>>12763881Fuck yeah
I do not understand the purpose of such patches. If you were content playing the game with a machine translation, could you not have done so years ago using RetroArch's built in translator?
>>12764091Can't speak for others, but a patched rom is great for running on actual hardware. Sometimes patchers will do some quick editing of obvious translation issues to polish it up too; Japanese auto translations often fuck up pronouns, certain verbs (like give/take), interjections translated as words.
>>12764187>running on actual hardwareonly trannies play fan translations on consoles
>>12764091I had no idea retroarch has a built in translator. Also, LLMs have vastly improved the automated translation quality in the last year.

>>12763881>>12764071This can play out one of two ways:1) Aeon Genesis cucks out and cancels like they always do when someone successfully "takes" a project right under their nose (if it's really farther behind than they care to admit)2) Aeon Genesis publishes what they have in response and goes scorched-earth (if it's really further along and the rival is a reckless glory-seeking idiot who pretended it was finished)Scenario #2 is always more fun and I should think it's likelier after RHDN pissed a lot of people off including Ghideon Zhi, sadly it seems he's more bark than bite when you get down to it.
>>12764091In some cases that also means the bulk of the hacking work has been done, known and hopefully documented, making it that someone with actual language knowledge can just easily fix itI've seen okaaaayish MTL if they put the work into it and don't just put it through a translator and calls it a day, but at the end of the day, it's unfortunately still probably preferable than garbage like this >>12764071 as these fuckers legitimately needs to be kicked in the ass for this>Hurr durr here's our ongoing project page full of half-translations that we don't officially say it's dropped and shit picked from literally over 20 years ago. No it's not dropped, fuck you
It’’s literally all AI is good for, since AI is glorified search and auto correct. If it prevents a single troon from butchering a retro game, I’m all for it.
Honestly kind of hilarious how someone has been “working” on fan-translating this for two decades and then someone just machine translates it over a week or month
Well, maybe this will spur someone to do a real translation.
>>12764550No, it's Landstalker but woke and genderswapped.
>>12764678>I've seen okaaaayish MTL if they put the work into it and don't just put it through a translator and calls it a dayI actually put the work into using google translate and deepl and on screen text recognition tools and hunting down individual characters when they failed and even translating a few sentences one word at a time just to figure out what was being said. Took me quite some time, but I finally managed to release a machine translation of episode 287 of Game Center CX to the anons here. A few people said it was alright, but that's about it. And I've never heard anyone bring it up once since an 'real' translation was released, which was about 80%-95% the same.Meanwhile people who just dump shit into the machine and post the results get about the same amount of praise, and even people defending them for flaws because 'It's just a machine translation, what did you expect?' There's no real benefit to putting effort into a quality machine translation, just a lot more work for the person doing it.
>>12764850Yeah, this is the kinda stuff I've been talking aboutAnd yeah, it's unfortunate. I've done myself translations of translations (JP > French > English). Evidently, it's not ideal, but it should be more than good enough if there's nothing else betterSome people also avoided me like the plague
>>12764071Based, I fucking love AI.
>>12763881Wow, thanks to whoever did this. This is one of the few Japanese only games that I actually wanted to play and I never thought it would happen. This is awesome, I'm so excited.
>>12764550No, it's a lady who stalks on land.
Honestly, I'm sure machine translations nowadays are more than good enough to get through the game, and probably better than a lot of the official translations we got in the 16-bit era. Better than no translation, certainly.
>>12764071Get fucked you fucking losers. AI replacing all those dogshit translation projects.
All i want now is a proper translation of landstalker without the censorship because the western changes suck.
My only complaint is he doesn't say which translation tool he used, not all machines are made equally.
>>12764985>Better than no translation, certainly.Oh fuck off. No. It's not better than no translation. A bad translation still makes it look like the game is done. And any potential new translator won't want to touch it. So not only is it not better than nothing. It is worse than nothing.
>>12765104Isn't that the PAL version? Just get or make a NTSC patch for it.
>>12765191Yes, we should all be so grateful to hard working translators... it's only been 18 years! Just a little more time... be patient. Ignore the second most revolutionary technology in your lifetime that solves the problem, which was invented in less than the span of time he's been hard at work.
>>12765191Nah, you fuck off, leatherhead. If you're so worried about the nuances getting lost, translate it yourself or try to get someone to make a translation. I agree there's the downside risk of people marking it as done and not giving it a natural translation ever, but the simple fix for that is just to translate it. I'm happy there's a way of playing the game in English. The amount of text in the game is probably small enough that you could pay someone to translate it for cheat and then insert it yourself, now that the hacking work is done.
>>12765206*for cheap
>>12765203There is none at romhacking, also the euro version is censored too.
>>12763881good
>>12765206>translate it yourself or try to get someone to make a translationIt seriously is so much easier to update something like this now, for anyone who does want to try adding a human translation. For fun, I experimented with how AI can speed up this process. First, if anyone wants to compare the machine translation to the original text, I had it extract the text from the original and the text from the translation patch into a spreadsheet.I've also left a space for adding a human translation if you wish. Using the tools ChatGPT generated in this github, you can easily update the patched English rom, automatically inserting the new lines from that professional translator column into a new patched rom file (and automatically giving you a new patch). More instructions on the github if you want to play around with it.https://github.com/orcmasterjones-netizen/LadystalkerTranslationTools/tree/mainAI can do some amazing things these days. These tools it threw together seem to work, but obviously don't trust the results without testing carefully. But it does seem to be working.

