Mario Kart and F-Zero are the only 16 bit racing games that allow full 360 movement, and can be considered 'actual' racing games in the 16 bit era.

Every other racing game on the snes and genesis library, games like Outrun and TopGear, ect are "conveyer belt" racing games, that offer a limited pseudo amount of control, but are hardly more advanced than 8bit racing games. You dont even really control your vehicle, simply pressing the gas makes the map move, and left/right keeps you 'on track' in an extreme on rails manner, the is gameplay, very shallow.

I've looked for other games that play like mario kart and f-zero, racing games that offer true freedom of movement on the genesis and snes, but these seem to be the only two games that allow this.

Two games, in a sea of hundreds? that can do this? Really?

Try Street Racer. Rock n Roll Racing and Biker Mice from Mars kinda do too, you can drive backwards if you want. They're both isometric though, but still fun.

Dear troll,

Many of those "conveyor belt" racing games you alluded to are more fun to plan than the alternatives.

BTW, you cited only two mode-7 racing games, but there are quite a few more, Street Racer, Suzuka 8 Hours, Battlecars, Rider's Spirits and Drift King Shutokou Battle '94, to name some of them. There are also a few polygonal racers such as Dirt Racer, Dirt Trax FX and Stunt Race.

Overall, you give the impression of a troll who couldn't really be bothered properly researching what you were trolling about, either that or you deliberately neglected the facts in order to extenuate the bait.

I did a quick skim of non import snes racers in my rom set, pretty sure I hit all of the mode seven racers. There was definitely follow up on nintendo's mode seven blueprint that said most don't really come close to F-zero/mariokart. they're usually some combination of amateur presentation, jank feel, poor performance, or being kind of shallow or plodding. seems like mode seven ended up being a template that a smattering of mid developers
attempted.
that said a few stood out:
>F1 Pole Position, Suzuka 8 hours
very solid sim games. full 360 turning. delivers what's advertised with no caveats. in a better world every sim game on the snes would have been like this instead of a landmine of shovelware.
>F1-ROC II
the presentation is a bit suspect but otherwise an extremely fast, solid arcade racer. feels like a faster less refined f-zero. sort of generic unknown game a kid would treasure.

hard driving is a good example because the Mega Drive was better at rendering polygons than the Snes mostly down to the faster VRAM since the CPU has to draw into the tiles
fun fact: starfox runs faster when you overclock the snes CPU rather than the SuperFX because the Snes takes longer to display a frame than the Superfx does to render it! The superfx has to copy its framebuffer into a tiny 8-bit data bus that the CPU is already using for other tasks

Of all the retro games, racing games have probably aged the poorest. Not to say games like Mario Kart/Outrun aren't fun, it's just that the genre benefited the most from the advancement of 3d gaming as apposed to something like sidescrollers.
>>
>>12763691
I dunno if I'm dense but why would you want 360 full movement in a racing game where you're supposed to hit the finish line as fast as possible? I mean, in games like Gran Turismo I sure can turn 360 or 180 degrees and drive in reverse but it's technically superfluous because that function serves no purpose in a racing game. Outrun: Coast 2 Coast perfected the "conveyor belt" formula anyway so it's not inherently flawed to have that style of racing game.

I can only think of games like Twisted Metal and Destruction Derby were 360 movement and driving in reverse might serve a purpose
>>
>>12771634
yes you are dense, 360 movement is just shorthand for saying this game simulates a racing track fully without any onrails limitation. you can corner a turn completely in control instead of it being a canned illusion.
>>
>>12771634
You can model spin outs without silly dust clouds and dizzy drivers with spirals in their eyes
>>
>>12771706
Then OP is dense because he is mixing up technical limitations with two completely different genres. One is a racing track style racing game like rally games mario kart with "highway" games like Need For Speed and Outrun
>>
>>12771634
>I dunno if I'm dense but why would you want 360 full movement in a racing game
Because it shows that the entire track is modeled the entire time, and you have full freedom of movement, i.e. it's an actual fucking raciing game with a real track modeled in its entirety. Outrun is a linear game where the track is faked , every couple of frames.

>>12771870
See above. Rail/conveyor belt racers are not real racing games. Games like outrun are the vidya equivalent of these old analogue toys from the 80s you simply turned the car from one side of the screen to the other
>>
Lol, lmao even, fucking outrun toddlers

OutRun uses a 3D engine, which was confirmed by Yu Suzuki in an interview. The sprites just trick you into thinking it’s 2D. You can go offroad to cut across sections of track if you know what you’re doing.

>>12772143
>>12772146
What is wrong with you idiots
>>
>>12772104
>a real track modeled in its entirety.

Not even close. You can't get out of the car and hit the track with a chisel to break a chunk out of it. You can't smell it. You can't stay on it until night falls and watch the stars to identify that you are indeed in the part of the world where the track is supposed to be located. It is 99.99997% fake, and you are praising it for being entirely real when some other game's track is 99.99998% fake and therefore in your view completely unreal.

