While I don't think there are many worthwhile documentaries on retro games, do you guys have any favorite behind the scenes clips/interviews/making of features that are worth sharing?I remember a VHS showing a behind the scenes look at Donkey Kong 64/Majora's Mask that was pretty decent for its short running time. I like the World of Warcraft BTS videos (if that counts as retro..). There was a really cool look at the team that made Doom on YouTube, I'm sure it's still around. Not sure what year, had to be ~90s

>>12768796>actually good Did you Know Gaming videoDoesn't exist
>>12766789The "The Untold History of Japanese Game Developers" DVD is pretty cool but could have been much better if the interviewer wasn't such a dork.https://archive.org/details/the.-untold.-history.of.-japanese.-game.-developers.-2014.-dvd.x-264
>>12768798The interviews are surprisingly honest for something dealing with Nintendo, like how several old Retro Studios devs, not in the same interview, had the same feeling that they were given Metroid Prime precisely because the original author was dead, the series was considered dead, so it didn't matter to Nintendo if they fucked it up. This isn't something most people these days would think about in retrospect, nobody nowadays even realizes that the Metroid series was considered dead at some point.
>>12768845>>12768796also I like the part where it's like >how DARE this lowly American employee explain something to Miyamoto-San in a meeting like he doesn't understand!!" spoilers he didn't understandAgain you wouldn't get a story like this in your typical Nintendo-marketing-approved interview/documentaryThat part was about Retro Studios wanting to make a car combat game like Twisted Metal, a genre popular in the US for at least 5-6 years at that point. Nintendo bought an American studio and Miyamoto didn't seem to be aware this was a thing, I think it's very telling of the misunderstanding / culture clash between the two.anyway I'm not going to give a word of mouth retelling of the entire video, just watch it it's cool
>>12768834I can imagine, the books were cringe enough
>>127688344 mins in and so far it's nothing but a terribly filmed travel log and the guy describing how retarded he is like it's the first time he's even let out of his appartmentI can't take 4 hours of this, what are the good parts?
>>12768916the good parts are when he (finally!) lets the jap gamedevs talk and show old docs & gearhere's a playlist with some clips:https://youtu.be/Ma6ZFpj8SLA?list=PLKAlBDOVnpivBW8UokMEVJx9fdOZkrpOG
>>12766789I like the half-interview, half-Let's Play Tim Schafer would do with devs on old games they worked on. A good starter is the Lion King by Westwood.
>>12768845>nobody nowadays even realizes that the Metroid series was considered dead at some pointInternally, it never was. Nintendo tried to make an N64 title but they struggled to come up with anything that met their quality standards.
>>12769020I'm pretty sure that was before Gunpei Yokoi's death though, and 3-4 years with nothing to show for the series (not even internally) was a long time back then
>>12769465They had one game on NES, one on Game Boy, and one on SNES. They tried to make one on N64 and it didn't work out. That's not really a long time for this series and Yokoi's death in irrelevant because he wasn't even at the company anymore by that time.

>>12766789Halo 2 Making of Documentary (2004)Source: Halo 2 Limited Collector's Editionhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWael1c2nt8
This documentary is really good, I got the 2 disc DVD copy and it fucking owns. So many special features like full ass interviews and pinball expo speech and Pinball 2000 instructional videos.

>>12766789preservingworlds.net/I posted this before rather recently, so I am prepared to be called a shill and insulted/ridiculed (that's the /vr/ way after all). There are exactly 6 games on this website and 6 videos and I loved every minute of them because the people in these interviews are very passionate about the projects they are keeping alive. They are autistic as fuck and it gives me summoning salt vibes and I love it. Watch them all I will know if you don't and if you don't your mother will die in her sleep tonight.
>>12770428Am I the only that can't stand Ars Technica? The vast majority of interviews come off like the interviewees are full of themselves and pretending that they were all groundbreaking boundary pushing devs even when talking about trivial things. I can understand egotistical artists (and it's part of why interviews should never be taken at face value), but at that point it must also be the fault of the interviewer.
>>12770428>Half-Life 25th anniversaryThis was cool until the Xen part. They don't have a single interesting thing to say about it and instead bash it and try to find excuses. It feels to me like they're just saying what they think the fans want to hearAnother thing that strikes me is that they don't talk about their video game influences besides Quake (they have no choice for to talk about that one), when Half-Life is also very obviously inspired by Duke Nukem 3DStill a cool doc, the part with the leaked demo inspiring them and giving them confidence is interesting considering the contrary of that happened with the HL2 leak.
>>12770936Well, they are hardcore lefties, so no surprises in there. Dropped them soon as they did this shitty video durin covid.
>>12771213Or maybe they also think Xen was bad and they genuinely just ran out of ideas by that point and/or bit off more than they could chew with the jumping physics.
I'm watching this one tomorrow. Some bongs say it's the best docu on computer games it better be
>>12768860>>how DARE this lowly American employee explain something to Miyamoto-San in a meeting like he doesn't understand!!" Japan is just too obsessed with status. Do they still think this is the feudal era? Why can't they just be normal.
GET LAMP: The Text Adventure DocumentaryI contributed to a Kickstarter for that I think? And then eventually I got a copy of it and watched it, and I liked it, but I don't remember much about it. There was also a documentary by that guy, about BBSes I think, that I liked more.
>>12771228What a bunch of bastards, daring to promote sc***ce
>>12772436I still think there is a lot of bullshit in there. The entire video they're like "the game wasn't built linearly" and then when it gets to Xen suddenly it's "well it's the end of the game so it was also the end of production!"I don't know how it's possible to not have a single interesting thing to say about Xen outside of "it was challenging because the editor isn't made for organic shapes", they really just think the audiance doesn't want to hear it and instead it's just bashing and excuses and half-apologies. Which is sad because this kind of doc should precisely be the opportunity to open people's minds on what they were trying to do instead of being like "the majority is alright right so let's pat them in the back and tell them that their mis-understanding and narrow taste is a good thing; and that they're right to want to stick to their comfort zone even though the entire point of Xen was to do something outside of that comfort zone".
>>12766789GOG had a few. but they stopped selling them because no one bought them i guess?