I prefer ai translations over translations by people who clearly have an agenda and political opinions they want to shoehorn in. Its at least neutral. The fact that I dont even have to mention the political orientation and we all know what I mean is a clear sign that most people are aware of the problem.
>>12766139>you could even use a similar OCR tool that allows you to see the Japanese line and look up the words in a dictionaryThe Retroarch feature is awesome, but it still takes you out of the game. The sentences themselves seem perfectly sensical. You can compare it with the Japanese text shared in that github link. It's not perfect, but I think people are acting like the result is worse than it is in reality. Auto-translation has improved a ton, and can easily handle the relatively simple text in a game like this. You're going to see "It cannot be helped," but it will all be comprehensible.

>>12767541I'm impressed by your results and the Landstalker font looks great : the character and line spacing are so much better. On the other hand I find this pretty scary, did you just ask for the Landstalker font and bam, it changed the glyphs and character spacing table automaticaly?
>>12767561>On the other hand I find this pretty scary, did you just ask for the Landstalker font and bam, it changed the glyphs and character spacing table automaticaly?Honestly, more or less yeah. I handed the AI a Landstalker rom and told it to have a go at it. Or, the AI's explanation expanding on that:>It discovered that both games use compatible 16×15 one-bit glyphs, located Landstalker’s original font data, converted the byte order, and mapped the characters into Lady Stalker. It then found that Lady Stalker’s word spacing was too wide for the new font and adjusted that one spacing value after measuring every line in the released script.>So it wasn’t quite a blind one-click replacement—it did a fair bit of reverse-engineering and verification—but from my end it really was basically “here are the ROMs; see what you can do.”
>>12767565Pretty incredible it managed to pull it all off so quickly.
>>12767565ntafascinating, did it tell you if it accessed the landstalker dissasembly github?
>>12767570It did.>Yes—it did. During the investigation I accessed lordmir’s Landstalker disassembly, along with liblandstalker, as corroborating references.>Specifically, I located the font bank in the US ROM at 0x02A884 and confirmed that its bytes exactly matched the disassembly’s assets_packed/graphics/fonts/mainfont.1bpp. The actual patch builder extracts the font from the user-supplied Landstalker ROM and verifies both ROM hashes; it doesn’t require or redistribute that repository’s asset.>So the honest short answer is: yes, the disassembly GitHub helped—combined with direct ROM analysis and byte-for-byte verification.

