Why does this have such a serious cult around it? Is it just mental illness?

Why?
>>

If you are into serious gaming discussion you are constantly having to argue with its autistic fans that it is not the videogames citizen kane. It is not that it's bad per se it is that its fans treat it as a work of gaming history.

>Why does this have such a serious cult around it? Is it just mental illness?
I guess people like “unlocking” sections of a map but it’s overall just a cheaper experience as compared to a game like Legend of Zelda where the dungeons are structured in a sequence as opposed to giving the player essentially one dungeon with boss rooms to unlock as opposed to each boss having their own dungeon/level, etc.
For me that’s a huge problem because if you aren’t like a neet or a little kid with unlimited time the game wastes a lot of time where you can’t do things that would work IRL because of ‘game logic’ (you can’t just go through X or Y area randomly… you need the blue key first, blah blah blah) which leads to a fuckload of backtracking and spamming random items at walls and random spots. This is really boring because unless you have a strategy guide it’s just going screen by screen and randomly using items to find a pre-made solution. In a lot of ways that’s the major flaw of Castlevania 2 as opposed to 1, 3 or 4 on the snes: it requires the player to “solve puzzles” that are simply random trial and error.
Combine that with having to step away from the game and needing to remember what you were doing (unless you’re a kid or a neet, as mentioned) means that the core ‘gameplay’ is running around and spamming items at walls until you get a new item to go back and test in every room.
Oh and break out the graph paper to track your position because the map in these games is treated like a spooky secret.
Overall the fans of these types of games are just stupid. They confuse backtracking with exploration and spamming random items as “creative puzzle solving”.

Yeah spooky.
The INTRO is fantastic and then everything after is progressively downhill.
In many ways it’s like a Nolan flick, the first few watches are a fun spectacle but the actual material is weak and the “fans” are fans of the spectacle.
Fans of “metroidvania” are basically like fans of the jokah, babee. They want the same thing, over and over, and want to act like anyone who derides their comic-book tier nonsense as “not getting it”, after all, da jokah won an oscah! Etc.

Good enough Metroid thread to ask:

Currently playing the Prime 1 demake, have been running around searching for the next area but can't seem to find it.
>west Phendrana Drifts gated by fire on both points
>east Phendrana Drifts gated by a statue, already used for something else
>furthest west Magmoor Caverns blocked off by fire and bower bombs
>west Magmoor Caverns gated by narrow floor ceiling spikes (expecting that to be 3DS power bomb launch move)
>middle Magmoor Caverns gated by power bombs
>upper Tallon Overworld gated by stronger ice/glass
>east Tallon Overworld blocked by fire
>upper east Chozo Ruins gated by fire and power bombs for the tunnel, and a locked door up top
Spiderball, Super Missiles, Spazer, and Wavebuster were the last few items I remember getting in my last session.

I suppose it's mostly nostalgia for me.

But still, the things I like(d) about it:
- The atmosphere and music were the best I had seen in any game until then, both the beginning and the ending in particular are fantastic
- the controls are pretty good (better than many much younger games)
- Figuring out how to traverse certain areas, how to get to certain secrets etc. was fun
- Very few games convey such a sense of becoming a stronger, better version of what you were in the beginning. RPG's like FF just have you do flashier attacks and you see higher damage numbers pop up, in Doom or MegaMan you get stronger weapons, but blasting through areas that used to be scary with screw attacks and super sprints just hits different

If you're a metroidvania fan it's still somehow one of the best in the genre even today, and that's including the entirety of video games that have been released since. I personally prefer the Castlevania "Igavanias" but I'd still put Super Metroid somewhere close to the top of the list for the genre. They hit all the right notes and it's survived the test of time. Simple as that.

But if you're talking about the tendie manchildren who hype it up as some godly experience that everyone must worship, those faggots haven't even played any other metroidvanias, no different from the FF7 fanatics who have never played any other RPGs, and should just be ignored.

I have the same opinion about Symphony of the Night. Obviously both games are good, but I don’t understand why people need to go to such lengths to convince people on the internet that they are The Greatest Games Ever. It’s weird.
>>
>>12752348
Casualized may be the word you are looking for since it isn't "dumbed down" except for the inclusion of an ingame map which isn't even the "I win" function every /vr/ fag thinks it is since you still have to find hidden passages and items that aren't always made clear on the map itself. Hell, half the faggots I see talk about this game complain about having to actually find shit.
Although the only thing that's casualized is the fact that you have save points that can revive you and at a more reasonable amount of health. It saves you time on grinding and allows you to actually play the game quicker.
I swear practically a quarter of my time playing the original Metroid is just me killing the same enemy that pops out of a pipe over and over again.

