Any alternative controllers (preferably cheap) for n64 emulation?
the 8bitdo one is $40.hyperkin duke works well for n64, but costs like $30 more and isn't wireless.
>>12764492I want something that captures the essence of the N64Playing with a dualshock 3 feels weirdI can get some Xbox one/360 controllers and wondering if that's more Nintendo esque than a ds3
>>12764492>Hyperkin dukeWhy is that shit so expensive and who tf wants it
>>12764504I use DS4 or Xbawx series whatever. It never feels right, but it's "good enough."For some games you can set the C buttons as the right stick, but not for others. Then the Z trigger gets confusing, especially in games that already require L and R a lot, you get used to it in seconds, but it never feels right.

>>12764504>I want something that captures the essence of the N64maybe you should get the original fucking controller then

>>12764697>8bitdo are tranny controllersWhat is meant by this? I own several 8bitdo controllers. I do not believe I am a transexual, but if you could explain, this would be appreciated. All my 8bitdo controllers continue to function after years of usage.

I will never.Stop.Reddit spacing.

>>12764840>no u
>>12764776Most OEM controllers available have seen heavy use. JP controllers less so, but cost a premium and can be just as used as any other OEM pad. As for USB adapters, RetroUSB doesn't manufacture their N64 USB adapter anymore and everything else is a cheap knockoff. Expect driver fuckery with any Chinese adapter.
>>12764483I use a gamecube controller and an adapter. Works pretty well for most games. Some games like Goldeneye don't really feel right though. Nothing really compares to the original controller with the z trigger under the stick and the c-buttons and stuff.

>>12764483I like the Hori controllers, but they are small. However, for an alternative that might be the right size for average hands, these new ones can be unboxed for comparison if you want.

>>12766191It's mk64 for me
>>12765137This thing is based, you almost get multiple controllers for the price of 1. I wonder how it would do when emulating 6-button-pad Sega games.
>>12766181Just played through S&P on mineThe controller is really good
>>12765017You're exaggerating a bit. Regardless, you want the controller to have a bit of use so that the stick is worn in comfortablly but not to where it's loose.
>>12765017Also Hyperkin still makes a great adapter, forgot to include that.
>>12767190So now this is an adapter fight? I'll throw in blueretro into the fold. It is the best and the cheapest. It is open source hardware/software or turn key Chinese made hardware options. You can DIY if you want. I don't think there are any consoles not supported by the project.
The GOAT. As long as it's an official one, not a knock off.
>using my custom bluetooth modded N64 controller, with brass gears and my limited project renaissance steel bowl and stick for F-Zero X Sucks to be you :)
>>12767307You're the only one fighting apparently. I'm just replying to anon, letting him know that he doesn't have to settle for a cheap Chinese one. All the adapters are pretty cheap. Hyperkin is just the one I have the best experience with.
>>12767415I can get two of these so wondering if better than a N64 Chinese knock-off
>>12764548I bought this for N64 games and I DO NOT recommend. The analog stick is basically locked in 8 directions for fighting games. It's unusable, you might as well buy the dpad only pad they made.
>>12764548I bought this for N64 games and I recommend it. The analog stick is basically fine. It's usable, unless you're severely autistic and you can't stop yourself from pivoting into a point.
>>12768268really? what a letdown.it looks like a perfect fit since it has an octagonal gate even.
>>12764548>R1 and R2 aren't parallel with the other buttons
>>12764504What I would like to see is a standard 2 grip controller, but six face buttons on the right and the right analog shrunk to something PSP sized. Maybe even IBM trackpoint style for the second analog stick. Usable but taking a back seat to the face buttons.
>>12768298here's your controller, bro.turtle beach victrix pro bfg.that'll be $180+shipping.
>>12768275Nah, he's wrong don't worry about it.
>>12768361you're trollin him to buy a fighting game controller unsuitable for Banjo Kazooie
>>12764483 (OP)I too went down this rabbit hole OPIf you're not going for a 3 prong design you might as well just use whatever controller you have now.Its hard to find a good sution for 3 prong though. You can go original and pay out the ass for a replacement metal stick and low latency usb adapter. Or you can pay out the ass and get the NSO one on ebay but the still will sudoku like the original, and it has nearly an entire frame of lag no matter how you connect it.I settled for the 2.4ghz one. Its under "saffun" and a bunch of other chinkoid names. The stick range is nearly spot on with the original and its a proper long stick vs the typial squat shaped analogs on modern controllers.Connects to everything and the lag tests online put it alongside most other 2.4ghz controllers, aka very good. The single issue I have with it is that theres no octagonal gate, so its a 360 smooth rotation along the edges. It LOOKS like theres a gate but the part that touches the stick is smooth. The good news is that the shroud along the stick can be replaced. The bad news is that im too retarded to into 3d printing/sourcing one with a proper gate
>>12768801>saffunIt has a terrible deadzone also it's dogshit interally, mine broke after i popped the potentiometers from the stickbox to troubleshoot stuff., the solder joins broke and ripped the solder pads in the board with it, shit build quality.Literlaly been fixing/modding GC controllers for 10 years and never had this happen with any of them.I recommend pic related to OP, this shit slaps and works great on switch and on PC.I put this bitch on a japanese red watermelon shell and this bitch sexy as fuck.
>>12768820Pic related, i almost feel bad for using this shell since it's in such good condition too, but oh well, i love this thing.Hits 80 on all axis on real hardware and you can even play perfect dark with it if you use a control freek to increase the height of the stick.
>>12768268Are you sure the fighting game isn’t 8 direction lock?
>>12768931It's the controller, you can test it in any joypad test program. The analog is greatly diminished and biased towards 8 directions, you basically can't make the inbetween movements smoothly. This sucks for N64 3D platformers.
>>12768747>>12768274>It's usable, unless you're severely autistic and you can't stop yourself from pivoting into a point. You're not so autistic that you HAVE to rest into each extremes, are you Anon? I'm sure you have enough agency to rest your thumb on an inbetween line, right?
>>12768825>>12768820Doesn't feel right without a tall ass stick, you might as well just use a normal controller.
>>12768820Was reading what another technician said, one who specializes in 64 repair and they just said flat out kitch bent is only good for replacing one component the ranges are dogshit especially north-east and the other diagonals (which I can attest to) and you're better off just getting the 8bitdo stick.Huge shame the 64 scene is such a mess.
>>12769424Kitch bent is shit and inconsistent. If thats the case, get yourself a rocker gaming steel bowl instead and a steel stick.