Part of the reason I tried throwing together tools for playing with the patch was to show people how easy it is now for other people to update/fix this into something better if they choose to.I do understand the concern though, there's a risk that people will feel less incentive to release their own translation patch of the game now. Another reason I'm playing around with it is to help avoid having an incomplete release be the main existing option in the case nobody ever chooses to fix it up. So I figured I could try polishing some things like the font up myself and save people some time editing it. I know the romhacking.net page says he plans to update it, but who knows if or when. It's also partially just a fun test of AI for me. I would be happier seeing Aeon Genesis release the one he's been working on too, or someone else releasing a polished fan translation. Also, I don't mean to be hard on RetroArch's OCR translator, I think it's a great option to have. I played through Slayers on PC-98 with a similar feature years ago, which was nice before the fan translation for that came out.
>>12769038>>12768714This guy seems more like a chef than a cook (there's usually a professional difference, chefs are higher up than cooks, but「コック」tends to be used more casually/interchangeably in Japanese) but I haven't played the game so I'm just going off the vibe of the character's design. It all depends on what kind of translation style you're going for:>"Cocks" if you're a literalist, but no native English speaker is going to think of "cook" as the root word like a Japanese person>"Cox" and "Cooks" are both corrections of the above, the former resembling a real name and the latter preserving the intended pun; the former reads like something a machine would default to unless you give it some more contextMy preference to tick the boxes optimally, if I'm right about a chef fitting the context more than a cook, is "Chev" - a real nickname that serves as an obvious pun of the (probably) intended word and keeps the spirit well enough for a playable version. The only downside is that you MIGHT get know-it-all purists complaining about going a bridge too far...
>>12769205Chev is a cool idea and sounds nice, though you're right it would probably bug purists.

>>12765191Damn I guess. I stumbled through the Japanese version because I like the artwork and music, at least I'll be able to get past the first town and have fun walking around. I wonder if people could just pay a professional translator, they exist for business purposes.
I've always preferred a good localization. Japanese isn't a language you can directly translate to english, you have to approximate the intention behind the words not just the bare meaning. These machine translations are way better than they used to be, but they still can't match a real translation.Take Ace Attorney for example, setting aside the few very dated meme references in the script, they had to painstakingly figure out how to convey all the puns and make them make sense through an American lens. And they did an incredible job of it, the series wouldn't have gotten anywhere if it simply went for a word for word translation.I guess for games that don't have very clever or cultural writing, or any word play, machine is probably fine. But seeing people use it for stuff like VN's or serious RPGs just hurts my soul.

