There will be a market for new CD and DVD drives, there are many designs that are bulletproof and out of patent now. There is already a startup making a clone of the last good all-metal Philips CDM drive (4 IIRC). It's $1500 for the bare mechanism and driver board. You bring your own everything else.

IIRC there was a project a while back to provide a whole new all metal sled and gearset but it required remounting the laser which was a precision process so few people did it.

I've had music CDs and game CDs that were stored in their cases in normal temperatures in my house. Not humid and not exposed to the elements. Literally sitting in a box. 20 years later those CDs turned yellow and the silver backing is flaking off. It's rotting. Disc rot seems to be entirely random and depending on the chemicals used by the CD manufacturer. There's no way to know.
