how were you supposed to beat this?
i refuse to believe a human did this on original hardware
>>
It was made for the people who obsessively mastered the first game.
>>
It has a save system.
The game is not impossible, but it is very hard and trolley
>>
there's a reason it wasn't released abroad
>everyone who played it hated it

Mostly it just takes memorizing the levels. Where to jump, how long to hold the button in the air, etc. The final castle levels are really tough at first, but once you memorize exactly how you got through you'll do it consistently.

People playing it on original hardware back then didn't have millions of games in a backlog, so they often replayed the games they did have a ton.

I completed this as a child on super Mario all stars i spent a whole afternoon doing it. Now as an adult I can’t and I think to myself how on earth did I do it

Without warps

I'm pretty sure the counter overflows past 255
>>
>>12768819
The lives counter is a signed integer so at 128 lives it starts counting in the negatives and if you now die you just game over because your life number is negative. Boys and girls watching at home do not collect more than 128 lives at the turtle.

Watch the Game Center CX episode on it, then go back in time to be a school student in 1980s Japan during the Famicom boom

Same lol
>>
I beat that shit when I was like 6 on all-stars.
No internet, no phones, we had a lot of time to try and try again. Haven't played it in 30 years, it'd probably kick my ass today.
>>
>>12768643
It's troll design but doable if you've played the first game enough. It only took me a day or two to finish blind, compared to the months it took me to finish SMB1 when I was a kid.
>>
>>12768643
>on original hardware
as opposed to having input lag?
>>
>>12768652
That's actually not why. NoA had a young guy who worked in their warehouse and they let him play games to help decide if they should be released in America or not. He unironically got filtered by Mario 2 so I said they shouldn't release it.

You think that's hard? Try doing it the way I did growing up: with screen crunch and LCD ghosting.

>“As I continued to play, I found that Super Mario Bros. 2 asked me again and again to take a leap of faith and that each of those leaps resulted in my immediate death. This was not a fun game to play. It was punishment. Undeserved punishment. I put down my controller astonished that Mr. Miyamoto has chosen to design such a painful game.”
>—Howard Phillips[1]
>Howard Phillips is an American video game consultant and producer. He was a prominent figure of Nintendo of America from its founding up until the launch of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, first acting as a warehouse manager, then taking on multiple roles during the leadup to the North American launch of the Nintendo Entertainment System, including game testing, retailer relations, and co-editor of Nintendo Power. As part of his duties, he playtested Family Computer titles to judge which games warranted exporting to the Western market.

>Phillips would have a notable impact on the Super Mario franchise when he was assigned to test the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 and, in contrast to his complete approval of the original Super Mario Bros., hated it, feeling the game relied too much on counterintuitive tricks and was simply too punishing to be fun.[2]:VIII On his recommendation, Nintendo of America president Minoru Arakawa would pass on releasing the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2, and instead commissioned the Japanese headquarters to retool the unrelated platform game Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic into a Super Mario Bros. sequel to continue the momentum of the successful Super Mario franchise.[2]:41 The reskinned Doki Doki Panic would get Phillips' immediate approval in testing and get released as Super Mario Bros. 2.

>Phillips was also featured as himself in Nintendo Power's Howard and Nester comic. When the real Phillips left Nintendo in 1991, the character would likewise leave the comic, passing his trademark red bowtie to Nester.

Dude got filtered hard
>>
>>12770870
This is actually my favorite version of SMB. The screen crunch is unfortunate and I wish there was a way around that, but the rest of the package is so charming that it makes the sacrifice worth it. I wish someone would make a backported version of this to the Famicom, but even then it would lose out on some features like the printer stuff so there's no perfect solution.
>>
Just play as Luigi the character is designed to be easier to jump
>>
>>12768643
It wasn't made by a human, it was made by the Japanese for the Japanese market.
Also, FILTERED as the most unholy fuck in the existence.
>>
>>12770920
So would've been millions of muttistan kids, at best putting a huge stain on Nintendo's reputation. But, knowing nu-/vr/, that's what you would've wanted.
>>
>>12770949
>it was made by the Japanese for the Japanese market
You just described every Nintendo game. Every Japanese game, actually.
>>
>>12770952
>So would've been millions of muttistan kids
They got filter by the first game too
>that's what you would've wanted
I played it on All Stars as a kid and I didn't have any problem with it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
>>
>All Stars
You didn't beat the game
>>
>>12770975
That was the only way for a kid to play it in America at the time. I didn't switch over to Japanese copies of games until after I moved to Japan.
>>
>>12768643
Other than the castle puzzles which were just trial and error, there isn't anything overwhelming in this game.

They released it on famicon disk for a reason

Nobody I knew growing up liked the Lost Levels but also this was on a cart that had SMB3 on it so it had stiff competition.

Many such cases.
>>
>>12768643
really? I never thought it was that hard. Like, it is annoyingly hard, for sure, but I never felt it was impossible. I usually ask "how was anyone supposed to beat this?" about stuff like Wizardry 4, where I'm pretty sure beating the game without a game is literally, factually impossible.
Anyway to answer your question: just don't go into any pipes ever. That way you will never be transported back to an earlier level. Now it just becomes a harder SMB1, but still manageable, and the worst stage is the one with the springs and the wind. Good luck!
>>
>>12771781
*beating the game without a guide, sorry
>>
>>12768767
He was clearly saying that HE never played it. It's the same retard that shits up every single thread here. The only game he plays is triggering autists.
>>
>>12768643
free time
there were more insane nes games out there

>>12768650
the save system is so trollish, it only saves how many times you've beaten the game
