What is the most unnecessary censorship you've seen in a game?
Japanese porn games have some ridiculous censorship since they can't show genitals but can show just about anything elseThis leads to absolutely absurd visuals like a dude skullfucking a woman to death through her eye socket but thankfully his dick is pixelated so it's all good and wholesome
>>12747883>thankfully his dick is pixelated so it's all good and wholesomei agree. im not gay for necrophiles. they should uncensor pussies though.
>>12747883>whataboutism
Removed guns in Sunset Riders EU cover art. Even at the age of 4 I thought something looked odd. Like they were riding into a fistfight.
>>12748268the enemies look like they're targeting something behind the riders, like the riders just trampled something and the mob's coming in to finish them off.
>>12747864Is it cheating to include modern releases?
>>12748557It's because American gameboys couldn't animate the wink
>>12747864Yoshi can't eat dolphins in the American version of Super Mario World.
>>12747864Aria of Sorrow also has a similar statue in the garden area being covered up like this.
>>12748595lies
>>12747864This shit right here. But a dying, bleeding out Baram openly asking Clyde/Shadow to mercykill him was A-OK, apparently.
I somewhat remember one hentai game review on Something Awful where the graphics were uncensored but the dialog was so you get "I could see hee p***y" while having a full frontal shot of one.
>>12748886Adrenaline junkies
The most unnecessary? All of it.
>>12747864
>>12748920they should make him black next time
>>12748920>also got censored in NES Bionic Commando and SNES Wolfenstein 3DWhen has he NOT been censored?
>>12748920I'm convinced this was someone shitposting and not a serious attempt at censorship. He still has the stache for fucks sake.
>>12748920>Hitler>The cooler Hitler
The 2nd wave of censorship in the NES port of Maniac Mansion. The devs already censored out all the most offensive stuff that would trigger the Nintendo censors, but it wasn't enough for them. So they ended up having to remove some very tame shit without having time to replace them with anything. I can roughly understand the reclining nude statue, even though you can't see anything, but the forced removal of the Mummy pin-up calendars is just weird.Even funnier when you realize the majority of people who were interested in playing a graphical adventure on their NES were over 18, and Nintendo Power already showed the entire uncensored map of the mansion in their magazine, so the kids who never even played the game saw exactly what Nintendo didn't want them to see, and the adults who actually played the game didn't.
the ttyd remaster was pretty bad, you can't have bad guys call a woman an airhead apparently
>>12748926Bionic Commando ReArmed tries to censor Hitler by putting a oxygen mask on his face, but you can still just barely see his mustache underneath it.
>>12749448It's not a complete rewrite, but there have been tons of tweaks, far too many to list out. They mostly fall in two flavors: correction of mistranslations and political correctness edits.Notorious mistranslations like the Lakitu's throwing "pipes" have been corrected. The Crystal Palace reference that was missed has been rectified. Certain things have been re-localized to either match the Japanese (Shadow Sirens changed to Three Shadows) or match established Mario Canon (Squeeks changed to Little Mousers). Interestingly, Luigi still fights the Chestnut King so either that wasn't a missed reference or Treehouse missed it a second time. The far bigger list of changes is the ones done for political correctness as part of Nintendo of America's DEI initiatives. Tons of lines that could even slightly be construed as being sexist, homophobic, or shaming of fat or mentally ill people have been sanitized. Some examples off the top of my head:- Goombas in underground no longer catcall Goombella- All references to characters being "crazy", "lunatics", "nuts", etc. are rewritten- Jerry the Bob-omb from Luigi's story is no longer disgusted by Luigi's crossdressing- Peach no longer says she should "act more like a princess"It's kind of inconsistent what things are changed. Like they'll change completely minor things like Eddie the Mask being called a "health nut", but stuff like Don Pianta and Dupree being sexist are completely unchanged
>>12748595You can do so in the GBA port
>>12749485Right is better. Left looks like she is sporting a huge set of balls.
