>Try to keep things /vr/ related: Focus should be on 6th Gen Consoles and older. Slight off topic is fine so long as it's related to CRTs, such as later 16:9 models, HD models, etc. Systems with backwards compatibility are also safe territory, as are re-releases on newer hardware. PC CRTs are also welcome and appreciated.
>Produce OC! Bust out your camera and take photos of your CRTs displaying all sorts of games, featuring all sorts of tubes, using all sorts of signals. Getting good shots can be hard. Match your camera's frame rate (50 or 60fps) in your camera apps' settings and use a low ISO for best results.
>Try and give as much information as possible when asking for info on a specific set, or troubleshooting an issue to expedite and help you may receive. As always, Google is your friend and we are your friends with benefits. Do people read this? Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either; Seriously, there's literally 6 years of backlog at this point.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. Always remember to show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Limited discussion of video processing and scaling devices is alright, but remember to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories.

Is there really enough demand to stay in business as a CRT repairman in the current year? Sounds like it could be lucrative for a little while, but money would dry up rather quickly

Best? No way. The bigger FS series WEGAs usually have wonky geometry. It can be fixed with some effort. 24" and under are usually decent.
Sony cheapest out on the components inside starting in the early 2000s. The PCB is very flimsy and ICs tend to go bad. When I open up my KV-27V42 I'm amazed at how much better the build quality is compared to WEGAs.
Anyways here's a pic of my kv-20fs120 with near perfect geometry for a flat tube

here's the Sharp I picked up at recycling. 27FS560 built in March 2007, well into the plasma/lcd era. As good as a WEGA Trinitron but cheaper if you can find one for sale.
Works but needs new capacitors in the power supply section. Theres some AC voltage leaking into the picture causing ripples.

Is image persistance/"phosphor persistance" normal on a CRT? For example, I'm in a black room in Silent Hill 2, I examine a object and get some white text on the black background.

When I close the text, I can see a faint "ghost" of the image for 1-2 seconds on the screen. Is my TV dying? Am I fucked?

>>12750412
noo dont say that, I dont want my TV to die :(
>>
>>12748395
Guys, CRTs are kind of overrated for Gen 6. If you're playing something from Gen 5 or earlier, it's okay. But for Gen 6 and up, no one scales pixel art for CRT, except maybe for non-retro games where they went with pixel art. But even so, that doesn’t make 3D games look any better. A lot of Gen 6 was designed for upscaling, even in 2D games, but as I said, most of them didn’t scale well. If you bought one because it’s cheap, that’s fine; if you bought it as your daily driver, that’s a rookie mistake.
>>
>>12750561
i play PS2 and gamecube games on my CRT because when those consoles and games released, they were designed for consumer grade TV's of the early 2000's. You cant tell me that Silent Hill 2 was designed for HD or a LCD flat screen 16:9 tv
>>
>>12750578
I mean, they don't look any better on a CRT. Only if you zoom in on the textures, but consoles have so much post-processing on top of the CRT to mask the low-quality textures. The PS2's video output was garbage, and the Xbox didn't lose anything with the upscaling from the 360 emulator.
>>
>>12750581
I've never played an xbox before, but I know a CRT helps mask the PS2's video output while also having better response times than my HD TV, and I'm not buying/using a expensive video converter to hook it up to a modern TV.
How would you suggest someone were to play PS2 games? On a HDMI converter? gross!
>>
>>12750165
no. say it isnt so. no.
>>
>>12750587
did they completely do away with component on modern tvs? I got my ps2 hooked up to my 42" panny plasma via hd retrovision component cables
>>
>>12750647
for the most part, most tvs now only come with hdmis
>>
I found a Philips CineOS at like 100 dollars.
Should I? HD CRTs are extremely rare but I dont know if this is even good. Looks good enough.
Its a Philips 32PW8422/77
>>
>>12750587
You can use PS3 component cables, and you can use Xbox 360 component cables, which are even easier to find. Just grab a cheap scaler and you're all set. Unless you live outside the US (like I do), in that case you're screwed.
>>
>>12750553
>Is image persistance/"phosphor persistance" normal on a CRT?
No. try turning down the contrast. Most manufacturers had it cranked up way too high out of the box.

