How did you feel about Portal? Both as a game and the viral sensation in 2007 because of cake memes.
>>
Great game, cute ending song. As always, normalfags manage to turn anything even slightly amusing into cringe by repeating the same meme over and over and over. That has no influence on the quality of the game itself though, just ignore that shit.

Not retro

>But the rules sa-

Don't care still not retro and never will
>>
>>12764919
incredibly novel puzzle game back from when valve were still competent game developers. i was going to say that despite how much i liked the game i don't have any real desire to replay it but now that i'm thinking about it i think i might want to seeing as how it's been almost 20 fucking years...

It was relentlessly spammed on /v/ too back in the day newfag

Neat gimmick but the game was Reddit incarnate. I can't think of a single game more reddit than Portal.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Super Mario 64
Super Metroid
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Final Fantasy VII
Doom
Metal Gear Solid

Fully agree that your list is reddit but those games lack the reddit humor and quips that made Portal such a reddit icon.

Portal 2, it dialed up le quirky humour

It's funny that you made this thread, OP. I was playing Portal 1 again just a few days ago. Good game. The puzzles are just challenging enough to make you think and use your brain, but not so challenging that you get bored and quit. It aged really well.

>>12764947
>Not retro
True. It doesn't "feel" retro. At least not quite yet.
>never will
Not true. The game is 19 years old. Give it a few more years and it will be unequivocally a retro game.
>>
>>12764919
I thought the gameplay was neat but I don't think I cared that much about anything else with the game. I got Portal 2 for free at some point I guess since it's on my Steam account and I know I didn't buy it but it doesn't seem like I ever played it.
>>
>>12765147
Cutoff is December 2007 with games running on Windows XP. Fits all criteria
>>
>>12765115
Yeah I know that. That's why calling out other "groups" for driving memes into the ground when this site has done it better than any of them is retarded and shows how little self-awareness they have
>>
>>12764919
I think it's like Tetris in that it's a good game, but people treat it like a masterpiece because it's a fun, accessible, generally easy puzzle game.
I don't think it's a masterpiece, or even anything particularly special if you consider it outside of the context of how special the technology was, but I do think it's a good, short puzzle game.
>>
>>12765158
>Not true. The game is 19 years old. Give it a few more years and it will be unequivocally a retro game

It's not about date it's about game design philosophy

7th gen games are fundamentaly the same as today, the same structure and awfull practice (online connectivity,DLC,Casual gaming, achievement, boring open world...)

Retro game design is born out of limitation which were still present during 6G but almost completely disappear with the PS3 and 360 ,way too powerfull to really alter the game design
>>
>>12764984
Team Fortress 2 is also quite reddit
>>
>>12765228
you don't think will ever be another major advancement in videogames? like even centuries in the future will still being playing re4 remakes and ads fps?
>>
>>12765214
>because it's a fun, accessible, generally easy puzzle game.
they don't do that though, without it leveraging technology in an impressive way to realize a unique gameplay concept no one would care.

brilliant deduction sherlock

No, Portal 2 was. The first still played it mostly straight with that ominous HL2-like atmosphere
>>

>>12765562
gameplay/puzzles in 2 were better but the story was tarded. not like 1 was any better but they just had no idea what to do with it other than "heyyyyy so here's another crazy robot that wants to kill you!"
>>
>>12765241
Not him, but I mostly agree with him. Centuries is a far cry from the "few more years" you were talking about. I actually think modern game design trends will eventually change at some point in our lifetime, but that doesn't mean games considered modern now will suddenly fit side by side with what we call retro now. They're a distinct category of games, and always will be, not because of some arbitrary time frame, which, at least at one point, happened to be a convenient way to distinguish them from other games, but because they're developed under a fundamentally different game design paradigm. The reason so many people here like retro games is because of all the ways they're different from modern games. Changing what's considered retro isn't going to get this board to suddenly like a whole category of games they currently hate. I think making it a dichotomy between retro and modern is the problem, not only because it's more about the games themselves than how long ago they came out, but also because it forces games into one of two categories even when neither might be appropriate. This is why some people suggest something like /v2k/ for 6th and 7th generation games.

TF2's writing and worldbuilding was actually pretty cool and interesting when it first launched. It wasn't until the comics came out when the game devolved into reddit personified.
>>
>>12765562
>>12765567
I don't remember much about the puzzles in 2, sure there were more elements to consider but I'm not sure if it was really better. The writing was too much for me, they really "jumped the shark" with that one. The first one was and still is really clever in a non-obnoxious way, the epitome of less is more.
>>
>>12768687
the puzzles in 2 were just spot the white colored areas
>>
>>12768687
The puzzles in 2 are notorious for being too easy. The only truly difficult chambers are like the last 2-3 levels then you fight the final boss. The co-op is where the actual good puzzles are.

