Im not quite having as much fun as soul blazer but im going to force myself to beat it just so I can go to Terranigma and say I beat the quintet trilogy

The little princess is annoying as fuck. The writing is bad. Theres way too much story padding between dungeons. The music is kinda generic and boring compared to SoulBlazer. Some of the puzzles are obtuse and obnoxious instead of being fun to solve.
>>
>>12769687
>The music is kinda generic and boring
Fuck you
>>
>>12769687
it has 2 nice music pieces;
also the game has no puzzles?
are you dumb?
>>
>>12769687
What a coincidence i'm actually in a Quintet discovery and Terranigma is the one i am the most excited about playing

I played them in order and i'm actually at actraiser 2 (the game is fucking hard) next will be Illusion of gaia

Do illusion of Gaia look more like Zelda 3 or Secret of mana ?
Not a fan of secret of mana i would prefer a Zelda 3 clone
>>
>>12769836
Not "puzzles" but just their ideas on how you progress dungeons is really boring. In SoulBlazer it was just rescuing villagers and talking to them for hints and progression items and it was cute and comfy. Illusion of Gaia is a lot more uninspired and feels like a super generic japanese A-RPG with zero original ideas. Also I dont like the mechanic of clearing all enemies for upgrades, I preferred traditional XP system of Soulblazer and clearing all enemies revealed new parts of the town.
>>
>>12769846
New Terranigma announcement on Monday boys, fucking hyped they managed to get the rights as I thought they were lost forever
>>
>>12769846
Its absolutely nothing like Zelda 3. It feels like you are accomplishing nothing in Gaia and you and your friends just randomly trot around a map you dont get to explore. Its just a generic linear dungeon crawler with badly written/translated dialogue between dungeons. Its not even really an RPG or a proper adventure game. It feels more like Ys, good art design, decent music, absolutely zero RPG elements, zero exploration, and the bosses are the only memorable thing about it.
>>
>>12769846
I don't know much about Secret of Mana but I know both A Link to the Past and Illusion of Gaia very well
Illusion of Gaia doesn't have the arsenal that Zelda games typically have, but instead has a small handful of special moves. You also have limited access to two transformations, one of which you get very early in the game.
There isn't much of an overworld in the same sense as Zelda's, what there is mostly serves as story setting and transitions between dungeons. There's no overworld enemies, no real shops or minigames. The closest thing to a currency is more akin to Mario coins, adding up to extra lives, and only earned in dungeons.
There's no experience/leveling system, no equipment. Instead, you earn stat increases by completely clearing dungeon rooms. The dungeon rooms are generally larger and fewer than Zelda 3's, for reference.
Dungeon puzzles are simpler and more subdued than most Zelda puzzles, kill this particular enemy, weigh down this pressure plate, figure out how to reach this area, play a particular song in this room. Late-game dungeons are pretty labyrinthine.

Not sure how else to compare it to A Link to the Past
>>
>>12769876
Its not a kusoge at all but gameplay-wise its like a 7/10 snes game with really cool aesthetics and soulfulness. You are much better off playing Terranigma or Secret of Mana. Soul Blazer is also not really worth playing unless you want something extremely simple and easy that you can just turn your brain off and get cozy with.
>>
>>12769893
Maturity is realizing that the game you grew up with was just okay, it had nice music and cool bosses and overall a nice theme but it didn't really do anything special
>>
>>12769893
Soul Blazer was like an arcade game with some story beats. Illusion of Gaia goes more for telling a story and keeping the gameplay relatively simple. I also felt like Terranigma was able to combine both.
>>
>>12769909
I have a totally different life experience because I didnt grow up with "good" games or classics for the most part. I grew up with garbage bin sports shit and other trash. Also i was born in 94 so I only remember the ps1/n64 era as my earliest. so ive been going through SNES games blind basically and judging them based on my tastes as an adult.
>>
>>12769858
What a pity. Another classic is going to get raped by modern publishers.
A shame. A damn shame.
>>
>>12769856
valid point, but the game is not that hard, you can just play it casually with minimum effort, it has an ok story

I completely agree. Soul Blazer is the best in the series, even above Terranigma. I can seem why people prefer the later over the former, but IoG is vastly inferior to both.
>>
>>12769687
>The little princess is annoying as fuck. The writing is bad. Theres way too much story padding between dungeons.
I mean you willingly played the version for cattle dont be surprised it sucks.
>>

>>12769915
Whatever Soul Blazer is, it had a big impression on me and quickly became a favorite. It really succeeded in the storybook vibe and world. A little more depth to the gameplay would be nice, but for me it's apparently a tradeoff. Zelda has the exploration and items/upgrades nailed, but I never care about the story beats or characters. Soul Blazer was simple adventure gameplay, but I was totally drawn into the little world it presented
>>
I'll also say Terranigma nearly succeeds at doing it all, but the magic system is convoluted and some moments are obtuse/broken making it firmly a "guide game". Inb4 people say they beat Bloody Mary first try without help, good for you, you're the super special one percent gaming savant I guess.