I don't notice that nearly as much. There's always the lingering Mike Matteis of the board who can't help but blow a gasket and make an obnoxious thread declaring Genesis to have "no good games" because someone triggered them by liking Sonic more than Mario. But I think most of us oldfags like games from both now because we've exhausted the libraries over years and had to play both. what has largely taken it's place is people shitting on 80s and early 90s games in general to prop up later ones, especially GameCube fags and Dreamcast fags because those consoles have been deemed "underrated" apparently since everyone older naturally has more nostalgia for PS2 and Xbox because they were simply more popular, but not discluded either here, I just notice a lot more shit posting from those particular ones

Along with the first Quake, Super Metroid is probably one of the most pure examples of a video game in the history of video games. It succeeds in the major aspect of being a finally tuned game in and of itself, but it also ties together presentation and atmosphere, sound design, and a minimal story told via the environment that takes the player out of the game as little as possible.

There are other games which might have better gameplay, or a more interesting story, or a better done soundtrack; there are virtually none that combine all of those together into the grand show to make something that's such a quintessential example of a video game. I'd challenge anyone in this thread to post something that can match Super Metroid's design as a whole.
>>
>>12748941
It's an easy, casual game where you have tons of health, enemies aren't much of an obstacle, bosses aren't that hard. Killer atmosphere and exploring is fun for people who like wandering around a big map, getting lost. Then you beat it, and somehow end up learning that you get the best ending by speedrunning. That's when you get to have fun interacting with the platforming mechanics and thinking about routes. That is, the game introduces people to speedrunning, that explains autists getting attached to it, and autists have cult-like obsession with their favorite franchises.
>>
>>12756472
It's literally the same as Zelda but sideways

Zoomers are just confused by it because they don't get sideways games and because they never saw the movie Aliens
>>
>>12756487
No one working on the franchise right now has watched any Alien movie. That's the only explanation for the state of modern Metroid, since it looks like modern sci-fi shit instead of looking like old-school sci-fi stuff
>>
>>12752605
>>12748941

Wow the janitors are on a tear today. I had a pretty normal non troll post talking about how I've still never beat it along with LttP because I played both franchises on NES but then more importantly Gameboy and neither of the SNES entries felt different enough that I kept playing either. Why that was deleted I have no idea, but whatever.

To answer that question, I don't think Metroud 2 is better exactly, but like LA it feels like the next leap in the series to me still. And yes, as not great as SotN is in certain ways, I think it's a lot more fun than SM.
>>
>>12758839
If someone played the original Zelda or Metroid before the SNES ones and enjoyed them it seems pretty logical that they might find the SNES entries lacking, the same way fans of Super Metroid often feel the GBA games aren't as good because of the increases linearity. It's all relative, I was used to having an in game map so going backwards didn't add anything for me it just made a more taxing experience for something I already experienced. Both SM and LttP feel more like modernizations rather than actual sequels.

SotN, I still haven't played it despite having played a lot of the ps1 catalog, and being a fan of Classic Castlevania entries. I want to but what I know about it makes me hesitant, mainly the apparent ease of the game/OPness of the player and RPG elements that for me, always take away rather than give to action adventure type games, I just get flashbacks to card collecting in Kingdom hearts on GBA or Techno Fairy shit in MMZ that I did not enjoy. Even if it's shit that isn't necessary to focus on, it annoys my OCD having unnecessary mechanics that a game insists upon placing front and center
>>
>>12758926
That's fair. And part of it for me is that I liked Metroid and Zelda well enough but wasn't a massive fan of either, so after Metroid 2 more of it wasn't super appealing and I've also never beat another Zelda game either. Castlevania on the other hand is a series I overall really like and was an unironic fan of Simon's Quest, so take this with that bias.

Part of what I really like about SotN is that while yes you can basically turn on cheat mode with the right combo of items and kill everything including Drac in seconds at most while being heal and heart bombed, there are also a ton of other ways to play it. The game is full of wacky joke or less efficient but fun weapons and if you want to, it can be decently challenging. I think it's boatloads of fun.