>>12769872Thanks for giving an explanation. I see where you're coming from now.>My condolences to whoever is cleaning up after the MTL but you're better off vibecoding the entire thing off the jp version and redoing the translation part rather than deal with the mystery soup of bugs this has.Yeah, I considered that same thing halfway through. I still might end up doing that, but this seems to be working out better than expected. Most of the bugs seem to be in the menus and battle messages, and I can probably fix those. The translation part itself might have to be totally redone at some point, I'm not going to pretend I know how good it is (I've got like 2 years of high school Japanese and anime knowledge aka nothing). To my eyes, your "1998-era quality" sounds about right, it reminds me of old translations that were functional enough to get you through the game but ripped out important nuances. But if things like fitting items into the menu and getting the battle messages debugged works out, maybe it will help someone insert a better translation later. Obviously I'll have to test it all a ton after.>Stop rewarding low effort trash that expects jannies to clean up after it.You're probably right about that, but at this point I've come far enough that I'll try to finish cleaning this one up. The irony of all this vibe coding is that ROM hacking is not very difficult. I understand using machine translation. Learning Japanese takes thousands of hours of studying over many years. I don't agree with it, but I get it. The same cannot be said of making ROM hacks. Unlike learning Japanese, you can become proficient ROM hacking in less than a month, maybe a little longer if you aren't already acquainted with programming. Doing things "the right way" is not an insurmountable hurdle.
>>12766102W-washi does mean eagle! :'(
>>12770082>The same cannot be said of making ROM hacks. Unlike learning Japanese, you can become proficient ROM hacking in less than a month, maybe a little longer if you aren't already acquainted with programming. Doing things "the right way" is not an insurmountable hurdle. It's still more time consuming, even if not insurmountable. What took weeks or months can potentially be done in a day or hour now.And how challenging it is depends on what specifically you're trying to accomplish. There's been plenty of projects delayed because of technical issues, that wouldn't happen at all if it were always totally trivial work. You might get stuck figuring things out, in which case AI can help you see what you're missing. An example:https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonROMhacks/comments/1v5wj68/ai_and_romhacks_a_developers_nuanced_letter_to/>I have been a software engineer for 11 years, I've seen the transition from the old to the new world. My company has moved from an "use as much AI as you can" mindset to a "you better be frugal with AI" one because Anthropic decided to move to usage rather than subscription pricing.>I use AI everyday at work and didn't want to use it in my hobbies. Then my hack developed a game ruining bug where catching certain polemon would crash the game. I tried for months to fix it, I could stop some crashes but not all, and I'm literally a professional and experienced developer. I turned to pret discord but the issue was specific to unique features of my hack so no help there. Finally I used Codex and in three prompts it found the root cause and fixed it. The root cause was buried in a memory address conflict between data that normally never interact but do in this one particular flow. I would never have found that. It wasn't a matter of saving time, it done something I couldn't.It's better time if you understand things yourself too, but I can't understand the mindset of totally refusing a tool that can massively speed up your work.
>>12770082Maybe we're just different-brained people, but man, I feel the opposite.
>>12769949>Are you going to over the JP text or the vibetranslated one?I think a new translation would ideally work from the original Japanese text. Personally, I'm more interested in seeing if I can fix up stuff in the patch like fonts, menus, item names, and messages until it looks clean. If all of that works well, replacing the MTL text with a proper human translation shouldn't be too hard. I can't be much help with the actual translation part.>Should we do more threads about this in case you want to keep going? You don't have to, but feel free to make new Lady Stalker threads whenever you want to talk about the game . I check /vr/ fairly often so I could post updates in those. I could also make an update thread myself after this one dies, assuming I have something worth sharing.
>>12769956be the change you want to see and hack and translate yourself.
>>12770102>What took weeks or months can potentially be done in a day or hour now. From what I've seen, vibe coded hacks do the bare minimum to be considered functional. It's not fair to compare them to fully fleshed out, thoroughly polished ROM hacks. A more fair comparison would be to compare them to text extraction and insertion proof of concept demos, and those only take about a day. (Usually, anyway. Some games are more complex. But I've yet to see a "complex" game be vibe coded through so that's irrelevant for now). This post about Splatterworld was made less than seven hours after the ROM was released. Within two days, they got the hacking for the game to about an equal state to where the Lady Stalker hack is now, with a build process that takes text from a spreadsheet and inserts it into the game. The hacking didn't stop there, though. They went on to spend the next month rearranging and rewriting the code for every menu in the game to overcome item name character limits. They didn't just make a menu window wider (though most vibe coded hacks can't even manage that), they completely overhauled every menu that displays item names.ROM hacking is the quintessential example of "the last 10% takes 90% of the work." And that's where the trouble with vibe coding lies. It doesn't make code bases that are scalable and enable the complex overhauls needed for that last 10%. That's by design. AI companies don't want you to take output from their products and be able to expand upon it freely. They want you to be stuck with an inextricable mess of code so that you have to keep paying the AI company to be able to maintain it. AI generated code isn't designed for scalability. It's designed to lure you in with quick results and keep you trapped asking the AI for help every time a problem crops up.That isn't to mention the average vibe coder doesn't care about quality enough to even attempt that last 10%.
>>12770243Well it might be that the ideal use of AI coding is to help people with polishing up that last 10% and finding bugs, rather than using it to do the entire first 90% for you.
>>12767583Landstalker sucks, this game must be total shit then

>>12770165nah seeing both sides bitch about new translations is way more fun
>>12770257>t. got lost in Greenmaze.
>>12770259Yeah, that's fair. In this case, the patch posted on romhacking.net is clearly pretty rushed out the door too. For example, it removes the voice blip sounds while talking to NPCs. Like in Landstalker, that's an important part of the game's soul, so it has to be included. Even as an early version release of a hack, it would've been nice to make note of that at least. I've been messing with it more. The voice blips are back in and the scrolling text during battles is working now. Going to try to get more of them menus looking prettier, then I can share an updated patch for whoever wants it.
>>12770103What game and platform, if any, did you try to learn hacking with? Even if you aren't super into them, I think it's a good idea to do your first hack on a primitive and well documented platform like the NES or Game Boy. Doing a project for one of those teaches you how to do this type of thing without getting lost in the weeds of the more complicated architecture of later systems.
>>12770461>superThat one. My translation was the easy part but the "last 10%" issues (implementation and presentation) stalled stuff for a while.