>>12770576
Cattle, do you mind being called a bug? Cry

What I really like about soul blazer was the insane amount of environments
pretty much everything from the bottom of the sea to high tech laboratories. And some weird stuff like inside paintings and miniature towns

*Terranigma just repeats everything that happens in Soul Blazer/Gaia.

You're going to be really disappointed when you play terranigma because story/thematically you've seen it all before. Plus the gameplay/dungeon design/music/combat etc aren't as good.
>>
>>12774428
lolwut
the only bad dungeon is the lion king bullshit, literally everything else is peak, and the combat is way much better than the other two games. it's the culmination of everything quintet had done, both in this series and the actraiser series.
>>
>>12769858
If they did that means they finally tracked down Tomoyoshi or he came out of hiding as not being able to locate him is the reason we have never gotten a re-release. The rumor has always been he willingly disappeared/skipped town in 2009 when the online Pachinko site and it's payment processing service which he ran folded without returning customers funds.

I hope he did come back. If so that means all the Quintet stuff could start to be rereleased and re-made.
>>
>>12774776
No, I seriously doubt that Tomoyoshi Miyazaki came out of hiding or resurfaced. The character designer for the game Kamui Fujiwara has been rallying for a resurrection of the game for a few years now, even doing an art exhibition in Tokyo that was meant to be sort of an open call to Miyazaki that there was interest and to come back and allow it to happen. However, there are new orphan works/unmanaged licensing frameworks laws in Japan now that would make this possible without him. If I had to guess that's the most likely scenario. The copyright at the bottom of the teaser video says SQUARE ENIX / QUINTET / Kamui Fujiwara. While the Quintet part could possibly suggest Miyazaki is involved, Fujiwara being named explicitly kind of seems to suggest he's the main connecting link between the original team and this game.

Anything is possible though. Either way, with above mentioned laws in effect there now, it's almost assured that this is going to be a re-make or re-release or possibly even sequel announcement so get fuckin hype.
>>
>>12774428
Terranigma is sadder in my opinion. I'm not a feels fag but it got me, I feel like it's story was well executed but the gameplay itself needed work

All of Miyazaki's games, especially the Quintet Trilogy, have that melancholic style. It's really unique and even haunting in a way. That said I think Terranigma hit me in the feels in this way less than Soul Blazer and Gaia did.

Also fuck OP. And the opening town theme in Gaia is fucking LEGENDARY.
>>
>>12774425
ill have to play it and see then
>>12774825
>opening town theme in Gaia is fucking LEGENDARY.
Not to me. I found the soundtrack really fucking boring and just a worse version of what Square Jrpgs were doing. Meanwhile soul blazer has a really unique soundtrack that constantly switches genres and BOPS way more as you progress through the dungeons. And Soul Blazers Mozart-esque town theme is much much more memorable in my opinion especially when it changes after you rescued everybody, it feels like you're an actual hero god sent to make people happy.

To me Soul Blazer in general has so much more...Soul. No pun intended. But then again, I dont automatically think every Japanese game I play is an instant classic. Gaia is almost too generic of a SNES jrpg, its going through the motions without feeling unique. like what AI shits out from amalgamating every Japanese developed adventure game ever made into one thing.
>>
>>12774953
Soul Blazer certainly does have a lot of as you said, soul. It's a haunting and really beautiful game to be honest. I find the same kind of beauty in Gaia. It was my first game of the trilogy and what I played as a kid so there may be some bias there too. Keep with it, some of the things that happen may change your opinion on it but it just may not connect with you as much. Terranigma I am certain you will love. Wait till you see and hear the first town there.

