Any of you play this before? It worth going through the trouble tracking down the english translation? Kojima made it.

I gave it a go back when the translation was released, thinking it'd be a Snatcher spiritual successor. It turned out to be an American buddy cop visual novel seen through a Japanese lens, so I quickly got bored and stopped playing.

Great art. One of Kojima's weakest stories, which is especially bad here since it's not that great of an adventure game either. Starts promising, falls flat quick. At least it allows you to fondle the breasts of nearly every female character in the game, and Kojima wrote tons of boob-related dialogue to go along with it.

It's alright. It felt like a step down from Snatcher to me personally, it's more an interactive visual novel than anything else. And it was great to see Kaneto Shiozawa (he plays Tony Redwood), one of the best seiyuu of his era, one last time before he tragically down a flight of stairs and lost his life.

fell* down, I meant. Not like he was pushed or anything. He died the next day of a cerebral contusion after thinking he was fine.

I enjoyed Snatcher but I couldn't finish this one, found it quite unappealing.

God Policenauts sucks! It's like a really bad Visual Novel. And I don't know, seriously, VN are like the easiest thing in the world to design. So when you design a bad one, that is remarkable.

Like the entire story of Policenaughts is not only a pixel hunt, but you basically have to try everything, and then try everything multiple times. So if you don't know this, like if you want to know about some photograph, you ask about the photograph, and she tells you something, and then you have to ask the same topic again. So that photograph entry can occur 3 or 4 times. And then you have to start from the beginning and try them all again because the third time might have opened something new up. And you have to exhaust every single option. ALL OF THEM. Before the game will let you move on. That is HORRIBLE.

It's not like an oldschool adventure game. Because in an adventure game you don't have to look at and inspect everything on the screen multiple times. You're just sitting there, desperately wanting to move on with the plot, and then you're stuck trying to inspect every little thing over and over again, and asking people the same questions over and over again. Ah it's bad. And when it finally gets exciting, it gets exciting for 20 seconds then you're right back at it.

Is the plot interesting? Not really. You know what the story is? It is 5% Blade Runner, 95% Lethal Weapon. It's straight up Riggs and Murtaugh. It's not even subtle. He rips off whole scenes. It's amazing.

Snatcher was way better, i love the world building of Policenauts but the story itself isn't any good, and the main character isn't likeable like Gillian either

This anon is right on the money.

Just one minor tidbit : if there is ONE thing that Policenauts does pretty well, it’s the atmosphere of a 90s sci-fi anime show. If you like Cowboy Bebop, well don’t expect something of the same quality but at least you will get some good vintage SF vibes. Otherwise, skip the game.

Just play it in Japanese.

I wanted to play this too as I’m a big Kojima fan. This thread made me sad and now I’m going to ask Claude to detail the story for me and just take it for what it is. Maybe put playthroughs on as background noise while doing dishes.

Snatcher is much better.

FWIW I think its better than anons here are selling it. the art, music, and worldbuilding are great. Yeah the two buddy cops are lethal weapon ripoffs, but there's other characters who I think are great. There is more gameplay besides pixel hunting and exhausting dialogue. tons of hot babes you can grope. Yeah its not as good as snatcher, but I definitely think its worth playing. a claude summary of the plot isnt going to give you anything worthwhile, like I said the major plotline is the weakest part of the game.

>you have to exhaust every single option
I don't like that style either, but it's not unique to Policenaughts. Practically every Japanese "adventure" game from 1985 to 1999 is like that
In Japanese they call it 総当りADV "round-robin adventure" because you hit every combination of commands like a round-robin tournament
