Oh yes, precisely. There’s a whole generation that grew up with the internet as a handful of effectively permanent, always-on platforms, so the concept of a website simply being unavailable for a while feels almost alien to them. To anyone who remembers the old web, a maintenance page wasn’t a catastrophe—it was just Tuesday. I weep for the new generation.

I needed Vimm's yesterday because I was moving my Dreamcast games from one ODE to another and the new one doesn't like the format some of the old one's games were in. So I had to redownload those games in a working format for the new ODE.

Shit, 4chan itself went down a lot early on, hence all the "moot ran off with the donation bux to Mexico" jokes.
>>
>>12753732
I arrived here in 2006 and I don't remember it going down for those reasons. I remember dumb shit like /b/ going to war with itself over boxxy and ddossing the site into oblivion. Things were real fuckin stupid here. But that's what made it feel fun and unpredictable. Now nothing feels new about anything ever. It's like I've been watching reruns of a show for 20 years, they rarely show my favorite episodes, and I'm too damn lazy to get up and change the channel.
>>
>>12753738
Yeah, it had mostly stabilized by then, but things were quite precarious in the first year or so as the site was pretty much entirely donation-driven (something that would later be referenced by word-filtering TEH REI into DONATE TO 4CHAN). As for predictability, well, it helped that moot and the other mods, fags though they were, actively participated and contributed to the chaos themselves. Today's administration, such as it is, is not interested in such in the slightest.
>>
>>12753745
Yeah I'm not going to say what I feel because I don't want to catch a 3 day but being banned by Snacks just for being annoying is not part of the modern 4chan experience.
>>

>>12753738
>I arrived here in 2006
There's your problem. It was more stable by then. 2004~05 was the chaos and instability of the site
>>
>>12754509
We still had chaos and instability but it was on account of the users not the administration. The sort of situation where you wake up, think "I wonder what's happening on /b/ today" then open it to find the whole board flooded and everybody fighting about something you can barely parse while it keeps logging out. Explosive user growth, no captchas, and a growing reputation for being the scary hacker website. I guess the level of stability it did have under all that pressure is quite impressive.

>>
>>12756982
Well truth be told it's not as if these limits and the shitty buggy scripts enforcing them don't encourage users to build such tools in the first place. I was using the site normally trying to build no-intro sets for the Gameboy and Gameboy Color. I encountered a few roms where whatever shitty scripts he has to switch between versions of a rom prevented a few from being downloaded and the obvious logic, simply constructing the URL using the ID number manually hit the anti-hotlinking script. In the moment the solution was to copy the curl command for a different download out of network tools in the browser, change up the ID, and use that to download the roms I needed.

But I'm sure you can infer from all that shit that right then and there I thought "you know what, if I just feed all of this into a LLM I will get a nice script where I can give it the URL to a rom's page, it can parse the json and list them by ID, then I select the one I need and it downloads. Free Deepseek could one shot this."

Creating a situation where a single site is a bottleneck for the distribution of roms is really dumb too but what is anyone trying to do to solve that? Except for people like me compiling sets and sharing them.

when it comes to piracy it's literally a requirement, retard. the popular sites get taken down or run into DMCA issues, so if a good site exists and you want to keep it that way then gatekeeping is how.
>>
>>12749081
when all the websites get taken down and shit gets worse, the people with the files you want won't let you have copies because they'll have your degenerate mindset.
>>
I also want to say if you can't find some commercially released game that came out during the life of a console you are probably retarded. They are mirrored in many different places on the internet many times over. You don't need updated sets to find them. You can probably find a file that has been kicking around the internet for 20 years and it will still verify against the latest dat. I can get scene isos and they verify against redump. Some site going down does not matter for most people's needs.

The problem has always been at the cutting edge of it, trying to get the latest dumps of protos and homebrews to complete your set.
>>
>>12753751
Not even that is really a reason, none of the ISPs give a shit about what you do if you don't get complaints, and literally no company is issuing ISP complaints over retro games. Not even Disney sinks that low, they'll complain about a new Kingdom Hearts game but don't give a shit about the PS2 or handheld titles.