A game could do a 100% perfect simulation of a race down to the sub-quark, so perfect that it could actually be used to predict the future because everything that happens on it if the player just doesn't do anything and lets the demo mode run is exactly what would happen in reality, and as long as it were for some reason presented in awkward, 2D-looking, NES-level tile-based graphics at 14 FPS you would say it's fake and far less real than F-Zero, because you are an idiot.
>>
>>12772181
I am just stating the truth. Nintendo just was good at using established arcade game mechanics from other people and casualizing them so it fits better to console gamers. They basically were the link between arcades and home consoles in terms of developers.

outrun is a great game for what it is, a traffic dodging sim. the problem is that outrun was all devs could do with a forward perspective so you had racing games where the main interest of the concept is particulars of the track and turning being pigeonholed into a format not suited for it.

The track is a flat 2D background image. Nothing is modelled.
Your kart isn't driving anywhere. It's a stationary, animated sprite and the 2D background scales and rotates to give the illusion of movement.
It's a good illusion, if you can stomach how dreadfully flat everything is, but it's not at all dissimilar to how games like Outrun and Road Rash operate.

i fucking love scripted qte jumps!
>>
>>12772760
Yeah, in Micro Machines the helicopters "elevate" to go above/below obstacles too.

>>12772806
and yeah, Lakitu comes to fish you back onto the track in MK when you go off drops and water, etc. too. Outrun is just more quick on resets because it's an arcade game that doesn't waste time with reversing away from obstacles some tit has crashed into, or getting out of sand traps.

Besides the mode 7 background scaling and rotating, MK and F-0 aren't that special, m8.

>>12772932
You'd love MK then. Plenty of tracks featuring walled-off sections with forced jumps
>>
>>12772939
>Besides the thing that makes them special they're not special
they offered a reasonable approximation of racing with forward depth, up until that point no game had managed that combo of gameplay and conducive presentation.

That's a bad example. Slot cars actually move and the track is a 3D object, so it's more applicable to polygonal racers, aka the place where vidya racing actually begins properly.

>Super Mario Kart - a flat road rug is rolled out completely but the layout is fixed. The car doesn't actually travel anywhere. A kid sits behind his car and focuses closely and solely on the space it occupies, and pulls and rotates the track under the car to make it seem as though the car is moving. If the child imagines a part of the rug is a jump pad, he lifts the car up and pulls the rug back to simulate the car jumping
>scalers - A kid sits behind his toy car as it sits on a partly woven road rug and focuses closely and solely on the space it occupies. The car doesn't actually travel anywhere. Weavers in front create a potentially endless road rug based on a planned design, using varying thickness to create elevation, that is pulled under the car to make it seem as though the car is moving, and once the rug goes behind the child's vision it is unwound to be reused. If there was a ramp on the track, the child lifts the car up and the rug is pulled under while still creating fresh track to simulate the car jumping

It's all the same gimmick, brother, the same illusion. It's all kids playing on rugs with toys.

>>12773132
super mario kart simulates the 2 dimensional aspect of a racing game which for the purposes of an arcade racer is sufficient. you have momentum and a turning radius and must practice racing fundamentals to go through turns. outrun clones don't offer this.
>>
>>12772846
>goalpost moving
mario kart and f-zero have no elevation, you retarded faggot
>>
>>12773184
it's a nice visual flourish but has limited gameplay utility. it's not systematic in the way mario kart's advantages are.

>>

Why the fuck would I want to jump and leap with a car? I guess Gran Turismo is also inferior to Mario Kart because there are no bouncing cartoonish catapults in the track that I can jump over leap over entire parts of the track. Your retard arguments made me kek hard

that mario kart and f-zero don't have, you imbecile
and jumping has nothing to do with track elevation either, so fuck off with your goalposts
>>
>>12773581
op was retarded to plant on the hill of there being literally no mode 7 games that followed fzero and mario kart but people reflexively arguing that there was literally nothing special about them compared to conveyor belt scrollers basically proved his bait to be valid.
>>
>>12773598
I'm not that guy, maybe it's my fault for jumping in. I'm going against the implication that because certain games have an elevation gimmick it puts them on equal footing to games having unrestricted turning and (x,y) position. I wasn't trying to argue the jumping gimmick of mode seven was superior.
>>
>>12773602
the point was 360-degree movement existing in 16-bit games other than mk and f0, which is more than proven by now, and that's without even considering top-down racers that also have 360 degree turning
then mk and f0 were mogged by scroller racers having a better illusion of track elevation proving that the latter is also less flat
complete humiliation of op

yeah all of this is bullshit. pathetic coping. that's what I was pointing out. it distracts from the straightforward factual error op made.
>>
>>12773632
try not shifting the goalposts to framerate or jumping when proven wrong on your initial argument next time and people won't shift the goalposts back on you, op

I think mode seven was a notable innovation and it's dumb to try to reflexively pull it down, nothing was special, everything must return to the mean of games available on the megadrive etc. I find that tendency on /vr/ to often be more annoying than ragebait ops.

As for Mode 7 my wet dream is a first-person racing game, there is Super F-1 Hero but it's kinda slow and janky. Even more regular racers wirh first person like Super Chase Hq would be appreciated

Donkey Kong Jr becomes Rare Donkey Kong when he grows up in case you didnt know
>>
>>12777429
Yep. Also Stanley from DK3 becomes Diddy Kong after being transformed into a monkey by Kamek from Yoshi's Island.
>>
>>12777429
Not according to Nintendo. Their official canon is that Cranky Kong is the original Donkey Kong but DK is his grandson meaning Donkey Kong Jr (DKs dad) is just not in it.
