>>12752660If I remember right, NES and SNES were becoming retro cool and hip to collect for around the early 2000s (hence all the ports to GBA), but collecting was a much smaller, niche, nerdy thing to do. The real hardcore people were over at places like Assembler dumpster diving behind game studios. Normies (influencers and flippers) didn't get into retro collecting until the 2nd half of the 2010s. From there, it slowly morphed into a hustle. The only retro markets that remain "pure" are the pre-Nintendo ones that normies don't care about like Atari, Coleco, home computers, etc.Before those people showed up in droves bragging about "hidden gems", you actually used to be able to go to a random Goodwill and find some cool stuff.As for N64 and anything "3D", it was explicitly not seen as retro until arguably the 2010s when the millennials who grew up with it had some spending cash. It was just last gen, and for some reason people always hock their last gen for pennies on the dollar and flood the used market with ample supply. Interestingly enough, when N64 was at rock-bottom prices, Mario Party 3 was harder to find and fairly expensive because it was such a late release.