I hate to be the messenger that gets shot. I hate to piss on your parade. But it isn't 2004. Just checking a user's referer header is not protection, it's cope. If you want to stop scrapers you need to implement heavy javascript checks, tokenize and IP lock your generated download URLs in addition to rate limiting users, and do other things that make the user experience worse yet make the bot situation untenable. As it stands the site has little protection against the kind of retarded Redditor who would do something like vibe code a python script to download an entire redump set from there then check it against a dat. You can spit on me, screech at me, and call me slurs because I downloaded 100 Gameboy roms using crude curl commands and relied on other sources where I could download thousands of roms in single archives like any sane person for the rest. You know, the considerate behavior that doesn't harm everyone else. But regardless of what I do the site as it stands is very scrapeable. I wasn't even gonna go way into detail about it but I might as well. Cope.

>>
>>12757207
I'm not really interested in continuing a slapfight with you. If you want to talk about the actual subject of this thread let's do it. Otherwise this is a pissing contest. I get in those all the time but one hour is enough man. Let's talk about something of substance.

The world does not work like you want it to. Vimm's Lair is a website on the internet. Let's think of the internet like a filthy neighborhood infested with drugs and crime. Vimm's Lair is like a house with the key to it's back door hidden under the welcome mat at the front door. There's no button we can press that makes all the Redditors in this world simply disappear. If the tards on r/datahoarder can scrape your site at will then they're gonna do it. You can say in a way that I'm "victim blaming" Vimm's but as someone who works in this industry in a professional capacity I took one look at that and said "what the fuck" before this situation happened. I got what I needed without abusing the fuck out of the website and it's resources. I moved on. A userscript to correct what's broken about the js used to display different versions of a game probably could have fixed it too then I could have completed the requests in the way that was intended. But it would have the same effect so why bother?

Your position is "I don't like this" and if you actually pay attention to what I am saying beneath the criticism of Vimm's you can see that I am saying that I don't like this or think it's right either. But if simply asking people not to do a bad thing stopped them all of this planet's societies could be utopias.
>>

>I'm not really interested in continuing a slapfight with you

Scraping rom sites? Old. Boring. Right now I'm scraping one of those sites that loads roms with an emulator in the browser.
>>
>>12757007
>no-intro sets
Why are you using a site where you download roms individually for full sets? This isn't the 90s, your only source of ROMs isn't some random Geocities page you Yahooed anymore. Just get a fullset from archive or something if you are going after full sets and not individual games, or use a torrent.
>>
>>12757461
Okay so if you understand how no-intro works, they give you a dat with all the hashes right? People don't think of it in these terms they just think "download a full set" but how did those full sets come to exist if no-intro only gives hashes? When they update the dat files with the latest roms where do you go to get them? The answer right now is Vimm's. When a new dat is released an automated message gets placed on the site asking for people to upload these roms. I have looked at sets from before Myrient shut down and they were getting the newest roms from Vimm's, probably scraping it too lmao.

Before things like this there were some oddball forums where the collectors would hang out and post those updates. I got a lot of cool stuff from them like different scene BBS sets. But that's dead and everything is kinda centered around Vimm's now. So for such sets to exist in an updated forum some autist like me has to go to Vimm's and download the missing roms one by one to complete the set then share it.
>>
>>12757478
>but how did those full sets come to exist if no-intro only gives hashes?
The same fucking way redump sets exist when redump is only hashes, people took the time to make already put together sets with said hashes. Again, this isn't the 90s where you compared your goodset dat files against the random ROMs you scraped off here and there, people already did this work for you. You are trying to reinvent the wheel because you don't trust that wheels are supposed to be round.

Also, that would only apply to new dumps, which basically means either homebrew or some long long proto that was recently found, 99% of the library will have been dumped decades ago and isn't changing, there is no reason to download the retail games that were released 30-40 years ago one-by-one, those have already been dumped and verified an eternity ago. You aren't going to suddenly find Super Mario Bros 4 on the NES or Sonic 4 on the Genesis. If you want to just get homebrew and protos being uploaded to Vimm's then whatever, but there is zero reason to scrape entire sets when 99% of it are the same hash-checked roms dumped decades ago that everyone else has.