The thing with SotN
>>
>>12748941
>Why does this have such a serious cult around it?
I suppose because it's 99% "pure" gameplay, no bullshit walk-and-talk scenes like most modern games have to shoehorn exposition or politics, etc. It's very refreshing in that way; a game not about story but proper gameplay and exploration.
>>
>>12759339
>I suppose because it's 99% "pure" gameplay, no bullshit walk-and-talk scenes like most modern games have to shoehorn exposition or politics, etc.

So why it specifically and not the hundreds of other 4th gen games that also fit that description?
>>
>>12759356
It's a lot better than average at being that sort of game.

How is it not? You're mentally ill. These threads have nothing to do with genuinely critiquing a game and everything to do with your insecure ego needing attention for "standing away from the pack" for rebelling against its popularity. You are genuinely mentally ill.
>>
>>12748941

It's just fun. I just logged around a 2:25 True Completion RT in casual private play btw, much better than my old results. I've built a private spreadsheet of the complete map and I now have a detailed personal knowledge of exactly how many doors, map tiles etc must be cleared.

This will either be something that bugs me or doesn't depending on how it is. I'll compare to Super Metroid, in which some people claim it's really hard and others claim it's really easy, but that's because it likewise has options. However, SMs options are very cut and dry, the game is full of upgrades....but you have to spend as much time exploring as you do facing objectives to get enough to actually buff you to the point where you're a match for bosses without conserving ammo and carefully dodging

Basically, you gotta work for it. If I turn on SotN, and the option basically comes down to a self cripple, I'm going to enjoy that less because much like in Mega Man, I'll probably end up doing challenge runs, but when I'm initially experiencing it trying to be blind as possible, my OCD ass isn't going to be able to not just try to optimize my chances by just doing what works best as I would in any game.

What Super Metroid does well is well known. If you think other games do it better, it's kinda on you to make a case for them, otherwise it just comes off as petulant bitching because you're mad people enjoy something you don't

A good thread would be
>I think this game is better than Super Metroid, here's why
A bitchy passive aggressive thread is
>Ugh, why do people like Super Metroid again?

Or at the very least, even if you're too scared to name games you like, you could at least give real analytical criticism of what problems you have, just whining like a bitch because you're scared of getting criticism back is annoying shithead behavior, like hiding behind your mom while you make faces at a kid you hate but are actually scared they can beat you up
>>
>>12760473
>What Super Metroid does well is well known.
This is what makes the entire thread an obvious and dishonest grift copying a format of critique from other games. Even if someone personally doesn't care for SM, the game's unique merits are very clear and explainable, and there isn't any other game of this type that has your abilities all physically synergize and work with the overall structure of the game in the same way. There's no 'mystery' as to why it's loved, the fanbase is clearly able to point to why it's a classic with little ambiguity.

>>12759083
>>12760439
Check out SotN if you want, it's not a huge investment, but I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if you react to it how out basically expect to. It pretty much feels like a game designed like it was conceived by a 'that kid' who wanted to put whatever random cool idea he thought up into it, and did exactly that and shoved it in however without bothering to think that much about creating a cohesive game experience. SM in contrast is just so obviously the product of professional design requiring discipline that an armchair director wouldn't be capable of.

>It pretty much feels like a game designed like it was conceived by a 'that kid' who wanted to put whatever random cool idea he thought up into it, and did exactly that and shoved it in however without bothering to think that much about creating a cohesive game experience.
I think that's very much because SoTN followed on a canceled Castlevania title and in large part was built from its leftovers (and many of Rondo's leftovers). Also that they realized they could do even more with CD format than they could with Rondo, and they went kinda nuts and in experimental directions.

It's a good and fun game, but you can tell that it's messily put together. The second castle for instance feels like an idea that they came up with and started work on fairly late in development, hence why it wasn't workshopped and refined more to a better experience.
It's awesome that they threw something like that in at all, and that it was even kinda hidden, but moving around the upside down castle is often kind of annoying, it feels like some spaces really weren't made with it properly in mind (which I suppose works in its own way).

The GBA and DS Igavanias are (largely) much more tightened and refined takes on the SoTN formula, they dialed in the focus and showed better restraint.

>SM in contrast is just so obviously the product of professional design requiring discipline that an armchair director wouldn't be capable of.
True. That said, I have probably replayed SM about as much as I have SoTN.

How would you compare the GBA ones to Super Metroid?

Funny considering autism didn't exist until Gen z, yet that's where the haterbase is

Zoomers just want to ape millennial nostalgia but get salty about shit from before 97 or so because they weren't born and can't pretend they remember it like they do other shit that came out when they were 1-5