>>12770584To thisThings are getting closer
>>12770586This some variable width font wizardry or what?
>>12770640That's exactly what it is. Variable width font is working for for the inventory in and out of battles, and in shops now.The battle messages and everything else I've tested seem to work fine now. Took me forever to test the critical hit message because it wasn't triggering, but eventually I saw it. Some of the battle messages are a little too long at the moment, but no other issues there. The last thing I wanted to do was just polish up some of the text in the menus (like the messed up looking "attack" in this screenshot) and then I can share what I've got. There might be stuff I missed since I haven't tested an entire playthrough, I've only played until the second town so far. But after that's done I'll share the patch in this thread. It won't change the translation, but the game should feel better to play than the initial state of the patch. Good enough to get through the game, and then hopefully someone can give it a proper human translation eventually.
>>12769956>Why can't we have translators that released projects in a timely manner like 20 years ago? What's hilarious is that the ones from 20 years ago aren't any better either
>>12770082>>12770102Plus, out of those "technical issues", you apparently have very few people with very specific expertise. Why did they translate the PS1 version of Linda3, according to older threads, it's because there's less people with the knowhow to do the Saturn version, which is a shitshow to work with, while PS1 is easier and there's more people around with the ability to work on that and overall more documentation. And apparently there's like a single guy that can do... what was it? Subs for TG-16 cutscenes? And he's picky on what he works on apparently

Alright, taking a break for a bit. I think this updated patch is good enough for anybody who wants to test out the game now. The only thing I've noticed that I've got to clean up still is the item storage menus are getting a little messed up. The actual storage and retrieval still works fine though.https://github.com/orcmasterjones-netizen/LadystalkerTranslationToolsThe tools in there can be ignored for now, just download the patch uploaded today (there's one that can be applied directly to the Japanese rom, and one that can be applied to a rom already patched with the MTL patch on romhacking.net).I'll update it with the storage fixed later sometime, but I'm going to be out and don't want to let the thread die without sharing where I got with all this. I tested the game up until after the sewers, and everything worked fine that far. Can't do anything about the translation, but it's at least enough that you'll know how to get past the puzzles and where to go. I think it feels way better to play now, no glitchy battle messages or menus besides the storage, voice blips are back, items fit in the menus (a few might be cut off awkwardly, but nothing major). Give it a shot if you want, and if you notice anything let me know. I didn't play far enough to get magic or the other party members, so the menus related to that might be messy still. It's worth trying the first hour or so of the game though, it's actually pretty fun. Definitely deserves a proper translation eventually.

