Zombies are not scary, resident evil is not scary, zombies and giant animals would only be scary to children and they are incredibly boring, the reason they existand are like that? A virus wow, the final boss? A big zombie wow, it's not really a surprise the series went to become an action game. Now Silent Hill's monsters are actually scary but also interesting, they are supernatural beings and all have deep symbolism and backstories behind them and their designs. It's shame so many horror game are just copying resident evil and go the boring zombie, big zombie and virus outbreak road, even a human serial killer is more scary than that.
>>12770076>OMG YOU CAN SEE HIS BRAINt. me at 8
>>12770076Why'd you write all this bullshit up when the simple truth is things that are scary at first, become not scary after you get over it?Redeads rightfully scared my ass and now I can chop them into suey using a kokiri sword. So what?
>>12770076No game is scary if you can carry enough firepower and ammo to take over a small country.
>>12770076silent hill isn't necessarily scary either only scary games are games that have whatever phobia the player has and that's the hard cold truth
>>12770076I don't care about horror stuff too much, but an Anon here described the SH monsters as 'things that go bump in the night' and that sums it up pretty well, I thinkthe problem with zombies and really any concept that's been heavily explored is that it's predictable. everyone knows a zombie is going to shamble towards you and try to eat you and how a vampire is going to behave, that predictability makes it less frightening in my opinion that's why humans are the most frightening thing of all (Michael Myers or whatever else) since they're generally unpredictable and unknown, plus there's no real limit to the depravity and evil of a human mind
>>12770076Zombies weren't anywhere near as overplayed in the 90s as they later became.
>>12770175
>Now Silent Hill's monsters are actually scary>posts the burping nurse stand-in from SH4, flat out one of the goofiest monsters in any piece of horror media
>>12770179
>>12770076Wageslaving for 50 years is scary

>AAAA ITS AN UGLY NURSE, SAVE ME PYRAMIDMAN
>>12770175Your oppion seems contradictory. Unless the "human" you are dealing with is some kind of supernatural bullshit of infected by something like The Thing, it's still going to have the same type of motor functions a human would have when trying to attack you.
>>12770178They were still pretty fucking overplayed by that point too. I think the only time period where people actually considered zombies scary was the 70s, with the Romero films.Even in Resident Evil they're the filler enemies that are barely a threat. And then we reached the 2000s where zombies are basically a backdrop for 'le humans are the real monsters'
I was 11 when re1 came out. I used to make my mom sit with me while I played because I was chicken shit
>>12771482I dunno about that. Zombie movies were relegated to C-tier indie movies by the time the first Resident Evil landed, which was probably the starting point of the revival. It wasn't even much better in the 80s but they were more B than C at least. The last "mainstream" zombie thing before then was the Night of the Living Dead remake in 1990 or so, but even that wasn't a bigdeal or anything. It was always a relatively niche and indie genre up until the late 90s and 2000s when Millennial normies turned it into a fucking joke just like everything else they ever touched.
>>12770076Silent Hill is literally imaginary enemies, the epitome of "not scary". There's a reason it's mostly liked by women.
>>12771509As opposed to the very real threat of zombies?
I don't think I've ever gotten scared by a single game. The most is like wow you surprised me with a jump scare. At least with Resident Evil you can kind of play it like an action game.
>>12771523Your low-T fear of sexy nurses stops mattering when there's a real creature in your house trying to rip your throat off, I guarantee you.
>>12771505Yeah zombies were small time for a long time until Resident Evil brought them back to the forefront. Besides the Night remake, I remember Return of the Living Dead 3 playing on cable semi-regularly for a while. If you were really into horror, there was stuff like Dead Alive that you and maybe a dozen other people watched. They'd pop up from time to time like in that Simpsons Treehouse of Horror segment or Zombies Ate My Neighbors where they were treated more as a silly joke. But that was about it.
>>12770076>deep symbolism and backstories behind them and their designs
>>12772220That's still a lot more thought out than zombie, dog, Piranha plant, alligator man, and giganigga
>>12770092So what you're saying is that zombies are for babies and they're basically a monster for f****** retarded welfare morons who belong in Mass Graves?