>>12749645Gay.Any hetero guy can see the phat pussy
La Pucelle, a game where you are a nun, had all crosses removed (though they missed some), despite the entire game being about playing as a nun exorcising evil spirits. IIRC it was even removed during a crucifixion scene.More understandable but still stupid, they also edited out a cigarette from a character's sprite set, which made his victory animation where he switches to a new one nonsensical as he just switches out... nothing.
>>12747931how is that whataboutism?
>>12749448Similarly, stood out in a bad way when CTR remake changes Oxide threat so he says he'll make everyone on the planet into his minions instead of his slaves.
>>12749485Are those stockings on the left? So they went from pantyshot and stockings to pantyhose/leggings?
>>12749683Yeah, on the right. Left has a transvestite sack.
Chrono Cross "remaster" is now safe for everyone
>>12750240You shouldn't be allowed to do shit like this. Unlike Final Slop 7, the English translation for CC was actually really good. The fuck are these niggas changing shit for?
>>12750240Why make the art worse?
>>12749485Right looks definitely better.Looks actually like a flying kick.Left looks retardedly stupid and clearly just in that weird pose so you can see the pantyshot. Oh course you could still say she's deliberately taking that weird pose to present.
>>12749645>>12750234>>12750284>Being a censorship apologizerAlso no, right does not look better and the pose is less natural for a flying kick. Also it's censored.>But it looks like a tranny!Awful gaslight.
>>12750319If you cant see one looks better than the other, i dont know what to tell you
>>12750990>Eet lewks bedduhrrrrrrr
>>12750240>they turned her whiteIsn't this more offensive?
>>12748676Honestly, the censorship here just made the scene hit harder, because it was still BLATANTLY obvious what was happening. It made it feel like Cid was basically trying to sugarcoat it to protect his adopted daughter, but failed because he had no idea just how hard she'd give up in the wake of his death. Also, it fit Cid's character more. The whole game, he was gleefully wallowing in man-made horrors at the expense of a subjugated race because he appreciated the grandiosity of it all. Seems fitting he might glaze over the grim reality of suicide because "WEEEEEEE!!! *SPLASH*!!!"
>>12748920This was entirely necessary because it was objectively cooler when "censored".
>>12749736>had all crosses removed (though they missed some), despite the entire game being about playing as a nun exorcising evil spiritsIt makes sense when you know how censors worked. If you put a cross in a game, some middle-aged christcuck soccer mom might see it and cop a fit that her religion was being slandered/mocked/misrepresented. The actual context of the cross was irrelevant. They were just removing red flags that would result in angry calls to their consumer hotline.Honestly 90% of censorship in the west was just trying to appease uppity women with too much free time. Part of the reason it fell off was because "stay at home moms" fell off when it got too expensive to raise a kid on a single income. A mom with a job doesn't have time to give a fuck that there's a cross or a booby in their kids' video game. They're just happy it keeps them quiet.
>>12751920>some middle-aged christcuck soccer mom might see it and cop a fit that her religion was being slandered/mocked/misrepresented.Okay, fine. Let her. That's her right. No one needs to listen to her. Giving these people a voice on the internet was humanity's greatest mistake. Before that they'd bitch to their local friends and get over it.
>>12747931Nta but Japan actually does censor quite a bit with western imports, it's just censored for violence instead
>>12751886>The whole game, he was gleefully wallowing in man-made horrors at the expense of a subjugated race because he appreciated the grandiosity of it allNot really. We're never really told what his motivations were or how he felt about what he was doing for the Empire, and almost immediately after you first meet him, he's already expressing regret and acting like a good guy who wants to stop the war. Frankly, he's not very well-written.
>>12755173>it's just censored for violence insteadWhich is crazy considering how violent a lot of animes are.