My brother is a scuba diver. Apparently there was a super popular movie about scuba diving starting that hussy from the dark angel TV show, and normalfags ate it up. Some kid drowned or some shit, and they had to put way stricter rules to stop those retards from killing themselves. Eventually the normalfags got bored moved on to some other trend.
I wish video games was the sea.

the original version of Portal (released in 2007) can run on Windows XP. Windows XP was released in 2001, its retro you dumb faggot.

I will now stop liking any game that is popular, especially if it's a Nintendo game
>>
>>12772450
Is it just me, or were people on the Internet more annoyed about memes being overused? I remember around 15 years ago people were genuinely pissed off about memes like "Cake is a lie", "Arrow to the knee", etc, while these days the entire Internet is just constant 67 meme spam nonsense and no one really cares anymore.
>>
>>12764984
The outer worlds
>>
>>12773064
Absolutely, and part of it is probably all the people on the internet, and how often new memes pop up. Some memes don't get a chance to be overused before they get replaced by something else. But they also used to travel from site to site in mostly the same way. I think the common pattern was that a meme would start on 4chan, then go to Reddit, then Tumblr, then Twitter, then Facebook. Something like that. So by the time a meme was on Tumblr, it was worn out and unfunny on 4chan. And since online communities were more insular back then, most people on a given site saw and repeated the meme at the same time, and so it became overused for everyone there at the same time. It stood out a lot more if someone posted forever alone when the hip new meme was ironically liking MLG and "dank weed". You could tell they were an outsider. Nowadays, anons crosspost on Reddit and nearly every "funny" image is a Twitter screencap. Every site now has a mix of people who find a given meme hilarious and people who find the same meme to be done to death. As for why a meme's overuse is virtually never pointed out ever, I don't know. I feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone when my friends don't know what I'm talking about, or how it seems their humor has regressed and they talk like they're on Tumblr or Reddit and make jokes they would've found unfunny to the point of cringeworthiness over ten fucking years ago, but whatever.
>>
>>12773076
>As for why a meme's overuse is virtually never pointed out ever, I don't know.
I think it's mainly because a lot of people have grown up with the Internet now, so constantly speaking in memes is all they know.
>>
>>12773064
there were fewer people online back then compared to the billions online now, so memes have greater longevity and can be passed around different groups that can perpetuate them for far longer than their once natural lifespan.
Conversely you have memes that are incredibly popular, but then die out in the span of a few days to be replaced by the (((next thing))) that's popular.
Anecdotally I recall 'arrow in the knee' being popular for like 1-2 years overall, whereas these days it'd only be popular for 1-2 weeks at most.
There is a large degree of atomisaiton that exists as well on the modern internet, so whilst some memes will become very popular very quickly, some will die out in a blip, or never become popular at all whereas once they'd've existed for months or even years.
Ramblings aside, it's interesting to think about. Why did Advice Animals remain popular for 5 or so years, when Skibidi died in 2, for example?
>>
>>12765182
Steam doesn't run on Windows XP, so it doesn't count.
>>
>>12764919
Portal is not, and never will be, retro.
>>
>>12773108
>Why did Advice Animals remain popular for 5 or so years, when Skibidi died in 2, for example?
wondering what you're basing this on. as an outsider unc i can tell skibidi toilet is past its peak but still immensely popular; it's in fortnite which in these times is probably the best proof that you've "made it". who is using advice animals aside from a handful of zoomers using it ironically and trying to emulate milliennials?
>>
>>12764919
It’s a novel game, and the sequel is amazing with a friend. The memes are terrible, and it has the Seinfeld effect where 10+ years of millennial writing has completely annihilated whatever charm it once had
>>
>>12764919
good game, don't care about viral sensation
>>
>>12764919
I didn't care about the memes back in the day because I didn't play it on release. I pirated Portal on a whim in 2015 and enjoyed the physics and puzzles.
Short, fun game. I should replay it someday.
>>
>>12764919
Not /vr/.
>b-but the PC cutoff is 2007!
Don't care. The PC cutoff should be 2004 if anything. This is a 7th gen game that a lot of people played on X360 and PS3.
>>
>>12773268
It used to back when Portal came out, but that still doesn't make it retro.

>>12764947