Lol dude the internet and 4chan is unrecognisable now

2007-2011 it was still more or less a wild west and you could stumble upon anything even on sfw boards.. now the internet and 4chan in general is completely controlled by governments and big corps. A.i is the final nail in the coffin for freedom of imagination and expression. But you hit the nail on the head, I feel like I'm watching re-runs of the bad episodes and too lazy to change the channel

If you read my posts you would understand that yes, I am trying to complete a set. I started off doing it as a proof of concept. I wanted to see how close to complete I could come using the worst available romsets that I had access to. I started with scene roms, the nintendo gigaleak lot check roms, and the last goodset available. That was entertaining. Then I bumped it up using the latest no-intro set from private trackers which hadn't been updated since myrient went down. Nobody is carrying that torch. So why not me I'm dicking around dating roms anyway? What started off as fun became something to fill a need. If nobody else is doing it I might as well. Now that I have given all the info about how the sausage is made anybody else who wants to do it can too. The sane way is to grab the latest no-intro set you can find and work your way up from there. I'm using https://igir.io/ to do it.
>>
>>12757507
If you count homebrew then the set for any major system will never be "complete" because homebrew is still being made for it.

Have you ever had sex?

I know and I'm not sure I want to be updating sets all the time. It will be cool if other people will do it too so I don't need to be the only one downloading 30 variants of Yu-Gi-Oh games from Vimm's that I don't even want to play. But that's what game preservation looks like in 2026. It's tedious. It's boring. It had me considering tracking down the PC game and trying to extract the roms out of it myself instead. Once it's done it's done and nobody else ever has to do it again though.

Many times! I'm married.
>>
>>12757025
If you have 245MB to spare, you can store the entire No Intro Game Boy set zipped.
Anyway, check out the GB versions of Bionic Commando and Battle Arena Toshinden if you haven't.

People are mass scraping the site with AI models because vimm doesn't require a captcha, verification, download limits, logins, etc. It's like how RHDN's moderators sabotaged their own site by running a bot that's constantly downloading every hack at once, believing this will somehow give them ownership of a fucking web domain.
>>
>>12757642
>RHDN's moderators sabotaged their own site by running a bot that's constantly downloading every hack at once,
I'm sorry, what?
Are you telling me they're stealing hacks from other sites?
Explain.
>>
>>12757461
If vimm's lair doesn't want people downloading entire romsets from his website then maybe he shouldn't give people the ability to do so. It's his own fault really. I hope someone uses AI to clone his entire website and profit off of his services without vimm seeing a single rupee.
>>
>>12757650
not him, but people were trying to do a hostile take over of rhdn. the owner announced the closure of the site shortly after but decided to keep it open. the evil party moved over to a new site, romhacking.
>>
>>12757693
>the evil party moved over to a new site, romhacking.
kek I saw like 3 different variations where the ebul site was some rival (hi nightcrawler) Anon's not talking about that Discord dramabait that went nowhere.
>>
You will own nothing and be miserable.
>>
>>12757718
Doesn't apply to me. I got what I wanted before it disappeared.
>>
>rom sites going down left and right, people mass scraping everything from the remaining ones
>meanwhile i like downloading one at a time, beating it first before moving onto the next one (same thing when torrenting bigger games) >having gigs upon gigs worth of games i haven't played gives me anxiety
i'm fucked aren't i
>>
>>12757784
Not really. All the retards gather around one site. Then when it goes down they claim it's a calamity and game preservation is dead. But if you look at https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/ROM_%26_ISO_sites you can see there are more than enough sites out there. If you get really desperate you can even find roms on soulseek.
>>
>>12755020
god, yes, please. would solve so many problems
>>
>>12757664
They still not going to use your romsets retarded faggot lol
>>
>>12757016
You'd be surprised, I'm assuming theres is some kind of automated system for it. But in general you rarely will see that shit. Only one ISP in my life was really gay about it but they did every shitty thing an ISP could do, constant dropping connection, data caps, forcing their own modem and so on.
>>
>>12757016
>>12757982
you're even less likely to get ISP notices now because there was some court case in the past year or so that basically said they no longer are legally bound to notify copyright infringers.
>>
>>12748169
Millennials were the ones fighting to keep Vimm's Lair alive, it's that emulation has became so mainstream that companies started to hunt down these sites on their own merits and kill them off one by one.