Hoping and praying for moonlight syndrome translation, I don't even care if it's AI or whatever at this point
Okay, I think this one is pretty good now. The only issues I've noticed testing the first part of the game are that some menus like the Storage leave some visual noise (black lines flash for a moment) when opening them. The old problems should be fixed. Big warning though that it's only been tested in the early portions of the game. There might be some small things left untranslated, I notice when getting a game over that the dead party member symbol is still a Japanese character. LadyStalker_English_Patch_for_Japanese_ROM.ips is the lastest patch you want, or just get the Lady Stalker - English.sfc file uploaded today.https://github.com/orcmasterjones-netizen/LadystalkerTranslationTools
>>12773145If you don't care if it's MTL, you can play it right now with the "AI Service" feature of RetroArch. There is zero reason to wait for someone to vibe code a patch for you.
>>12773727aeon genesis preview with that same line
Yeah, right now it's still>Dead = 死 >Poison = 毒 >Paralysis = 痺 >Sleep = 眠 >Tiny = 小
>>12773790An easy quick fix would be replacing them with letters, like how >>12769059 replaced the equip character with "E".You'd have to deal with Poison and Paralysis sharing "P" though, maybe using "R" for Paralysis?
>>12773795R = restricted lol, good enough
>>12773795What about>D(ead)/K(O) = 死 >T(oxic) or P(oison) = 毒 >P(aralysis) or S(tun) = 痺 >S(leep) or N(ap) = 眠 >M(ini) or L(ittle) = 小Just spitballing a few alternatives here.
>>12773795V[enom] could also work in context if the only enemies that poison you are beast/animal-like.
>>12773824>>12773837Good suggestionsFor now, went withD = DeadP = PoisonR = ParalysisS = SleepT = TinyNew version with that change added to the github.
Here's an example of how a MTL might trip you up though - there's a part of the game where you need to read a story from fragments in the library. You pass the puzzle by selecting the 8 books containing pieces of the story in order. Here are the fragments in this translation:1. "Bebikichi was very hasty, so..."2. "So everyone, please be careful too."3. "And was often badly hurt."4. "There was a Baby Baron named Bebikichi..."5. "He mistook people for rocks..."6. "Once upon a time, in a certain place..."7. "Inside a cave..."8. "There was a Baby Baron..."And here is the solution:6 - Once upon a time, in a certain place...4 - There was a Baby Baron named Bebikichi...8 - There was a Baby Baron...1 - Bebikichi was very hasty, so...7 - Inside a cave...5 - He mistook people for rocks...3 - And was often badly hurt.2 - So everyone, please be careful too.As you can see, it's confusing. Especially the order for books 4 and 8.
Is this game even any good? Graphically it somehow looks worse than LandStalker.
Noticed a small graphical error with the latest version on github. When using items your health bar can glitch up a bit. It goes away after though. Other than some ugliness like that when using items and opening some menus, it's all working so far.>>12774142It's decent. I don't think it's as good as Landstalker, but I'm enjoying what I've played. It's more RPG-like than Landstalker. Like you get into random battles with enemies and get a party of three characters with spells and everything. You can't jump, but you can dash. Lots of small (easy so far) puzzles. The isometric action RPG combat is a little awkward and the enemies feel kinda dumb, but it works okay. The npcs and the story are pretty charming too, even with the MTL talking to people has been fun (especially with the npc voice noises added back). It's amusing to me how the island you visit for treasure is treated as a tourist attraction, with a tour of the dungeon and getting your photo taken. It's something that would benefit from a strong translation, so I hope the Aeon Genesis version does come out someday. Overall, I'd say it's worth trying out if you're a Landstalker/Dark Savior fan. Not a top tier SNES game or anything, but solid.

King Nole must have killed this guy's dog and stole his lithograph or something.
>>12774248Is mostly because without the remix patch is terrible to control due to being a old ass tank controls attempt. With it, is wonderful.

>>12763881i remember seeing this game. it's on the snes
>>12777005It's like a silent universally understood agreement. These things obviously takes time and people are interested in the end result, so you blog about your progress and yadda yadda and you don't feel like you're doing this for nothing. This also indicate to other translators/hackers that you're doing it so they don't one up, wasting your time, or don't waste their time attempting it either, so they could, hopefully, translate something elseThe issue obviously comes when fuckers don't deliver, and never indicates that a project is dropped despite it being going on for almost 20 fucking years. You could say that's definitively a breach of the "silent agreement"
>>12777005These projects take a lot of man hours. It's less about making people mad and more about not being the dork who spends 500 hours working on a game only to have the person who announced their project earlier finish and leave your work redundant. There's an endless supply of untranslated games, so no one is going to pick one someone else is working on.Ideally, people open source their projects from the start so that if they become abandoned, someone else can pickup from where they left off rather than start over from the beginning. That's what happened with the Xenon PC-98 patch. It started development in 2013, changed hands 5 times, and was released earlier this year. Though with the recent deluge of rush job MTL patches, I expect we're going to be seeing a lot less of that in the future. No one wants their work appropriated by AI bros who care more about attention than quality.
>>12777049>>12777451Sitting on translations should only be respected if it's actively worked on. Meaning ONE of them, or maybe 2-3 at most. Idiots hogging a dozen should just be ignored.Besides, some people see it as a hobby, and there are tons of time-wasting translations, e.g. all the non-english ones.

>if you dont play the game the way I want you to its bad!
>>12777553Put yourself in the shoes of a hacker or translator. Suppose you just finished a big project and are now deciding what to work on next. You have a big list of untranslated games you love and consider candidates for your next project. Let's say there's 15 games on it. One of them is listed on Aeon Genesis' website as "in progress." The other 14 aren't. You aren't going to pick the one on his website, no matter long ago the last update was. You're going to pick one of the other 14. I'm not saying how things ought to be. I'm saying how they are.
