Just found a pretty nice 2600 for a decent price today, what are the best games for this console? What am I in for? I have never played anything older than the NES.
>>
>>12759010
if that's the one you found that rules. Paddle games are cool because there's nothing really like them today; Kaboom, Warlords, Video Olympics. Lots of great single screen shoot em ups; Galaxian, Beamrider, Carnival. A lot of great titles are arcade ports, so some people see no value in those now, but there's some really fun gameplay to be had if you have the inclination. Also there's a fair amount of "first/early home version of a Japanese game", weird ports like Mappy and Buck Rogers.
>>
>>12759010
Very nice find on the heavy sixer. Some of the licensed games like Gremlins are interesting half-way points between several games but also have a distinct veneer of polish. Anyway, you can't go wrong with most Activision games, >>12759202 named Kaboom which is an all time classic. Haunted House is another top notch game but just be aware of how the difficulty switch changes that one. Beginner difficulty is a tutorial, the real game is Expert for Haunted House. It's a game so good they kept remaking it for Wii and even Switch, but the original is timeless.
>>
>>12759209
Good call out on the difficulty switches in general, would definitely recommend reading the manuals for this era of games.
>>
>>12759202
not op but I've bought 3 pairs of paddle controllers and none of them have worked, be warned
>>
I liked pitfall and pitfall 2, frogger, and keystone capers

It is. I've been thinking of picking up a 2600 for half a year now and just stumbled across it, came with two paddle controllers, two joysticks, the OEM power supply, and a copy of missile command that is pretty clean too. Only damage to the unit is the orange paint around the ridge is worn and the front corner on the right side is a little worn, I haven't opened it up. Have very cloudy and vague memories playing pitfall with my grandpa when I was really young so I know I'll get that game, just looking for other recs so I get a holistic experience of the best the system has to offer in under 20 games if that's possible. Trying to find stuff that has aged well.
>>
>>12759010
A lot of the best games are most fun playing against another person, so call a friend or a sibling over to make a night of it. Warlords is great for this, Video Olympics can also be pretty fun, Outlaw is another good one.

For single player, I really like Vanguard and Dragonfire, but I haven't played either in 25 years so I dunno really.

ET isn't as bad as people say but it's not really great either. If you want to play it, read the manual. In fact, always read the manual in general, these games are not going to teach you how to play.
>>
>>12759392
People claimed ET was bugged and only needed a small fix to be legit, there is a romhack out there. Unocart and Harmony Cart are a thing so you can run romhacks if that is your thing.
>>
>>12759010
Defender is pretty good.

Also ikari warriors.. its basically the first halo game.

Most of the games are shite though. Its still neat as a collector item. I got a rom cart for mine to make using it a little bit easier.
>>
About the rom cart. Its called harmony cartridge. It uses a micro SD card. Once you read the special instructions to format it, you can easily load it with all the games from a single download. The site that has all the games is called atarimania.com.
>>
>>12759406
>ikari warriors
What the fuck, I never knew this got a 2600 port, that's crazy.

>>12759426
It got quite a few surprising ports and original/main target late games due to its successors all shitting the bed.

Of those I've played Commando, Fatal Run and Xenophobe. I guess Klax too, but it was the 90s so it was time for Klax and thus not surprising. Still the system feels best when you play the older short burst arcade games.

Adventure is my favorite

break it to bits and throw it in the trash. this thing sucks. doesn't even utilize the built in interrupt vectors of the 6502.
>>
>>12759658
The 2600's 6507 doesn't share the same interrupt architecture as the 6502
>>
montezuma's revenge
>>
>>12759232
You lucky bastard o7
As for games some of the ones I'd recommend Yars' Revenge, H.E.R.O, Joust, Frogger, Solaris, Berzerk and Enduro, and if you like homebrew games I'd get Pac-Man 4k or 8k and some Champ Games titles like Galagon, Gorf Arcade and Mappy
>>12759412
There's also the Unocart-2600 which is open source and can be found cheap on ebay and Aliexpress
>>
>>12759934
>13-bit address bus
>no IRQ's
i don't like this product, the tech was not ready for consumers
>>
Heres an interesting take. This YouTube suggests to keep the plain old rf output if your TV can accept it. Some of the composite mods dont really make it look any better.. . Though, I seen a fancy mod for atari 2600 called Tiara which is probably better. This video was enough to convince me I didnt need to do a composite mod on my 2600.

My favorite single player game as a kid was a game called GORF. Kind of a combination space invaders with other shooting games.
>>
>>12761035
Oh for homebrew I also forgot Draconian (Bosconian clone)
>>
>>12761035
>>12761329
also Donkey Kong VCS or the 4-level DK hack since the original 2600 DK sucks ass
>>
Definitely get Custer's Revenge.