>>12751886>Honestly, the censorship here just made the scene hit harder, because it was still BLATANTLY obvious what was happening. It made it feel like Cid was basically trying to sugarcoat it to protect his adopted daughter, but failed because he had no idea just how hard she'd give up in the wake of his death.felt similar to this when originally played. Like, her posture, the music, it was clear what was happening. A big 'show, dont tell' moment was kind of born out of this censorship. I wont defend it, but i do think it wouldn'tve hit as hard if the straight translation was used.
>>12749485The one on the left looks terrible. I can see what they were trying to do there, but it's poorly done.
>>12749485>>12755304why not both?
>>12755304>>12755327Possible to have a romhack that cycles through both?
>>12755208It's this weird thing about foreign products are on a different rating standard. Like how western games have to cover up bones in China, but Chinese games can show them.
>>12747864AWOOOOOGA*eyes burst out of skull*OWW OWWW OWW OWW OWWWW*tongue rolls out of mouth*HUMMANA HUMMANA HUMMANA*Jizzes pants*
>>12755291>>12751886If you knew japanese you'd know the original scene hits hard and the translation is ridiculous, no ifs ands or buts, it seriously impresses me how far you can go to rationalize the version you played as kids
>>12747931learn a new word today lil guy? Didnt learn the meaning apparently.
>>12756051well, played the GBA ver years later that had a much less... localized and more faithful translation in many places compared to the SNES, and that scene was one where it was much closer to the Japanese. It didn't hit the same. So, yeah, you can't define the experience for me objectively. But go on and be impressed about how you claim you can objectively assess other's experience perfectly.
>>12751920Eh, let them whine. This was a niche game, no news station was going to even know it exists, much less make a story about it. No Little Timmy would be buying such a niche game, back then blatantly anime games like this were mostly played by people who were at least in their teens, especially since this is a turn-based strategy game, Little Timmy wants to shoot things and jump on platforms, not do math every turn. It was too obscure for anyone who would care to ever know it exists.I am Christian yet I fucking HATED how whiny soccer moms would bitch about trying to get things censored because it was offensive, let them be offended. The game is about a freaking demon-exorcising nun, kinda hard to ignore that obviously it would have religious themes.I hated censorship then, and I hate it now. Almost as insulting as when wine is changed to "milk" or "fruit juice" or "potion" or whatever. Especially when your character is a minor and is not allowed to drink it in the game anyway.
>>12755173>>12755208Japan's ratings are insanely strict against gore in games, specifically decapitations, cutting off limbs, and visible guts. They are far far more restrictive against it than anything sexual, you can have a game with flat out rape in it but can't show a head being cut off, it's not that it would get a high age rating, it's flat out not allowed under any age rating. It's only games that get this treatment too, movies and tv shows are fine with showing it.From what I read it's due to their ratings board being established as a response to a series of child murders in 1997 where a 14 year old serial killer mutilated children. Many were blaming video games for it and the ratings board is full of old farts that likely never touched a videogame in their life and are highly conservative. Most other countries have since moved on (Look at the insane censorship that used to happen in the EU in the 80s and 90s, you literally could not use the word "Ninja", it was considered too violent) but the CERO board in Japan refuses to change and the fossils in charge of it prefer it that way. Games like No More Heroes or modern Resident Evils even to this day are heavily censored of any gore there, despite being made there, when the US and most international versions are not. IIRC many of the devs of these games have spoken out about how backwards this is and consider the US versions the true original versions, but like I said, the people in charge of this refuse to even consider changing their 90s era censorship policies.
>>12749485>>12755304Honestly, I like the USA version here more because it looks like she's actually attacking with both her legs pointing forward and the way her arms are angled. The Japanese version looks more like she's never attempted a jump-kick in her life and is reconsidering it mid-jump.
>>12755208What >>12756430 said, games and only games are held to a specific standard that does not exist in other mediums in Japan.
>>12756430Reminds me of how in Xenosaga ep 1, Albedo cuts off his head but you don't really see it in Japanese. In English, he rips off his own head with his bare hands just to show off that he's not only immortal, but completely insane.