I adjusted the TV’s brightness. The PS2’s output is just garbage—what an ugly console, man. It was like playing on a crappy VCR from the ’80s. I know they wanted competitive prices, but they don’t have to go that low. You can do an HDD mod (7001), but it requires a type of soldering I don’t know how to do, and none of the techs here know how either.

to a point, yes. the chineseum being sold now breaks very easily. I try to get new old stock cables from the late 90s/early 2000s on ebay, even if they're aftermarket. much better build quality than amazon/aliexpress crap.

Renovating some rooms into a gaming room, so looking for a CRT now.

Any specific brands to look out for? I know Sony trinitron is sort of the gold standard, but thats about it. Not seeing a lot of those on marketplace by me, but am seeing tons of sanyo, JVC, and magnavox
>>
>>12753734
The supply isn't high enough to be very picky about brands. Generally JVC, Sony, Philips, Panny, Toshiba made good CRTS. When something comes up and has the inputs you're looking for, research the specific model then.
If you have public electronics recycling in your area check there for free ones. I'm going today and will update with what I find.
>>
>>12753734
Like the other guy said I wouldn't really focus on brands. A trinitron with 70,000 hours isn't necessarily as desirable as something else with lower hours.
>>
>>12753585
If it can matter for RF, it definitely matters for any other video output.
>>
>>12753759
This is a good list, I'd also recommend not sleeping on Sanyo, some of their sets were decent.

I understand that but you know what I'm gonna do it right now, I'm sick of these bozos adding useless results to my searches. I'm going to make ISO posts for retro video games, TVs and everything, as a bunch of keywords so it ends up in every search. I'll say paying over pricecharting value etc just to see what's out there. I'm not gonna buy it obviously just want to piss somebody off. I'll say buying gold @ 110% melt value and just see if people respond. I never use searches to look for buyers, only list things when I want them gone. I'm so fucking sick of resellers.

I procured a free sony 40" CRT TV with a weird ass stand back in my army days. It took 3 soldiers to confidently move that thing, I moved it exactly three times. Once into a storage unit. Once out of the storage unit down to my rental moving truck. I was gonna keep it, but there were only 2 of us moving it down the second time and it sucked so much I gave it away to a couple of dudes that happened to be also moving stuff at the storage facility. The last time I moved it was into those dude's truck XD.

I kinda feel bad for them because they said they had to move it up a long flight of stairs from the street to their house too. In retrospect, as I'm looking for a CRT tv now, I have zero regrets getting rid of that thing.

I'm thinking 14"-20" is my limit for one if I ever find one. Honestly, flatscreens are a godsend of video technology. CRT was kinda crazy if you wanted a bigger tv.

I have some random logitech box speakers. If youre not an audio autist I'd say get some cheap $30 'vintage/retro' ones off ebay. Speakers are one of those things that haven't really advanced much in the past 30 years, and still use the same inputs.
Newer ones are usually just more power efficient, but sound wise I think brand matters more than age.
>>
>>12755818
I own both of these sets for desktop use:
>Studio monitor hear everything mixing tier:
https://us.adam-audio.com/products/d3v

>Generic stereo listening tier:
https://edifier-online.com/collections/speakers/products/edifier-r1280db

The adam audio d3v's are monitors, so most people won't like them (I use for mixing) but they are god tier for budget desktop studio monitors. Great for hearing intricacies in audio that get muddied up with factory EQ tweaks. I got them when my bose companion 5's finally started acting up, which were WAY BETTER for listening.

This just means you can't buy most of the CRTs on Buyee, they're all more or less listed as junk so when they get sent state side they're considered e-waste with precious minerals so they take it. CRTs can still be exported and imported they just need to be listed for reuse.
