with yourself. If you aren't enjoying a game you aren't enjoying it and certain design decisions are either archaic or just plain bad. Saying otherwise is just you lying to yourself.

i think people are way too harsh on themselves with save states. if you already went through that portion of the game you know exactly what to do and just have to do it over and over again. you aren't robbing yourself of any experience, you are just getting back to where you were quicker which ideally would have the same result as playing it "legitimately". of course if you just rewind after every mistake then that is different but creating a save state before a boss that you have fought multiple times is understandable.

games don't age. Their quality stays the same indefinitely, not like modern games that get "patched", dlc'd and microtransacted to hell and back.

I like to 100% so I'll look up how to obtain characters etc in games like Suikoden or Shining Force II, which is fucking impossible without guides anyway so who gives a shit

I don't care about 1CCing shmups. If I beat the game, I beat the game.

I was playing Puyo Puyo CD and not having very much fun, because after the first few stages because the speed is set so high you have to plan out all your moves way in advance, and the controls are different from the sequels in a way that made me feel really clumsy and stupid, and there's almost no possibility to come back when you're losing.
I did my best anyway and made it to the final boss and the game crashed to BIOS.
I gave up and watched the ending on YouTube.

I'm sorry, Anons. I literally didn't beat the game.

Hoo boy you are in for a disappointment. Nintendo games rely solely on nostalgia. The entire point is to bring you back to when you were a 5 year old sitting on the floor playing some brightly colored mindless cartoony slop. If you didn't already experience that, you're going to think every nintendo fan is a massive manchild (which they are).

I have an arcade setup and when I play a JRPG, I do all the button inputs by slapping my penis on the playfield. I use my free hand on the joystick. I’ve been doing this as long as I can remember. >If a game seems no good today, it might have never been that good, we just put up with the shittiness back then.
No it's more that children have a much higher tolerance for bullshit than adults do. Kids have endless time and less rigid expectations, so they easily forgive clunky controls, endless grinding, or bad writing. Adults have less free time, lower tolerance for artificial padding, and notice poor design flaws right away.

You can say "well that means it was never good" but I disagree, because one it kinda leads you down the road of OLD BAD NEW GOOD, but more importantly gaming was in its infancy and we just had less of an idea of what you were or weren't "supposed to do" in game design.
>>

>>
>>12754901
You're proving my point, no kid would ever say "skill issue", no kid would have a problem with these things, because kids have shit standards and oftentimes can't tell good games from bad ones unless they're absolutely egregious in their problems like Silver Surfer and his way too big of a hurtbox for the levels. They would just mindlessly play the game and not care about its quality. Shit, I remember enjoying those Simpsons NES games as a kid and those have absolutely atrocious controls in how fucking stiff your movement is, not by design but by dev incompetence.

Oh man are you in for a treat. I can't believe never having played a Nintendo game when their catalogue is so wide, deep, and high quality. So many of their games are experiences curated by master craftsmen who know exactly what sparks joy. When I said artificial padding, I didn't necessarily mean grinding which is why I listed grinding separately. I meant shit like fetch quests or giving bosses unnecessarily large HP pools to make a fight last longer.
Not retro, but I am someone who will defend the first FF7 remake game (haven't played Rebirth yet), but that game is FILLED with artificial padding where enemies both take forever to die and you're extremely limited in the damage you can do because the game is so anti-grinding that it means every boss can have cinematic phases.

I begged for my parents to buy me Sonic Gems Collection just for Sonic CD as it was the easiest way to play it if you didn't own a Sega CD, especially if you are an europoor like me.
I booted it up exactly once, played up to Tidal Tempest and called it a day. Never touched it ever again after that.

I used to be extremely picky in the games I wanted to continue playing, so 90% of the time I quit after the first hour so I could get the dopamine hit of starting the damn game. No shit I am an autist.
Eventually I picked up the 2013 remake and it actually lived up to my expectations. Got all achievements and enjoyed my time with it.

Before Sonic CD I played the other Sonic games on Sonic Mega Collection over on the PC at my grandma's house. Then I lost the disc, found it again a decade ago and couldn't run it on a laptop and its been lost since.
3D Sonic is kusoge. I have standards.

I own a copy of Ocarina of Time. I played it a bit, the "kid" stuff in the beginning. I started to get autistically OCD obsessed with collecting every last thing, doing every last challenge etc, and then... I just put it down. I never beat it. I think I got stuck on the idea that you have to collect every last thing as kid Link before growing up, otherwise the kid stuff is missable(?)

I actually became bored with the game in a way, although I suspect that this boredom is more a product of my own deranged completionist mind than a comment on the game's quality. I never really tested whether you can go back-and-forth from kid Link to adult Link.

The way I think about goes something like this:

Is that a mobile game timer?

Everyone knows this mechanic, right? You play for some time, then the game puts a chastity belt on you for a few hours and extorts money to take it off.

We have a lot of stuff in gaming that is basically this, but without the ability to pay to skip. I blame arcades.

Some of those are unavoidable due to the technical limitations, like loading screens. You sit on your hands and do nothing. These are a necessary evil that can be eliminated by the save states.

Some of the gameplay situations are barely disguised versions of that, like a boss walk. You're technically doing something, but it might as well be a loading screen if you know the road well.
Grind could be a version of that, but it's a bit trickier: a long grind can serve a narrative purpose to convey the feeling that your hero went through many trials and tribulations and he is now a veteran. But it's, more often than not, also a loading screen in a trench coat.
Same goes for extra spongy enemies. Continuos repetition could be a test of skill that checks your performance consistency, but it's almost always also a loading screen in a trench coat.

Most of the things here you're describing here are things that, in a well designed game, are there as punishments for stupid and unskilled people to encourage them to put actual effort and thought into beating the game without actually preventing them from doing so.

>punishments for stupid and unskilled people
Punishing stupid and unskilled players by making learning harder is a questionable design decision.
>>
>>12759651
>Punishing stupid and unskilled players by making learning harder is a questionable design decision
The issue is that if there's no punishment for playing brainlessly and effortlessly, you end up in the Pokemon/Kirby situation where a game can have numerous intricate, fun, well-designed mechanics, but because it's so easy that you beat it in your sleep, many people end up thinking that it's boring and bad because they were never forced to use those systems.
But on the other hand, if you make the game really really hard, then some lower skilled players won't be able to beat it at all, even if they try their absolute best.

The compromise is a having both a fast, challenging solution and a slow, easy solution to challenges. Skilled players will take the former. Unskilled players are given the option of improving so that they can take the former too, or taking the latter.
In RPGs, the slow, easy solution is grinding, and in action games, it's brute forcing something with quantity of attempts.
These solutions are pretty much always going to be much less fun, but the fact that the game as an optional, less fun way of playing them that's accessible to unskilled player doesn't make them bad games, any more than a match-3 puzzle game having a colorblind mode for accessibility that's less fun for colorblind players.

Now, in some poorly designed games, there is no fast, challenging solution. Grinding is mandatory, or beating a boss is all luck and you just have to keep trying until you win.
These are bad games and you should not play them. But that doesn't mean that EVERY game with grinding or boss walks is bad.
A boss walk in a good game will teach you how to beat the boss, and you only need to get softlocked once in an RPG where grinding is verboten to appreciate how nice it is to have as an option for the rest of your life.