I disagree with you on Gaia but I appreciate you expressing your opinion at length. Just keep pushing on through Gaia, like I said the best is yet to come with Terranigma.
>>
>>12774953
Dude you just have bad taste. It's common around here.
>>
>>12775082
Haunting? There has been absolutely zero "haunting" moments in either games so far. Maybe like one or two sad moments? I guess it must be "dark" for a JRPG, which are usually made with kids in mind. Shit, Zelda games have creepier locations and enemies sometimes
>>
>>12776180
You'll get there. If you finish it and still feel that way you're a cynical nigger and should get a soul.
>>
>>12776180
Also meant haunting as something that stays with you and effects you not necessarily something creepy or BOO! scary ghost haunting.
>>
>>12774787
>The copyright at the bottom of the teaser video says SQUARE ENIX / QUINTET / Kamui Fujiwara. While the Quintet part could possibly suggest Miyazaki is involved, Fujiwara being named explicitly kind of seems to suggest he's the main connecting link between the original team and this game.
That's always been the copyright for Terranigma, though (only with Enix instead of Square Enix back in the day), so this really doesn't prove anything.
It's kind of like a Quintet tradition to list third-party artists in the copyright. Check out Illusion of Gaia's title screen: it's (C) Quintet/Enix/Mariko Ohara/Moto Hagio/Yasuhiro Kawasaki, aka developer/publisher/character designer/storywriter/composer.

>even doing an art exhibition in Tokyo
He's done two or three at this point. I have merch from the last one and it's all also copyrighted Quintet/Square Enix/Kamui Fujiwara, for whatever that's worth.

Actraiser Renaissance also had Quintet listed on its title screen, by the way. But with Actraiser, because it was rereleased for mobile phones/Wii before Miyazaki disappeared, it seems Square Enix had a deal with Quintet all along that allowed them to remake it. I'm guessing because enough time passed, Square Enix can use the license again. We'll see what it is soon enough, but without Quintet's actual input, I gotta be honest, I'm not "fuckin hype." Actraiser Renaissance was passable at best, it'd be lame to get a watered down Terranigma from random devs.
>>
>>12775348
>BOPS
He's a redditor.
>>
>>12776248
Yeah the rights for ActRaiser was some kind of unique deal that doesn't apply to the rest. Man I sure hope the guy is back but I bet it's the new abandoned IP laws.

If it's just a remaster ala the SaGa 3 one that would still be cool and get eyes on the game and maybe lead to more. Who knows?
>>
>>12776267
>If it's just a remaster ala the SaGa 3 one that would still be cool and get eyes on the game and maybe lead to more. Who knows?
According to Yuzo Koshiro that's what they wanted with Renaissance but it didn't sell well. Terranigma is beloved by its fanbase, but it's a very niche fanbase. If a better known game like Actraiser couldn't pull of enough numbers, I'm doubtful a Terranigma remaster/remake will be more than a modest success. Either way, it is alright, as Terranigma does not need a sequel (and neither did Actraiser, though I do like Actraiser 2.)

>>
>>12776290
What do you think the announcement is gonna be? Just some art book or some shit?
>>
>>12776316
Since the announcement was made by Clear River Games, I'm thinking it'll just be the SNES ROM with maybe a new translation and a new animated intro, like they did with Clock Tower: Rewind or Assault Suits Valken: Declassified (also SNES games). I'm guessing the bit they used for announcement was from this new intro.
It is definitely not an artbook, Kamui Fujiwara has already released two and they didn't get announcements like this one. It MAY be a remaster or a remake, but I find that doubtful given the kind of work Clear River Games tends to make.
>>
>>12769836
The game has lots of those physical puzzles like the top-down 2D Zelda games where you have to do a sequence correctly or reset the room.
>>12771919
Terranigma's magic system is just magic rings you buy that temporarily use up your magic rocks while you have them. It's very simple. The problem is how useless most of them are. Also I did beat Bloody Mary without help, by grinding a few more levels so that I did more damage.
>>
>>12776337

I still never figured out the last scene. So was elderly Will narrating the game's whole story to the kids and teacher who looked exactly like all his old friends? And what's with the traffic accidents?
>>
>>12777362
At the beginning of the game Will is in school in South Cape, and the teacher dismisses the kids with a warning about monsters and demons outside of town. It's a play on that. It's showing that the threats have changed in the modern era but of course danger does (and will always) exist. And no it's not Will narrating the game. The comet mutates and recreates the world every time it passes. The kids shown in the modern era at the end are the result of that. They don't remember each other or their journey but are still drawn together inexplicably in this recreated modern world.

Lilly wasn't part of the original core group from the beginning. She wouldn't be here at the school because she wasn't at the school in the beginning. It's not saying she got hit by a car. She's reincarnated somewhere else in the modern world. It's a call back to the teacher warning the group about monsters at the opening of the game.