>>12770076silent hill is baby shit and only uncultured swine think it's deep.
>>12772424And they think it's deep because anything is deep to retards.
>>12772419No you retarded prick
>>12772402Not sure there was much though put into SH it's just a string of incoherent ideas and imagery ripped off from western horror.
>>12772424It's not deep in a high level literary sense obviously but I think in terms of more gut level style it's pretty compelling, most stuff in the genre is rarely as effective in that sense.
>>12772434It's about as compelling as "Zanzibart... Forgive Me" in souls games. japs can't write and SH has nothing to say.
Silent Hill 1's bestiary is indistinguishable from any random Resident Evil game. It's a mix of zombies, mutants, and giant animals. The only difference is that you shoot the devil at the end instead of some big gray guy or a flesh monster.
In my opinion the only real scary videogame enemies tend to be stalking predators, something actively tracking you. silent hill's roster could certainly be argued as creepier than resident evils but aggro from shambling creatures is pretty mild as far as scares go, once you're finished with your mad dash and the enemies are out of sight you're safe.
>>12770076Zombies were scary back in the day, the problem is they're so overdone now that you have to make them unique for each new media to keep them scary, see the shibito in Siren as a prime example. Also Silent Hill tends to be hit or miss with the designs, for every monster that is uniquely bizarre and frightening, there is another that is either lazily recycled from other games i.e dogs, or just plain goofy shit i.e burping patients and fat bastards, very few of which actually have any deep meaning behind them.>>12772424Ok Mr. Potato Head.
>>12770076SH is imagery is heckin cool for 14 yr olds and belongs on hot topic t shirts and Marylin Manson videos.RE is B horror camp and knows it. I can respect that.
>>12772462I disagree with your take, most people aren't into silent hill because of extreme angst or edginess.
>>12772432The abstract Daddy has more thought and theming put into it than any enemy in the PS1 trilogy.
>>12772485>muh sexual abuseHaha so edgy and mature amrite?
>>12772447Is that Insane Cancer? Theres a SH3 enemy called Insane Cancer
>>12770076video games aren't scary because they're fictional stories. therefore how "scary" a horror game is is completely unrelated to the quality of the game, because if they were all horror games would be shit.
>>12772485immature slop for teens
>>12772465I think they are actually. It's embarrassing listening to SH fans talk.
>>12772667yes
>>12772485omg rape and abuse from DADDY. LOOK THE MONSTER REPRESENTS HER ABUSE!! LOOK AT ME MOMMY I'M A MATURE BOY NOW CONSUMING MATURE MEDIA!!!
>>12770076Honestly though I actually preferred Silent Hill when it was about an evil cult with childhood fairytale monsters rather than being a therapy session.
>>12772856Sorry anon but the funny fedora man on youtube said the therapy session game is superior
>>12772856>>12772861Supernatural Serial Killer is better than both of those
>>12772662>>12772801>>12772808Seething, Guess there's a lot of RE fanboys on this board. Either way, that 'immature slop' has more thought put behind it than B movie schlock.
>>12772882
>>12772856The monsters in 1 and 3 are still based around the psyche of Alessa/Heather.
>>12772402>That's still a lot more thought outSo? To what benefit? It's a shitty walking rectangle. The player is given no insight into what this is, and even if they were given background info, so what? It doesn't elevate anything.
>>12772986?It's pretty obvious if you think about it. The game is upfront about the fact she was sexually abused, she literally calls the monster daddy, and she beats the shit out of it in a blind rage. And the design is a very 'abstract' figure framed and covered in cloth. I would say understanding that it's meant to be a bed and represent him violating her under the covers is the only real thing you would have to look up.
>>12773005It looks like a walking door with a slimy turd on it in the game, I just nuked the stupid thing and moved on. Later on it's a generic enemy, which makes all these le deep design backstories pretty stupid.
>>12772986Didn't play the game alert
>>12773094Then go play it
>>12771509>Silent Hill is literally imaginary enemieThey are real, they are physical manifestations>the epitome of "not scary".