>>12769953we were taalking about the hori and i just posted that for you to chuckle at..
>>127688208shitdo stick has a wrong range curve. it's better to refurb an OEM stick.dunno about the saffun tho.
>>12770367You mean the tick is too thick for the gating?yeah im aware, it's physical sadly, but for 98% of games it works flawlessly, and by using a kontrol freek it becomes decent for goldeneye too.
>>12770393no. i mean games that need precise stick movements like aiming on 007, turok and banjo tooie work as well as using an xbox controller, AKA, it's very hard to aim.the n64 controller has more sensitivity to fine movements at the start of the stick travel than at the end of it while modern controllers (ps1 dualshock and after, really) are more or less equally sensible from start to finish.>>12770393>and by using a kontrol freek it becomes decent for goldeneye toothat's a way to fix the issue. i use gamepad phoenix.but was trying to give OP a plug and play solution since not everyone wants to fiddle around using specific software that may or may not work in all OS's.
>>12768268>I bought this for N64 games and I DO NOT recommend. The analog stick is basically locked in 8 directions for fighting games. >>12768308>Ai sloop
>>12767579Hyperkin isn't cheap Chinese... Oh yeah, it is overpriced cheap Chinese.
I bought a raphnet adapter and i can't set it up with retroarch, pls help
>>12764483There is no alternative to the original N64 controller.> N64 games are designed to be played on the N64 with its controller. Playing these games with a different controller won't offer any advantages. Mario 64 won't be any easier with a different controller.Anyone who bought an 8BitDo or Hori controller got ripped off.
>>12770574The biggest issue with these modern alternatives is using gamecube/xbox style analog caps and stickboxes. They need to :>in the firmwaremake it so reaching the end of the physical gate it gives you a value of 85 on the axis and have proper diagonals>physicallyUse a very smooth/low resistance sticbox, for the gating use something similar to the original, and make the actual stick cap THIN, like the original, so in order to reach the edge of the gate it needs a good amount of travel, this in conjunction with a proper firmware should make sensitivities far more 1:1 with the original.
>>12770698that's a good start.but they also need to adjust the firmware to have what is called a square root curve for sensitivity.one of my n64 controllers has a repairbox gc-style stick installed and it works fine for most games, but the sensitivity curve make it unusable for game where you need to aim.i also have >>12765137 and it's great, close to an OEM stick in terms of sensitivity. it has slightly more range, which is ok.
>>12770730>repairbox gc style stickPretty sure those are fucking trash.the 8bitdo module is at least usable, the deadzone is non existent and you can actually do OK with it in GE, its damn good for jet force gemini and all the other games. One of my old controller has one of those old GC style sticks and my god its unusable, even for zelda.
Do any other non n64/wii/wii u consoles pretty much require their controller for optimal play? Some of the analog button ps2/ps3 games maybe?
>>12770602Guys a troll
>>12769840Just use this one.
Since you are saying cheap, get OEM controllers with blown out sticks and get this kit https://store.kitsch-bent.com/collections/featured/products/n64-joystick-repair-kitIf you take the time to remove the flashing on the stick kit they work really really well, very OEM like. https://a.co/d/0gTU2BUCThese are what I use for Mario Party with my kids. They are BRUTAL on controllers and I don't even like them using OEMs with the stick kit. Also, 3 kids plus me on corded controllers is just asking to have your n64 pulled down to the floor. I REALLY like the mod retro controller, it is my favorite N64 controller for when I'm just playing. That's like 100 bucks though
>>12771237Id like to also add that I don't like any of the modernized N64 controllers like the 8bitdo and Retro Brawler, they both work fine I just think without the trident shape you are missing out. Also, retro brawler stuff is kinda trash. I've broken so many of them even compared to the shitty Chinese Bluetooth trident controllers off eBay.
>>12764483Nope. You need an OEM n64 controller in good condition to play n64 games. Cut and dry. That is it.
>>12771030>dehumanizing a person just because you disagree with themYou're not a good person, Anon.
>>12771278>brawler64Has always been a piece of shit, don't know why so many idiots swear by it.
>>12771880I don't think they use it outside of running around in Mario for a few minutes. Like, half the people that are into retro games don't ever play them.
