It's weird that the series people say RE "stole" the formula from, later turned around and not only made an RE clone later, but a really mediocre and derivative clone too.
>>

G O D tier graphics, but boring pseudo REslop gameplay. I wish they kept the sandbox-y gameplay of AitD.

>RE "stole" the formula from
RE did, poorly.
>later turned around and not only made an RE clone later
Because it didn't have the staff original AitD had. The original AitD creator left and soulless fr*nch C-suites had zero idea what made that game such a success while its sequels are quickly forgotten. So they chased the flavor of the month, RE series.

I played the original trilogy, 1 is the only one that's "special" in that it's innovative, but it's also not particularly fun to play and people who suck its dick are addicted to novelty and care about it more than a game bring enjoyable. 2 is an actually shit game that's legit frustrating to play, and despite 3's formula being a direct reaction to the complaints about 2, is just a series of "you need this ONE item for this ONE room to kill its specific enemies without having to fight them"

RE may have stolen the formula but in the process made a better game.

The car was invented before Henry Ford, but Henry Ford made the car good.

>get David Gasman, a genuinely talented VA, to voice Carnby for NN
>the voice acting in the game is shit
It has to be poor direction, nothing else makes sense

Compare to what Ford sold at the time.

I feel like the only part that AitD could really hold some solid legal ground in saying they pioneered it was the camera because everything else was done before
>mansion setting
As others have said ciuntless times, haunted houses are such a staple of horror that they're a cliche, and besides the stories of the 2 games go in vastly different directions after that point.
>gameplay structure
Kinda. Thing is, AitD is a point n click more than anything, and instead of having a limited number of items you could hold they had it based on the weight of the items in question. They both have puzzles that like to kill you, but so did every adventure game that wasn't made by Lucasarts.
>like the monster breaking out of windows jumpscares
Which horror movies did before and is where AitD got it from
>or how opening the main mansion door will kill you
Isn't that directly taken from a Lovecraft story, where they couldn't go back because of something outside and had to go deeper into the house that they didn't want to be in? Though in AitD's case it was because a killer plant grew outside the door after they walked in, in RE's case it's because the dogs they ran from were still out there.

Are there a lot of similarities? Yeah, but AitD has a lot of similarity to horror films and novels in general so I have a feeling a lawsuit would be pretty damn weak outside of the fixed camera angles part.

>not particularly fun to play
That's a you problem. I used to play it blind as a 12 year old. Discovering cryptic items and themes is really fun. Combat is challenging and fun. I tried to kill everything with the sword hilt and kitchen knife before finding out I could throw a heavy statue at the plate armor enemy and take its sword. AitD 1 is actually more like a PnP RPG rather than point and click.
I also played RE1 and RE2 around the same time and didn't find the charm AitD had. They feel like glorified zombie shooters without any of the enjoyable combat, or puzzle games without any of the joy in having to learn the lore and experiment with things.
The setting is also absolutely lame. RE's plot is a lot like dumb D-tier Bruno Mattei flicks like Hell of the Living Dead. Alone in the Dark is inspired by colonial era European stories and myths like Voodoo, Cthulhu, The House of Usher, Island of Dr Moreau, The Phantom Ship, all that sort of stuff. It's just so much more colorful and interesting no matter how you see it.
>2 is an actually shit game that's legit frustrating to play
Get filtered. 2 is more fun than 1. The combat is absolutely cutthroat, a huge step up from 1. It's literally Die Hard in a survival horror mansion. Puzzles are a downgrade from 1, but there are still some great moments here and there.
>3
Never cared much about it. Found it boring.

You can easily make a derivative and uninspired work without infringing any IP. Still doesn't make it any less derivative.

>Posts car he'll never have even if he was an adult when it was new
If "luxury" alone makes something good, I guess iPhones are the premium gaming platform to have according to your stupid ass.
>>
>>12759469
>Get filtered. 2 is more fun than 1. The combat is absolutely cutthroat,
I don't believe you're bring earnest, I genuinely think you're either trolling, or you just have actually shit taste and thus there's no point in replying to you because you're so beneath my respect.
>>
>thread immediately starts with seething towards re for mogging aitd right out of the genre it pioneered
inferiority complex as usual eh
>>
>>12759478
I'm not a fan of AitD but it didn't die because of RE, it died because of chronic mismanagement from the publisher (a common occurrence in France) and every innovation it tried only made the series worse.

it looks like crap. oh you meant the remake. remake looks more like a graphic adventure game but in 3D. never played it. looks mid to me.

You say that, but Alone in the Dark was a good game from the beginning....sooooo, where does your argument go from here exactly?
>>
>>12761576
Dumbed down gameplay, dumbed down RE-like grid inventory system, dumbed down interactions, dumbed down movement system, even the character health/status display looks like RE's. It introduced a few unique mechanics, but ultimately it's more like RE than the original AitD.

well that hung my toaster. youtube is absolute cancer ever since they changed their UI and seem have added 1000 trackers per video. yes, even when i play it embedded on 4chins right here, even with Ublock Origin.