>>12756430>They are far far more restrictive against it than anything sexual, you can have a game with flat out rape in it but can't show a head being cut off, it's not that it would get a high age rating, it's flat out not allowed under any age rating.Afaik computer games are basically exempt from this on some level because computers aren't seen for children in the way consoles are, so a computer game can do whatever the fuck it wants as long as it accepts a rating.
>>12756430>Look at the insane censorship that used to happen in the EU in the 80s and 90s, you literally could not use the word "Ninja", it was considered too violentAnother "one country represents an entire continent" post. It's amazing how Americans can't understand a simple concept like multiple countries.
>>12748921They tried that the first game.
>>12756943Bruh, due to the anti-ninja thing, ALL of 80s cartoon TMNT was censored regardless of region, to a point where it was like Michaelangelo retired his nunchucks without saying it.
>>12748920He has sunglasses in Japan too and is just called Fuhrer. The reason because in the time between the ps1 and PSP versions of Innocent Sin a new law was passed regarding the portrayals of historical figures in Japan so by law, Atlus had to do it.Thry simply did it in the most unintentionally hilarious way possible and said law means if P2 gets a full remake, we WILL get The Cooler Hitler in the game.
>>12757017What's funnier is that according to Igor, actual Hitler canonically was a persona user in the persona universe (and Carl Jung was the first persona user ever)
>>12748514Holy shit they massacred it.
>>12757017So you're saying is it's the actual definition of censorship happening there.
>>12756951I like how his fupa changed locations.
>>12750259I don't think it's worse... it's just repulsive in a different way from how it was repulsive before. She looks more like an ugly human and less like an uncanny bugdollhuman.
>>12747931>whataboutismhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Precedent
>>12756051>it seriously impresses me how far you can go to rationalize the version you played as kidsYou are terribly stupid. Most people who'd talk about this at all wouldn't EVER have experienced the pure Japanese version. And there is nothing impressive about them preferring one iffy translation over another. God why can't this board have a single conversation about this topic that isn't full of this kind of grandiose, scornful judgment that's given with zero evidence and only poor reasoning to support it?Anyway I've read plenty of translated Japanese stories that hit hard, in manga form. I've hardly ever encountered one in a video game, because game developers are mostly retards who can't write for crap, regardless of what country or culture they're from. There is zero chance that the Japanese version of this scene is greatly superior to any halfway decent English version. It might be slightly superior, but not greatly. There just isn't room for that much difference, with such simple characters as these.
>>12756943You realize that thanks to Europe's stupid-ass "no gambling" law that even applies to fake casinos in single player offline games with zero microtransactions or real money involved whatsoever developers have just simply been not implementing casinos or casino-like games such as slot machines in games at all worldwide instead of bother making a unique version just for them? Also >>12757009they started to heavily tone down their weapon usage, especially Leonardo's katanas and Raphael's sais, in later seasons because of this.
>>12757437This is disingenuous as shit. It's a fucking suicide scene that was censored. It's one of the most impressive moments on the console, period, that was replaced with a joke.Besides it's 2026 and it's time to accept that the translations we had as kids as our only alternative were shitty and that we now have the choice to leave them behind.
>>12748514Damn, thanks for this, never knew Pikmin suffered for that. So stupid.
In America, they made one of the criminals white lol
The Genesis version of Street Fighter 2 turned this black guy getting punched into a blonde white guy and every other version kept it as is.
>Steven Hendricks's original art for the cover of Haunted House. The image was rejected by a member of Atari's marketing department due to the location of the glaring eyes.Technically not censorship I guess, but still pretty funny.
>>12759370That pic is pretty perfect. Everything is just in the middle. Tits, glaring eyes and a spider. It also looks pretty classy.
>>12757598There's nothing impressive about it, and you're not Japanese (I am though).
>>12759445I'm your mom, go to sleep.

>>12748595Does this count as censorship tho? More like a gameplay difference

>>12761746It's related to the whole push for "dolphin-safe tuna" that was all the rage in the 90s. They probably didn't want to get involved with that scandal.
