Are retro split-screen multiplayer games better than modern ones?
Naw.. it's just different

Are there modern split screen games?Do people even still play video games on the same room, other than tourney culture?
>>12761430there are modern port of retro games that have split screen and some indies, quake on PS4/5 lets you play in split screen and also games like cult of the lamb.
>split-screenFuck no. Besides when it works well in games like Puyo-Puyo, it usually just leads to a cramped screen, a hit to performance, and shit like RPGs where one person opens a full-screen menu to adjust gear/skills and the other has to wait.Link cable games like C&C or Doom, pass-the-controller games like Worms, or same screen mp like Bomberman and ISS are superior experiences.
>>12761423Yeah retro ones are way better because modern ones force you to create a fucking sony or microsoft account just to play local co-op.I went to my friend's place a few weeks ago and he offered to play split screen online multiplayer on the new modern warfare 3 remaster on his PS5. But it wouldn't let us play split screen online because I didn't have an activision account or some shit. So we decided to play local split screen multiplayer instead and it STILL said I had to make some stupid account on some online service, so we gave up since I didn't wanna give my email and phone number to some random company. So then we decided to play co-op campaign on the new halo remaster together. And AGAIN it wouldn't let us play LOCAL SPLIT SCREEN through the campaign mode until I made a microsoft account. I really wanted to check out this new halo remaster so I gave in and made a burner microsoft account with a burner email. It just ended up being a big hassle and wasted like 20 minutes of our time, but we did eventually get to play the campaign together.15 years ago, I remember going to a friend's house and being able to play split screen online multiplayer on his xbox 360 (the exact same game, the original MW3) and I don't recall having to make a microsoft account. I just played as the "guest" account and his xbox 360 didn't care.>tl;dr retro split screen >>>>> modern split screen

I'd say it peaked during the 360 days with Gears, FUSE, Halo and so on. Nowadays split screen is rare because they push the hardware to the limit or at least the dev's limit. For retro I am partial to sharing one screen like with beatemups. Shrek 2 was great for this.