Also the site is back up.
>>
Genuinely don’t mind if every rom site and emulator got hunted down. Wouldn’t mind if every video game youtuber got hunted down too. It’d make me laugh so much. I only play retro games but I just want things to get worse so bad. I don’t know why.
>>
>>12758018
>I don’t know why.
well that's easy: because you've been a pathetic friendless loser that's done nothing with their life and you want everyone to suffer like you do. normal well-adjusted people don't think like you do
>>
>>12758012
Lol the only people who actually care are Stop preserving Mario and Pokemon and your site would still be up.

UM YEAH WE'RE NAMCO PLEASE REMOVE ACE COMBATTU 3

>>meanwhile i like downloading one at a time, beating it first before moving onto the next one (same thing when torrenting bigger games) >having gigs upon gigs worth of games i haven't played gives me anxiety
>i'm fucked aren't i
The anxiety thing is just silly, you can always just download the fullset to have it yourself and put it on some external backup drive or something, only using it when you want to move onto a new game. A lot easier than hunting down the individual game you want to play every time.
>>
>>12758010
Link? I don't recall seeing anything about this.
>>
>>12758247
No, it's "Continue preserving Mario and Pokémon and your site would still be up."
>>
Website is perfectly fine and the retarded jeet is bitching about nothing.

>He just couldn't accept a simple login wall that they do to fucking protect shit like this
Then why didn't they just say that? Why did the random IA mod feel the need to be vague and ignore his messages for almost a month before just banning him when asked why the post was still locked? Or how there's a shit ton of other posters on the site who have the exact same situation happen to them? It's probably more likely that a mod got a little upset and decided to power trip.
>>
>>12759265
Well anon this is my opinion. It may not be a popular one but whatever. If you are relying on some service to host your pirated material you are forever at the mercy of them. You may not like what they choose to do. But they bought the drives and the bandwidth. In this case you're lucky enough that they took on the legal exposure too as opposed to just purging your fucking shit like most platforms usually do. As if IA doesn't have enough legal exposure/problems already. Everyone wants to complain. Nobody wants to solve the problem. So we're stuck with IA and Vimm's.
>>
>>12757023
so you have the competancy to know this is possible and make tools to do it but you are somehow unable to find ANY other places to download in bulk?
>>
>>12748159
>get smg from v
>add it to wii through backup manager
>play
>crash on opening ufo cutscene
wow great site you got here, really preserving things
>>
>>12760907
Sounds like a (You) problem
>>
>>12748159
it's back up

>>12757025
>"I can see color"
I can't :(
>>
>>12761148
KEK! Fucking loser lmaaaaoooo
>>
>>12760894
That's not the problem. I am not downloading from Vimm's in bulk. I could probably come up with 100 different places to download roms from that I could even automate if you gave me enough time and reasons to try. I am mostly assembling my sets from files I have had on drives for years.

The real problem is the long tail. All the new roms that are added to no-intro dats and need to be found to complete the set. Vimm's has proven to be the best and only place to get them so it's the bottleneck of the operation. Whatever is wrong with it has to be dealt with to get what's missing.
>>
>>12757025
>are there even really even that many Gameboy games worth playing?
Mario Land 2
Wario Land
Wario Land 2

But yeah, I also think the GBC has more good games and if you compare games in the same genres, they're often better on Color
For example GB's Golf is just completely inferior to GBC's Mario Golf which is a fucking masterpiece
>>
>>12757025
Kirby's Block Ball and both Kirby's Dream Lands
>>
>>12757784
One site goes down another one pops up. That's just the nature of online piracy in general. It's cutting the head off of a hydra.
>>
>>12757784
Download the set for everything small enough, extract one at a time, get a similar experience. If you're completely autistic though setup a homeserver to host a website only you can access, host the games there, download your games over the internet from a computer in another room.
>>
>>12748364
This but unironically. The TotK incident and the iPhone emulation surge proved normoids are not to be trusted on the seven seas.
