What are /vr/'s recommended or fav sports games? I know they're mostly not liked here, but there has to be some games that are more notable to play outside of the 2000's happening of yearly major sports titles. Mutant League Hockey, Fight Night 1, THPS, Amped, 1080 snowboarding, and NBA Street Vol 2 are pretty top ones for me.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater is basically if 3D Sonic was good. I'm not even sure they should count as sports games.
>>12755373I'm only really counting it under "extreme sports" really. Games like 1080 are certainly more geared towards racing. At least Amped was more trick style. Thrasher Skate and Destroy was more skater-esque than THPS I think.
>>12755371Windjammers & Heavy Smash
>>12755393I'll add em to the list. I'd like to snag some good titles I've never played and would like to make a thread after I've played them.
>>12755371There was a time where midway was cranking out some good ones like NBA Jam and NBA Hangtime. They had graphics made like Mortal Kombat and were stuffed with cheese like being able to break the backboard and go "ON FIRE".I also liked NFL blitz but that's like a 3d game and I played it a lot less.
>>12755453Seconding windjammers
>>12755371I hate ball sports luckily hockey uses a puck and not a ball (unless it's street hockey like pic rel)
>>12755371Super Baseball 2020 is right up there with the Mutant League games as the best alt rules sports games. I'd suggest sticking with the Neo Geo CD version over the other ones for various reasons.

>>12756768The NeoGeo Kunio dodgeball game is also pretty good.
>>12755371Played so fucking much NBA Jam with my big brother on MD in the 90s. PUTS UP A BRICK NO GOOD BOOM SHAKALAKA HE'S HEATING UP HE'S ON FIRE
Baseball Stars 2 Neo GeoNeo Turf Masters Neo GeoMario Golf GBC and GBABlades of Steel NESlots of suggestions I would have posted already in this threadgood thread
>>12755371Winning Eleven 2002 is peak football/soccer /vr/ for me, especially because it's probably the retro title, besides the PS2 titles like Pro Evolution Soccer 6 of course, that gets the most modern patches by the community to play with current squads and kits. I've played some World Cup 2026 on PepeWEmx's patches, looking into playing some UEFA Champion League next.
Did anyone else play any of the Hardball games? I went from Baseball Stars to Hardball III and it felt like the next step in terms of building a team and playing a whole season. The play by play commentary felt really ahead of its time too.And then Hardball '94 came out and I was super hyped but it didn't feel as balanced despite the deeper customization. It was also the first baseball game I played that had the three division wildcard setup which also put me off.
>>12755371NHL hitz on GBA is very good, nba jam tier
I've no idea how well has picrel stood the test of time, but I used to have lots of fun playing against my brother back in the day. I was fond of bitching to the referee and managing to scrape an extra point here and there.https://youtu.be/X-FnQLVO4IUPower Spikes was another pretty good (proper) volleyball game, this one on the arcades.
Did other (non-US) countries make games featuring national sports stars?
I vote for this one on arcade/PS1>>12756563Doesn't the CD version just add things like reverb to the music?

>>12759609>Doesn't the CD version just add things like reverb to the music? Most importantly it removes the timer that's in the Neo Geo version so you don't have to keep hitting the credits button every five minutes. I've played the hell out of all 4 versions of Super Baseball 2020 and here are some other differences I've noticed:>Neo GeoWould be the best version if not for the timer. I could never find a way to disable it even in MVS mode and with Free Play enabled. Someone tell me if I'm missing something.>Neo Geo CDBasically the same as the cart version without the timer and it has CD music.>SNESSome things are missing like jump zones and the field mines. It also has less frames of animation than the Genesis one.>GenesisIt isn't missing anything and now you can tap a button to run faster on the bases, which makes the game a lot easier. The colors are uglier though and somehow it's a lot choppier than the SNES one.
>>12759817I used to own the game on AES, never had issue with the timers but there is probably a unibios cheat for infinite time and credits. Though CD is fine as it only loads once at boot.
>>12759817>Would be the best version if not for the timer. You can set it to 29 mins in the soft dip and there are MAME and UniBIOS cheats (as >>12759836 said) for infinite time.
>>12755371>I know they're mostly not liked hereThis was never true. Only youtube retro gamers who pander to collectors hate sport games because they are common and hold no value, except mario sport games which are praised because nintendo cult. You really can't talk genesis retro gaming without recognizing its dominance in sportsball (and puck).
>>12755371this game is unironically unplayable I usually don't mind low framerate in retro shit but god damn
>>12758343I played a lot of other titles during this FIFA World Cup besides WE2002, even if not as good, no FIFA title oddly enough.>David O'Leary Total Soccer 2000 (GBC)>TECMO World Cup '92 (Mega Drive)>TECMO World Cup '93 (Master System)>TECMO World Cup Soccer (NES)>World Cup Italia '90 (Master System)I miss when we had a dozen of titles to choose frow, now it's FIFA/EA FC, eFootball, UFL and Goals, all mainly online PvP.
>>12759886>>12760773Nice, thanks. I didn't know unibios added that kind of functionality.
>>12757373Any time something in a game involves throwing something a long distance, I still hear FROM DOWNTOWN in my head.
>>12761350>unibiosit also allows you to set the machine to AES mode, which gets rid of the timer as well
i am shilling Tecmo Super Bowl as a perfectly fun game even if you didn't grow up watching handegg or aren't even american. japanese developer so they knew what to do.