>>12759010
>Just found a pretty nice 2600 for a decent price today
lol. no.
>>
>>12761772
It's a classic game and represents an era where developers had total freedom to do what they want without the platform controlling them.
>>
>>12761329
I know that gradient effect was super-easy on the 2600 but I still think stuff like that looks so damn cool
>>
>>12759202
> there's some really fun gameplay to be had if you have the inclination
Seems like most people enjoy playing Frogs and Flies 2P because it's so simple - there's equal challenge to hardcore gamers and casuals because it's a 2-3 button game.
Some other games no one has recommended yet
>Keystone Kapers
>Atlantis
>Air Sea Battle
>Space Invaders
>the Star Wars games
2600 is cool

Very nice indeed.

I've found some times this hardware needs a little cleaning and maintenance before it works well. Its not really advisable to attempt to turn that on with its original power brick.

check out some of these
in particular a lot of the imagic and activision games are rly good
if you turn on a game and have absolutely no idea whats going on, check for a manual online. atari controllers only had one button, so sometimes two controllers are used, and sometimes even the difficulty switches are involved too

also just play beamrider
its the best videogame
>>

What brand is that Video Computer Systemâ„¢?

>t. the kinda guy thats never touched a paddle game irl and cant even begin to comprehend that there was better analog control in the late 70s than there is now
>>
>>12766326
The only thing you need a paddle for is paddlin' with your father and having fun fishing, making good memories. If you missed that, too bad, your dad is a lazy piece of shit that was happy as long as you shut up and kept doing your own thing.
>>
>>12766304
pretty weird reaction to that post desu

that's a paddlin'

Completely inaccurate, nobody thinks this. Pong Sports is awesome.

Cool, I keep wanting to collect 2600 stuff but I never see anything in the wild where I am.
>>
>>12773135
OP back again, I have had terrible finding games locally but I found a guy on facebook that has a bunch of games where the labels have fallen off and they are in pretty bad shape for $50, should I go for it? What are the odds that none of them work? Can they be fixed easily?
>>
>>12773530
**terrible luck
>>
>>12759010
Air Sea Battle
>>
>>12773530
99% chance they all work perfectly; I've been "collecting" and playing 2600 stuff since I was 6-7 in the 90s, and I've literally never had a cartridge fail. The glue they used on the labels is dying across the board, some 3rd party games are even worse off in that area (Coleco published titles for instance). I generally try not to pay more than $5 for a 2600 cart; would also recommend a HarmonyCart if you're into that kind of thing, pretty cheap and very convenient.

video games didn't get good until the NES and stopped being good with the PS2/GC/Xbox

I hope you're right, these things look like absolute garbage, I'll go through them probably tomorrow and see what works and what doesn't, he said he found them in his barn when he was cleaning out, good news is he sold them for $30 when he realized there is a good shot that none of them work so if it is all garbage then I'm only out that amount.
>>
>>12774076
you shouldn't be complaining, that's a fantastic haul, you even got a handful of 5200 cartridges
how are the pins looking, corrosion-wise?
>>
>>12759010
>>12759479
There's a surprisingly competent port of Kung Fu that came out late in the 2600's life.
>>12771423
Because it's AI slop.

>>12774098
I've definitely seen worse, I'll take a closer look tomorrow when I test and clean them. Is there a good place to get replacement labels for all the carts that lost theirs? The 5200 games look the cleanest of the bunch, ofc I have no use for them.
>>
>>12765832
holding it down since 1977 my nigga
>>
>>12774076
>>12774120
Those should clean up just fine; you'll just need a lot of rubbing alcohol. Pretty good selection too, Phoenix is based. Some guys on AtariAge do replacement labels in their marketplace forum.
>>
>>12774076
Not a bad haul for $30. I recently saw a local Goodwill selling a pack of 3 carts for $10.
>>
>>12774076
sick find yo
>>
>>12773768
Out of the hundreds if not thousands of cartridges that have passed by me, the number of failures I can probably count on one hand ... one was a Neo Geo game I bought new (‸)

>>12774076
>found them in his barn
In my mind, potential for corrosion from exposure to elements, but the games are usually pretty hardy, plus the older games have the cover mechanisms to protect it. And if >>12774120 is representative of the lot, you should be fine. Just external grunge to clean off. Queue up some videos, and easy evening project.
>>
>>12777098
amen
>>

>a Neo Geo game I bought new
That's rough
>>
That's a VCS though
>>
>>12777295
Yes, an Atari 2600 VCS.
Not that shit that nu-Atari put out a few years back.
